Thank you for this very informative video! I am a Cath Lab Nurse in the Prep and Recovery unit, and we are starting this week to recover post TAVR patients this week instead of them going to PACU. I really appreciate all of the information that you outlined.

I have severe air tic stenosis, I am awaiting a TAVR. Apart from breathless I am not really suffering any of the other main things at the moment. However I feel all the time like I have flu symptons, could this be part of the problems along with feeling very tired. I so worry that I do not have anything else going on. Guess I just worry about the whole procedure. I am an ex nurse so over think everything as we all do. Thank you for helping me with this in advance. I do have arthritis as well.

HI Karen, I'm sorry to hear you have severe AR, I have a retired nurse friend of mine who too had severe AR and had a TAVR about 3 years ago. If you would like me to try to connect you two, send and email to pacunursingminutes.com/contact/ and I will see if she is open to sharing her personal patient experience to help you as you begin your journey. SOB is a classic AR symptom, as for the flue like symptoms I would tell your PCP to make sure no other issues are present. TAVRs have an excellent success rate much higher than the Surgical approach, SAVR. For most patients the post-op bedrest is the hardest to follow. Best of Luck to you and Don't over think it! Have an excellent transcatheter surgeon in your court is highly desired!

@@pacunursingminutes thank you for your very kind words, I think it may just take be I feel very low and frustrated not being able to do the things in life I have always done, such small things tires me out. My leaflet opening is 0.9 so very restricted really. This has also given me oedema in my legs which is like taking to watering cans everywhere with me. So maybe where the flu like feelings come in , more just washed out. In general I am finding loosing weight getting harder which will not be helping. Thank you for the offer of your friend I don’t feel it’s right for me to bother her , but I am grateful for your kind offer to help me. I live in the Uk , and will be having my procedure in Papworth, which is the leading heart hospital here. I hope your friends continues to have good health , and hope I make it through my procedure also. Will be nice just to be able to breath normal again and be able to do things without always feeling so tired and breathless. Thank you for coming back to me. That was very kind of you.

Hi Nurse Kathy, My mother, 83, has already had open heart at 75, where to small of a valve was placed. This valve now needs to be replaced and she has been approved for the TAVR procedure. They have called and ask if one month from now will be good with every one, but I thought maybe we could work to build up her stamina with exercise and etc… Does this sound like a realistic thing we should try?

Hi Elaine, I would follow the physician recommendations if you have concerns it is always re-assuring to get a second opinion and also follow up with a meeting to have all your questions answered. So providers have email messaging via electronic medical records this can be helpful to get simple questions answered in a timely manner.

I didn’t think you could put a mechanical valve in a TAVR procedure???

What’s your opinion on post op TAVR patients having foley catheters placed at the end of the case? At my facility, TAVR patients might be straight cathed at the end of the case, or they don’t drain it at all. I’ve had a few TAVR patients that have increased bed rest times due to bleeding at the groin sights from needing to be log rolled onto a bed pan in order to void.

Hi Sean, I would review your hospitals policy on straight catheterization, if they come out of the OR not having been catheterized, a standard practice would be to bladder scan most policies indicate catheterizing as low as 350cc-500cc. Therefore review your hospital’s policy. Urinary retention post op can cause significant discomfort and complications such as you have experienced it is important to address this concern before it becomes a complication.

Thank you Tracey, glad to broaden your knowledge. I would love to learn about a topic of your interest, for review? Recommendations are welcome, the great part about working in PACU is the huge spectrum of patient populations that we serve!

@@pacunursingminutes I have only just started working in PACU, in a small private surgical hospital. Have been nursing 30 years in a variety of settings. My main interests are pain management, and I also need to learn more about paediatric recovery, especially tonsillectomy !!
