Something I've noticed people are tending to miss in The Alchemy is the Touch Down is also likely referencing a plane touching down, that she's coming back to America, her roots and finding love here after a string of "blokes" from the UK
@terra__incognita7 ай бұрын
Yes, no one has mentioned that yet that I've seen. She went from Harry, to Matty apparently, to Calvin, to Tom, to Joe, and back to Matty. Now she's dating a football player, who could almost not be more stereotypically American.

I keep hearing people initially say the album sounds very samey with the production but I can't help but disagree. I think for this album the production really resembled the story that was being told and took a backseat with the bells and whistles to really put the emphasis on the lyricism and story that Taylor needed to tell. Subtlety does not equal bad production. I think this album is definitely a grower because it takes time to digest the lyrics and then the production and lyrics come together.

11:48 This is a take about that line that I’ve definitely never heard before. Most people, myself included, interpreted this line to mean that this is the closest she’s ever come to getting engaged, and her heart was exploding with excitement. Which makes it that much more heartbreaking, because well, she has obviously *still* never been engaged.. 😢

ok so Clara Bow is complex but also unfortunately really heartbreaking, not so optimistic in my opinion-Clara Bow was a film star in the 1920s i believe, considered to be the first "It Girl." She had a mental breakdown because of her relationship with fame and rumors in the media I believe. if you look at the lyrics it's kind of like skipping forward generations, going through what people are telling the new "pretty young up and coming thing" to get them to join the industry and then to eventually tear them down when they think something new and better is coming ("the crown is stained but you're the real queen" / "it's hell on earth to be heavenly"). The end is really eerie to me-she's recognizing her legendary status at this point, but also the fact that her name is probably being used to excite and lure this new generation of young girls, "you're like Taylor Swift but better in this way," just like people did to her using other women who came before her, and she unfortunately knows the costs that come with joining this industry. it's a fascinating and really good song, and an especially interesting closer to this album that deals so much with her complicated relationship with fame/the public/her fans. my favorite is by farrr Guilty as Sin! Followed by Florida, I Can Do it With A Broken Heart, Down Bad, and But Daddy I Love Him. the songs definitely grew on me a lot after first listen so curious to know if they will for you! loved the reaction

@@Luscent yes this song definitely hit so much harder once i went back to relisten and was able to really digest to the full album, especially looking at how much an unmanageable level of fame is a central theme of the album! it's not one of my favorites (though i sitll really like it) but it's a genius closer for this album i think
@brandyanderson35228 ай бұрын
To add on both Clara Bow and Stevie Nicks constantly had their relationships scrutinize in the public eye, the same way that Taylor experiences. Stevie Nicks was often blamed for the breakdown of Fleetwood Mac, when the band was sleeping around with each other. But somehow she became the villain and they the victims
@jordanashleybarney8 ай бұрын
I love how to approach each song from its metaphor, rather than trying to pull a static literal meaning from each. The way you dissect lyrics afterward is such a literary breakdown, treating each like its own poem. Yet you really react to the production and melodies during the listen. Think I just found a new fave reactor!
@joeliz90828 ай бұрын
I did not get a feeling of production being stilted or repetitive or comfortable when I listed to it. I genuinely feel like it's completely different to anything she's ever done before while still being an extremely cohesive album in itself. Because this is another album in the same genre as the previous one, it makes me wonder if people were expecting perhaps a completely new sound or genre due to the fact she has successfully done this in the past (country to pop to indie back to pop). I sometimes worry that because Taylor has reinvented herself so many times and has often made drastic changes between albums that create surprise, reviewers may create a standard for her albums that they don't hold other artists too - seeking some sort of shock factor within the album. I just wonder whether people are setting themselves up for failed expectations by subconsciously hoping or seeking a new album that is outside the genre of her past album when they wouldn't normally do this for any other artist?
@creamkookie59328 ай бұрын
You articulated my thoughts so well, so many artists stuck to the genre and the type of music they’re comfortable with - and I haven’t seen the lashings for them that TTPD got this time around. This is just an extremely cohesive album
@Luscent8 ай бұрын
yeah maybe theres some truth in that - I certainly do hold her to a high standard! I do think though as an artist its important to keep challenging yourself and to develop sounds that evolve in the same way your lyrics do as you age and I think thats something that Jack cannot offer her anymore

Not sure why you keep referring to Clara Bow as a 'character?' She was very much a real person. She was a very famous Hollywood actress during the 1920s, described as the first 'It Girl;' The song seems to be about how young girls are treated by the music industry, and how more established female artists are seen as both an archetype for the new artist to strive toward and as a dying light to be unceremoniously replaced by the rising star. Even megastars at the peak of their powers are ultimately replaceable in a business that prizes youth and girlish beauty above art. Taylor herself, with her long, curly blonde hair and cherry lips would have had the Stevie Nicks comparison at the start of her career, and now she expects that younger female artists are getting the same speech but with her as the target.

right now my top 5 on THIS HALF of the album are: who’s afraid of little old me, guilty as sin, i can do it with a broken heart, loml, i can fix him (no really i can). i thought the same thing about the production when i first listened, but this album is really a grower. jack’s production to me is so subtle that it takes multiple listens to really appreciate it. i also feel like ttpd the anthology is like a gradient from midnights to evermore, production wise, if that makes sense? it starts out very synth, very midnights, but by the end it’s very folky and piano-driven. almost like she is shifting from this manic and chaotic moment to depression and acceptance. it’s so interesting. i am so excited for your anthology reaction, i think you’ll love it !!!

From the clues in the lyrics Matty was still struggling with his addictions, being an absolute arse in the stuff that he said, saw all the criticism of Taylor because of him and because she was so adamant that she wasn't leaving that he ghosted her, falling on his sword. But it's also toxic, he almost lovebombed her, promising all she wanted and then ~poof~ vanished. Matty was stopped by a reporter on release day and asked about the diss track and it was clear from his sad, wry smile that he left her or pushed her away on purpose as he finally realised that he could unintentionally destroy almost 2 decades of hard, painful work Taylor put into her career.

Taylor never met Travis until he went to her show one night & he asked to meet her..But at the time her team told him that she can’t talk while she’s performing cause she has to save her voice! So Travis gave his number to someone on her team & asked her to please call him. She did & they’ve been together ever since. When she first started performing for her ERA’s tour, her relationship with Joe had just ended! She was broken & miserable, but the show must go on! Then, Matty Healy is someone she knew for over 10 years, but they always had a thing for each other. However, Taylor felt she should be with Joe who was safe rather than with Matty who made her feel starry eyed! They wrote poetry, letters etc., to each other over the years & as soon as he found out that Joe was out of the picture, he came to the rescue & she fell head over heels. This all started in May 2023, only 2 months after her & Joe called it quits. Matty told her he wanted to marry her, have a family, etc., but it was bullshit! As soon as it became too real, he ran for the hills. Matty really broke her heart even worse than Joe did! So she was dealing with two heartbreaks from the beginning & thru the middle of her tour. Then Travis came in about 2 months after the Matty thing was over & they’ve been together ever since! The Alchemy is about Travis. Most is the other songs are about Matty. 3 songs are about Joe. I love all 31 songs on this double album! I think this album is up there with Folklore & Evermore! Did you know there’s a 2nd part to this Album?
