I've always interpreted the "fuck the patriarchy" line as calling out his hypocrisy - he took advantage of Taylor's youth and treated her poorly, despite his performative feminism.
@DeadSezSo Жыл бұрын
I 1000% agree but I do want to just point out that he was absolutely oblivious to his hypocrisy and could definitely have grown into a more authentic feminist. Only reason I say this is because sometimes people mean well but their immaturity/ego etc gets in the way when they are young. But that doesn't mean they can't be authentic feminists once they grow up some and gain some perspective. Hell, even Taylor had to grow into a more authentic feminist as she got older and realized some of her lyricism and behavior didn't quite represent her feminism in a manner that met her intended standard.

The “fuck the patriarchy” is in quotes so I assume it’s written on his keychain. He’s a Brooklyn hipster with his nod to feminism. Yet he tosses the keys at her and misses. Jake Gyllenhaal and Taylor are both Sagittarius, which is the "fire" sign. So "Did the twin flame bruise paint you blue" is a reference to that. She wrote this song in a stream of consciousness, all in one sitting, when she was 21(for her RED album!). She's 34 now. And Jake's girlfriends are still in their 20s. Knox, the actress who found Taylor in a party bathroom is either Jennifer Anniston or Anne Hathaway, they both have mentioned running into her in a bathroom around the time of her dating Jake. The story behind how this song was created was amazing. Taylor was rehearsing for the Speak Now tour and she was playing her guitar while venting about the whole relationship. She went on for about ten to fifteen minutes. Her mom went to the sound guy at the venue and got the whole thing on CD because they were recording. The studio made Taylor cut down the song to 5 minutes when it first came out on Red, but told everyone it was originally 10 minutes but no one wants to listen to a 10 minute song. With the re-records, she gave her fans the number one thing they wanted, the full unedited All Too Well. It’s become something of a Swiftie anthem.

Some seasoned Swifties might miss things like that on their first listen/watch, but he consistently reacts to them with that disingenuous ‘huh?’ look immediately followed by a clear commentary of what he thinks is being referenced that’s almost always on the nose.

A lot of people also just knew her from her initial popularity of country songs and just dismissed her, and then held onto that initial impression and never bothered to actually listen to anything newer. I had kind of the same view- not a negative one of her, but just "I'm not interested" because that was all I'd known from her and hadn't bothered to listen to anything else, because I didn't think I'd like it. Then I started seeing her on my FYP on Tiktok. Saw the moment when she met Benjamin Button for the first time in her music video... and I started paying a little more attention to her and found I love her newer music!

This might be the finest song released this century. There is not one false note in the lyrics, the music or the delivery. And the "You kept me like a secret, but I kept you like an oath" is such a brilliant line.

I think the f the patriarchy line is supposed to show his hypocrisy. He has that keychain basically claiming he's a feminist and all that, but at the same time he's throwing them on the ground instead of simply handing them to her. If you watch the short film, you'll understand it better. Edit: The song is supposedly about Jake Gyllenhaal. He was 29, she was 20. I believe they ended it after he didn't show up to her 21st birthday party even though he promised her he would (hence the 'you call me up again just to break me like a promise', 'weeping in the bathroom' and 'he watched me watch the front door willing you to come'). She explains that whole situation in the song The moment I knew. Very good song, totally recommend giving it a listen.

Taylor Swift's lyrics are truly an art form and a very in-depth story that she is telling. I love listening to you break them down. For you as an artist with you not even making this type of music and being able able to think deeply about each and every word and sentence that she's singing and break it down the way that you do is truly an art form for you and I truly appreciate it

She sings in this song about a relationship that ends, then is attempted to start again (3 months in the grave is when he finally told her he loved her), which always reminds me that We Are Never Ever Grtting Back Together is also believed to be about the same relationship as this song is. So, he stood her up on her 21st birthday, then tried to play that down, then they got back together, which he wanted to keep a secret, then they broke up a few more times and she finally had to say it is over, no more, we are never getting back together, like ever. Makes a bit more sense why she was so excited to turn 22 and really made that into a big deal after her 21st birthday was ruined.

She is an Icon. Biggest pop star in the world. Self-made billionaire. Not famous for any sex tapes. Or ridiculous family reality shows. She is a very savvy businesswoman. She has such a kind heart. She donates a lot of money to charities. Never signs her name. She has given huge amounts of bonuses to her dancers, band members, backup vocalists, all stage hands, truck drivers.. Like over $100,000 a piece. She has won 12 Grammys, 39 Billboard Music Awards, and 40 American Music Awards. 16 People Choice Awards. Holds 101 World Records. She writes her own music and all of her songs. And for others. I like a lot of her music. She's a lyrical genius. And her bridges.. Wow. People bitch because she writes about her breakups. Well, she writes about other things as well. It's her life, her emotions. Her feelings. Other musicians write about their feelings as well.. Rappers, Country artist, R&B, other popstars.. Perhaps not as well as she does, well, definitely not as well as she does.. 😊

I’ll give you the short version of why she gets hate: she writes catchy songs that speak to a large array of people, and most people don’t have that talent, and they’re jealous. Throw in the fact that she’s attractive and kind, and that just gives people more ammo. People HATE what they can’t be.

I've wondered why people hate her so much too and I come up with men feeling like there needs to be some sort of solidarity in embarrassment. People--particularly men but a lot of women haters do this too--go right to her 'dating a lot' as a put down. But like Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Scar-Jo, ... every. single. male star. ever... have demonstrably dated around far more than her. But the only difference I see is she writes about them. And the men from the songs she writes are embarrassed. And then other men feel this need to put her down on those guys' behalf. That's all I've come up with. Also, they call her fake or calculated. Ummmm she's survived 20 years in the music industry. I'd assume she is very good at business and part of that is media management and being able to be 'on' at certain times and project an image. She wouldn't have lasted a year if she didn't. And I guess people say her songs are 'immature' and then reference a song she wrote at 15. Which of course. But when I was 16 dude that song was everything. And now that she and I are the same age, I see so much to connect with on a metaphorical level in her music. It's evolved but people don't want to try to be open minded.

my favourite detail about specifically the 10 minute version is the break down at the end because she uses the first lines of those verses again, so that we also get to "remember it all too well" in such a long song. it's gorgeous.

I'm a best-selling author and editor who has so much respect for her writing. What you described in the beginning is her 'showing' not 'telling' in her writing. I just realized how deep it goes. Like she immortalizes all that happens in a book and keeps repeating it to herself in the lyrics at the end so that she can prevent herself from being gaslit that it didn’t happen. And so he can’t claim that he forgot it happened she keeps reiterating it by writing it(on a typewriter -it can’t be changed ) and also references red as though he has blood on his hands and he can’t wash it off.

I just found your channel and I’m so glad I did 😊 I think you’re the first person I’ve seen reacting to this song who is able to break down the actual meaning behind the lyrics while also appreciating how amazing of a writer she is. Also, you’re spot on with your interpretation of the keychain. In the short film she made for the 10 minute version, it is literally a keychain that says it. He does throw it towards her as he’s answering a phone call with his back to her and it hits the ground. She also sold the keychains on her website as part of the promotion for Red (Taylor’s Version). It’s amazing how well you understand her songwriting and all of its layers. A lot of people take her lyrics as direct and literal when there’s way more depth to them. She really does know how to setup the scene in your mind or paint a picture of everything she describes in the song. I don’t know how she does it, but she does. All you have to do is listen to a few verses of her storytelling lyrics and it’s like it’s playing out right in front of you.
