Is this done with genuine gold leaf or gold on base? I have tried it with gold on base but it turned out very patchy & tarnished after a week or so before i cleared it. I layered it, brushed all the overlap off and burnished it with soft cottonwool but still turned out very patchy. I also had some sheets of a slightly different colour, almost like they had a copper tinge to them. I would send you a picture but it wont let me post here. Thank you in advance for any advise you can give. Fantastic work on your helmets, been following you work for a while now.

do you have to put any type of adhesion promoter on the goldleaf for the black paint to adhere to it properly. obviously you cant sand the goldleaf. or do you simply spray the color on top without any adhesion promotor or sanding

Hi Lalramengmawia. It is call "Gold Leaf" and it is real gold that is made so thin that a slight breeze is enough to rip it. It is applied onto an adhesive coating called "size" and then it has clear coat applied over the gold to protect it.

when you applied the squares, it looked really bad, how did you get it to look flawless and look like no gaps at all in the gold squares you put on ?

It's how the gold leaf works. It's really fine and it tears really easily so anywhere there is a bare patch of substraight with adhesive showing the gold will stick to right up to the edge and then any loose leaf that overlaps just breaks off and falls away.

Hi Samtanto. It is called Gold Leaf. It is real gold that is pressed so flat that a slight breeze can rip it. You have to apply an adhesive called size before laying the gold on.

Die cut stickers and waterslide decals make things much simpler.....All of this work used to be hand masked and painted. It takes a lot less talent these days, to look great. Nice work anyway.

Yes i have painted a few helmets. My main point was not to doubt your talent. Just to point out, that the work that is now mainly done with die-cut decals, and waterslide decals these days. Had to all be done with hand masking and ultra controlled airbrush work before. I think that it is fantastic that helmets can be produced much quicker, and more cost effectively than before. It was near on impossible to make a living doing helmets a few years ago. I love seeing what people can get done today, and be able to make a living from it. I ended up making a living as a sports photographer.(mainly bike racing) But my first love will always be helmet art. I wish you a great future doing what you love.
