Small correction: live birth is not exclusive to mammals, but the placenta is. There are many species of fishes and several reptiles that do this, though it's merely the eggs being held inside the animal; the young get no nourishment from their mother. I still agree with your placement of bulborbs as mammals. Blowhogs are quite a mystery, as the two clades seem morphologically incompatible. One would potentially have to forgo a skeleton to float, but a skeleton would be necessary to support one's body on land. I think there's a lot of room for speculative biology on Pikmin, and it's an exciting topic.

@Burgorton that's a really bad argument because its alternative name is "the Giant Ditch Frog". The entire reason it's named the mountain chicken is because locals report it tasting like chicken. Frogs also don't have tails. Tadpoles have tails, but the premature phosbats do not have tails. The phosbat also has two sets of teeth. Amphibians only have one set of teeth on the roof of their mouths.

One correction, regardless of if Crushblats are vertebrates or not, they are stated as having evolved from mollusks and are therefore not closely related to actual Chordates. Otherwise I love this video and have watched it a few times already. I'm still a bit iffy on the placement of the Grub-dogs and Phosbats given their "uniqueness" but I can't think of a better alternative to mammalia. edit: I've also come across the classification of the Empress Bulblax as being the same as the (Red) Bulborb. The species are technically different but Olimar has already stated that he's willing to give creatures of the same species a different species name if they're distinct enough (ex. Shaggy Long Legs and Baldy Long Legs). edit: Also also, if you were to relate the Phosbats to bats, the Blowhogs to pigs, and the Amprat to rats, then the Phosbats would be more closely related to Blowhogs, because Bats (for some reason) just aren't very closely related to rodents.

Glad someone else agrees that Breadbugs and Grub-Dogs are sister clades I actually think that, considering their eye stalks and lack of four limbs, the members of the Breadbug-Grub-Dog group are actually molluscs, evolved from land snails that internalized their shells to repurpose as a skeletal system, which eventually complexified into having limbs. I think Crushblats would be the sister clade of the Grubbugs/Bread-Dogs, though lacking stalked eyes and having extra digits. Some other notes: I don't think the Empress Bulblax gives true live birth, it just appears so (possibly the eggs hatching before coming out.) This kind of thing is present in some sharks and other animals. They also have larva soooo. Also, I think Empress, Emperor, Larva, and Red Bulborbs/Bulblaxes are intended to be the same organism and Nintendo just doesn't understand how species work. Anyways, super quality vid! I'd love to see more of this kind of thing, and I was hoping someone would pick up this idea.
@Manny4Life948

I think they complex eyes is just impossible for evolution of snails to replicate, octopus have eyes, but they’re nowhere as complex as a grub dogs, where they basically have the same anatomy as a mammal for there eyes, the crushblats just appeared to be more on land amphibians, as they’re shown around water and they resemble frogs. Lastly, it is never stated the emperor is an actual normal grub dog, it is only called “bulblax” because that’s just the monicker for a strong grub dog, the Empress is a strong, grub dog, and is so given the nickname “bulblax” so the emperor is its own species, and the Empress and larva are the same as the standard bulborb. One interesting thing to note is that every juvenile grub dog looks practically the same in the second and first moult. (Moults basically make it things way more complicated as snails don’t even moult and nor do mammals) so I’m willing to assume they’re their own family that branched off of mammals. As a reason for them having complex structures like eyes and hair. Just wanted to clear some stuff up.

I’m expecting Pikmin 3 deluxe to forget the old nomenclature and just make up new stuff that contradicts the old. Also Olimar himself wrote all his notes, which means he could’ve made mistakes. This list is wonderful, it’s actually something I once tried to do but gave up. I ultimately decided that because Olimar was not in his element combined with Nintendo just making things up as they go, that actually classifying game enemies would be impractical and nonsensical.

You should do a revisit of this video now that the piklopedia is available for pikmin 3 deluxe. It definitely changes a few things about this taxonomic tree... calcified crushblats are classified as mollusks. Also, I have a thought. It's possible that scornets are descended from birds. This is very obviously visible in the anatomy of the scornet maestro, with a beak, 4 limbs, and very vertebrate-like eyes. If you look closely, they also seem to have feathers. They also communicate with sounds, which is a very bird-like thing to do. I have the feeling that the four limbs and fuzzy bodies of the spectralids may also suggest that they are descended from a similar common ancestor. As to what birds, likely hummingbirds, as they are already small and insect-like. Also, it may be worth investigating the possibility that bulborbs are a kind of amphibian that developed mammalian features. Their generally smooth skin, wide mouths, and larval stage lends credence to this idea. This is also supported by the presence of aquatic members of this family, such as the water dumples. The hairy bulborb can be explained, as there are hairy frogs in real life. Filaments are easy to evolve in response to cold conditions. Live birth can also be explained as well, as this feature only seems to apply to land dwelling bulborb species. In Louie's notes for the bumbling snitchbug, it mentions that water dumples lay eggs. This taxonomic tree is a good start, I'd love to see where it goes.

Live-birth evolved in a lot of animal lineages like Scorpions, some insects, sharks and reptiles (the list is bigger). I like to think that Grub-dogs and their relatives evolved from some Mudskipper-like fish ancestor that become fully adapted to live on land and their two fins became the two legs of Grub-Dogs.

I agree that Bulborbs are probably mammals but live birth occurs sometimes in most animal phyla. Aphids give live birth parthenogenically, poecilids are a fish genus that get their common name from their live offspring, a majority of sharks give live birth, we have fossil evidence of extinct reptiles like ichthyosaurs giving live birth, etc. The only group of vertebrates I can think of that are *always* oviparous are birds.

In Pikmin 2 during one of the Empress Bulblax fights it constantly gives birth to larval Bulborbs, which would be juvenile Bulborbs. But if you mean juveniles that actually walk then I have good news, because in one of the trailers for Pikmin 4 we can see what looks like a larval Bulborb standing on two legs, so in Pikmin 4 we'll probably see more juvenile Bulborbs. And speaking of Bulbmin, because we see small Bulbmin that are clearly the offspring of the big Bulbmin, I think I have a theory on the lifestyle of your average Bulborb. Okay so Bulborbs are birthed by the Empress Bulblax, they're at this moment in their larval stage, where they just crawl around and eat whatever they can find, and probably also their siblings. Then after a while they go trough a metamorphosis where they grow legs, like a frog, but they haven't developped their classic spotty look, so let's call this the juvenile phase, they can now go to the surface but only at night, we'll get back to that later. Then after some time passes they get their spotty look, at which they've entered the adolescent phase, and they now can somewhat safely go to the surface, again we'll come back to that. Finally once they're the big guys we know them as they're in the adult phase, where they sleep through the day and eat at night. Allright so now that whole night and surface thing. When Bulborbs are born they're really pale and larvea, so being in the sun would probably burn them to death, and because they can't run they'll be easy pickings for all the other creatures. Once they grow legs they can probably safely go onto the surface because now they can run away from danger, but still have to go underground to be safe from the sun, since they haven't developped the protective spotty hide. Once that hide comes in they can be safe on the surface during the day, but they aren't completely safe because they're still small, and if we go off the fact that all the tiny Bulborbs and Bulbears die if you throw a singular Pikmin on them, then it could be argued that the same thing would happen to these adolescent Bulborbs. So they either stay close to an adult Bulborb like we see with Bulbmin, or they only come out at night when it's safer for them. Only when they're big enough to not get squashed by a singular Pikmin is when they stay on the surface full time. Now onto Bulbmin. My theory is that Bulborbs work in a similar was a Clownfish do, as in once the dominant female dies the dominant male next in line will turn into a female, so when an Empress Bulblax dies the next male Bulborb will transform into an Empress Bulblax. Because these are fictional alien creatures we can say that Bulborbs have both working male and female reproduction organs, and that the female organs go into overdrive once an Empress Bulblax dies and needs to be replaced. So the parasitic Pikmin inside the Bulbmin probably activate those organs to create Bulbmin offspring, but not to the extent that the host turns into an Empress Bulblax because that would make them an giant defenseless target, I mean why else are Empress Bulblaxes fought in giant empty rooms? Because there's nothing there to pose a threat to the Empress Bulblax. Anyways, because those organs don't go into overdrive the Bulbmin is only able to create 10 or so offspring instead of the endless horde the Empress Bulblax makes. So because it isn't endless the adult Bulbmin makes sure that the juvenile Bulbmin keep following the adult, because that way it can then keep the little ones safe and make it to adulthood.

It’s four pages big with lots of erases and rewrites. And a couple things I think were interesting to compare. For one, I think it’s fascinating to consider the Bulborbs as Mammals. Personally, I had leaned more towards amphibians as the Pikmin wiki page says that they seemed to have more of those traits, but ultimately had sectioned them off on their own since they hadn’t really seemed to fit into either that well. Also, I ended up putting the Red and Orange Bulborbs in one clade, and the Hairy and whip tongue in another, to say both pairs are close relatives. Underneath the hair on the Hairy Bulborb, the creature is white with blue spots, and has a dark nose that lightens. The whip tongue bulborb has some very similar features. White with dark spots, albeit black instead of blue, and a dark face. Now, color isn’t everything, of course. But it seemed odd how similar the color palette of both are. But overall, I was a fun challenge. But I also used the heck out of the wiki pages though, so there’s that

Sorry to barrel into the video’s construction like this but, multiple invertebrate and vertebrate groups have indeed achieved viviparity! Not to mention setae have also evolved in multiple groups of invertebrate and fur-like integument has evolved at least twice within the vertebrates (archosaurs and mammals), not to mention invertebrates have access to setae. Therefore it is not conclusive enough to say bulborbs and co. are mammalian, as they could be any number of things. Another important thing is that the empress bulblax doesn’t give birth to a well-formed baby like a placental, and while it might not rule out marsupials, the baby is entirely limbless, meaning it’s more similar to the larvae of amphibians rather than to a newborn marsupial. The water dumple is also very un-mammal like yet is one of the bulborb’s closest living relative lineages, it seems somewhat unlikely to me that a mammal would reduce to a blind, water-breathing (they aren’t mentioned to go up for air) form regardless of how far into the future you go.

Really not sure about the pinnota being a mammal. It more greatly resembles something like a tunicate or sort of mobile porifera. Other than that absolutely fantastic video.

Amazing video i know you havent made any pikmin content in a few years but it would be great to see a remastered version of this video in a higher quality and maybe including more species in the Pikmin universe

pixel art advice/ feedback : your structure/form or however you would phrase your skill in the making good shapes is very good, but your shading colors specifically are dull, your color choice is great but when you shade something you simply make the darker parts darker, i recommend you along with making them darker you change the hue warmer if your making something brighter, and make it cooler if you are making something darker, also decrease the saturation if your making something brighter and increase the saturation (not too much) if your making something darker

The Vehemoth Phosbat is a confusing one... it DOES look mammalian, and is clearly based on real world bats... but its form of reproduction seems to be NOTHING like a normal mammal at all. They have these weird egg-like cocoon pods that spit out offspring rather than live birth. I think the line between species is blurred in the Pikmin universe, as the Grub-Dog family also has a lot of similarities to insects like ants and bees, where they have a very large queen who is in charge of producing larval offspring, despite all their mammalian traits.
@Manny4Life948
@Manny4Life948 5 ай бұрын
Phosbat to me, at least seem to be a amphibians, due to their egg sacks, releasing their babies on their own, and the slimy skin (plus the wings not resembling anything like a bat) Grub dogs moult, so they can’t be mammals or snails, unless you’re saying mammals adapted to molt, which at that point means that’s a new type of family. So I say grub dogs are in their own family, descended for mammals (on why they have hair and complex eyes) but also being their own thing. Sort of like birds and dinosaurs.

With the Empress Bulblax, I wonder if she can only give birth to only one species of Bulborb (not counting future Empresses) or if the larvae can grows into different Bulborb species depending of the living conditions, if the latter was the case, the fact that the larvae themselves are a different species would make sense.
@Manny4Life948
@Manny4Life948 5 ай бұрын
I think it’s most likely that there are just different types of empresses for different species, since the whip tongue basically confirm that every second molt looks the same (besides the bulbear but they’re have more parental instinct than any other grub dog)
