The ballistics of the shotshells are all over the place depending on brand and configuration. Almost none of them perform well, but 1 is incredibly good and changed my opinion on the firearm completely. Out of my research and testing, federal handgun 000 is by FAR the most impressive. Every trigger pull is essential a firing squad of hot 32acp(18 inches in gel). Four independent wound channels, 4 inch spread at 10 yards. Perfect for home defense. Every other shotshell I tested sucked in gel or the spread was too wide. Basically federals buckshot makes a really strong argument against the 5 shot capacity considering you get 20 buckshot in a cylinder and each is deadly and exceeds fbi standards.

That is some super good information! I am definitely going to keep an eye out for them. I love testing new ammo and that one definitely sounds like it would be good!

@@patriotpastime8142 I would tell you don't use slugs unless you have to, they're ok. But you'd be better off with a hot 9mm. The buckshot he's talking about is what makes the judge unique. No other handgun can deliver that many terminally effective wounds per shot. The spread has something to do with that specific shotshell engaging the rifling so it doesn't spread as much. With that long barrel, you'll probably get more velocity too. But good luck finding it!

The federal 000 buck is the gold standard shotshell for this firearm. It’s probably the best HD round as well. Consider 45 Colt in a speed loader as backup but you probably won’t need it

If you need a slug just stick 45 Colt in it. I look at it as a 45 with the ability to shoot some 410 rounds for pests or really close small game.

While this is possible, it's not recommended by taurus since .45acp produces 50% more chamber pressure than 45 colt. 45 colt produces 14k and. 45 acp produces 21k. While alot of people have reported that they had no issues. Same with the +p colt rounds , over time with repeated firings who knows how well your cylinder will hold up to the increased pressures. I am by no means a expert but I wouldn't go suggesting things like this when it isn't recommended by the manufacturer. While I do believe the frame and barrel could easily handle the stress, the cylinder walls are quite thin.

@@patriotpastime8142 with my fat arthritic knuckles my 2nd knuckle on my middle finger would rub on the back of the trigger guard with the original grip. The ATI Scorpion grip actually pulls my hand back just enough to clear it. Best 40 bucks ever spent!

410 buckshot at 3-5 yards yards is strong enough to stop anyone in their tracks as long as their not wearing armor.

jauchiu is 100% wrong. everyone seems to think they know more than Elmer Keith and Jim Jordan. The long moniker came about to distinguish it from the 45 Short Colt (AKA 45 Colt Government) which is a short version of the Colt case complete with Colt rim and head stamp. 45 S&W has a different rim diameter.

Recently got a Taurus 856 Defender three inch and because of the small J frame it makes the revolver small enough for concealed carry. Matte black stainless steel with Hogue grips. I have an Andicen leather IWB/OWB thumb break/snap holster with a belt loop on one side and a clip on the other it can be worn in or out of the pants. I use Bianchi speed strips for reloads because they are flat and fit in a pocket unlike bulky speed loaders. Still a new revolver so I need to get it to the range and get some rounds through it but I am waiting on my brass to get in that is back ordered so I can load some rounds. If I can get some factory ammo at a decent price in the mean time I might do that. Currently I have some Remington HTP defense loads for it.

I have the .45/410 Judge reolver in nickle plate (I think it's nickle plated) anyway it accumulates a lot of gun powder after firing. So removing the cylinder will help me as I clean the pistol. Nice info. I think I'll order several of those revolver speedloaders since they're not too expensive. Enjoyed a full-watch. 👍🏽🤠

Back when you didn't have to refinance your house to buy 45LC ammo, one of my favorite things to do was practice with speed loaders! They're a ton of fun and loads more productive when proficient!

@@patriotpastime8142 cheapest 45 colt ammo I have found is ammo inc actually being under 1$ a round. Midway let's you back order it and even they have stock of it I've seen it go on sale a few times to about .75 cents a round.

Just So You Know: That "notch" you referred to is typically called the "Cylinder Stop" (a "notch is actually a form of slot, not a tab). The "slot" is usually called the "cylinder stop notch" (see?). I only mention it because detail-oriented mistakes like that make you sound like a noob that doesn't know what he's talking about. Also, I wouldn't worry too much about being accuse of manufacturing a gun because you removed the cylinder and put the same one back in. Anyone moronic enough to make that accusation either A: needs a nurse to change their Depends or B: Has an antigun agenda and your announcement is meaningless to them. Also, the cylinder is mounted on the "crane". And the button on the driver's side (?) that you press to open the cylinder is usually called the "cylinder latch" or "release" or somesuch. I know it's nitpicky, but details are important when people are deciding that you know enough to be listened to. Finally, thanks for including the links to the speedloader and grip sites. I'm thinking of getting a Judge, and I'd need that info if I do.
