I love this! I’m attending a Taylor Swift dance party next month and was considering making this dress. How much do you think it would be to make this myself, including your pattern purchase?

Hi Natalia! I'm in a bit of a tough spot trying to decide whether it would be worth it to go to school for fashion design -- it would be a little tough financially and for other personal reasons. If I did, I would be going to my state University, not an out-of-state fashion school. I'm wanting to be thoroughly competent in pattern-making and garment construction, to confidently and comfotably be able to make my own clothes and have my own brand one day. I know you went to fashion school, and mentioned that you had been sewing since before college. I, myself, have maybe a beginner/intermediate skill set in construction and pattern-making, draping, etc. My question to you is, do you think a person can learn those things to a proficient level as well as they would at school, with KZbin, books, and other online resources that we have these days? If yes, do you think it would be at a terribly slower pace, or about the same? I think that's my biggest anxiety -- not knowing if all of my trial and errors, and stresses of learning are similar for everyone in this field, or if they would be much less and go smoother and faster, if I were at University, under the guidance of a teacher. Thanks, Your viewer & subscriber

Hi! It really depends on what you think is best for you. Everyone has different learning styles and self-discipline levels so some people might thrive in a school setting and others might work better learning on their own. You know yourself best - I really can’t answer it for you, but trust yourself!

@vanity shop - Zoe Hong on KZbin has a pattern making course for about $25 a month and she's an expert - she has so many other resources for fashion designers as well. You'll learn so much from her - she's basically a school for fashion online - amazing videos and demonstrations. I hope this helps and I wish KZbin was around when I was young. Also, I went to FIT in NYC as a continuing education student and only took the classes I needed - I didn't go for a degree - if you're a good pattern maker, that's what matters if you're going for a job, not necessarily your degree. My opinion though - you have to decide what route you're going. Best wishes for much success! I hope you don't mind me weighing in Natalia!?

@@madelinegrudens Not at all! Thank you for the reply. I do know of Zoe, and watch her videos, as well as several other online fashion courses. My concern is about not having an actual teacher guiding me on if I'm doing things correctly, and wasting time figuring out if I'm doing things right or not, when I could easily have guidance/it laid out for me from someone who knows more. Was your experience that your teachers were there for support on any questions you had, and checked if you were doing things correctly? Or were you about the same pace of learning and figuring tough things out, as anything you learned on your own?

I definitely think it's helpful to have a teacher/mentor but once you've taken the class you're going to have to practice and fit a lot of garments .... There's no way around it... Good pattern making takes years to perfect but if you have a great foundation of the fundamentals you'll be in a good place, but practice is key.... The best designers are always perfecting so it's really up to you to decide if you're the kind of person that needs feedback, then I would take some classes and see if it's a fit... No pun intended

I'm confused. It looked like you were sewing the zipper just to the lace layer. I didn't see it being sewn to both the lace and lining layer at the same time (at 6:16). You only have it clipped to the lace layer. Don't you sew the zipper to both layers at the same time?
@NataliaTrevinoAmaro
@NataliaTrevinoAmaro 9 ай бұрын
The zipper is sewn to both layers but at the top of the dress there is only the sheer layer, not the lining, so it starts there and then makes it’s way down to where the lining starts

The sizes on the pattern are totally off. I cut out the size 6 and cut out the lining in satin and sewed it together and it wouldn’t fit around a skinny mannequin with a 23 inch waist! This mannequin is definitely not even a size 6. It’s a skinny store mannequin. So I just wasted some expensive fabric not to mention a few hours of time and effort and frustration. I should have cut it out in a practice fabric first but I didn’t have any and trusted that the size 6 would be bigger than I needed (I erred on the larger side) and ended up with something that might fit around my dog but definitely won’t fit around any human girl I know in real life. I would say now I get why she cut out like a size 18 in the video even though she doesn’t look like a size 18. So whoever she made this pattern, she didn’t make it correctly for sizing at all. I’m just thankful I didn’t cut my expensive lace overlay fabric yet!!

Hiii! I didn’t cut a size 18 for myself, it was for a customer. Could you please email me so we can get this sorted out/I can try to help?? Thank you! natalia@nataliatrevinoamaro.com

@@NataliaTrevinoAmaro Oh ok. That explains why you cut out size 18 then when you look so tiny yourself. I’m actually just going to bed right now but tomorrow I’ll take photo/video of the pattern pieces and the sizing square showing it printed at the right scale and the pieces sewed together and how it measures up against both a tiny dress form and this skinny mannequin I have.

Interestingly, I started making the dress yesterday for my daughter who is a size 2 as per the sizing on the pattern. The lining was too big and the overlay too small. Thankfully I'd mocked it up with leftover fabric so twigged the problem before using the actual fabric.
