In a different life, if I was a lawyer, I would specialize into American Tax Law, because it's all sorts of fun. It's almost like a puzzle because of how many loopholes, exceptions, and gray areas there are. For example, I've heard municipal bonds often (but not always) offer tax free gains, that sort of thing. One particularly egregious example is how Apple used the Double Irish (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Irish_arrangement) to basically filter an intellectual property through several shell companies, in order to avoid €111 billion in taxes over 10 years. It's scummy, sure, but it was legal at the time, and it's how they managed to maintain profitable alpha as a bluechip
