Did Joe “write” some of the songs? Sure. But I think his involvement was way overblown. I think Taylor was trying to support him and build him up by overemphasizing his contribution and selling him as an artist. Maybe as a way to make Joe feel special and breathe new life into their relationship by collaborating. I just don’t buy it. I also think that’s clear from Jack’s reactions and and how he subtly undercut whatever Taylor was trying to say about Joe.

Hey Swiftologist, I have been going through your videos one by one over the last couple weeks.... just started this one and I'm looking forward to watching the whole thing. It's been obviously some time since a) Longpond came out and b) you made this video, and I feel we've learned so much more about this album in that time. But just some immediate thoughts, 1) you're so god damn eloquent when you speak and have such authoritative takes on her sound, artistry, impact, tea -- all of it! You're so eloquent and I really admire how you speak 2) this album played on repeat at launch -- and is pretty much a daily listen -- in the last 1.5 years or so since it came out, I've only dived deeper and deeper into the stories here, and I've really landed on this is such a personal album for her and by saying she was allowed to live in fantasy and make up stories, it was freeing to share thoughts she never really had before. My tops are Exile, this is my trying, illicit affairs (turns out I'm also an august), epiphany, peace, hoax, the lakes.... (most songs on the album). Anyway, now I am just rambling, but when you say at the beginning this album appears to be about mental health -- I 100% agree and this album has saved me so far.... I hope it continues to. Thanks for sharing your insights and perspective with us.

It’s interesting to me what you (and Taylor) said about not knowing what Hoax is about. To me, it seemed clear that, at least parts of it were about Scott selling her out. It also seemed clear (again, to me, personally) the scars from being torn apart were the backlash/cancellation of 2016. I suppose, it’s because my mind immediately went to the part in Miss Americana where man she said that being called conniving, wicked, a bad person was the one thing she wasn’t able to recover from. Then, when she said that “what you did was just as dark… this is just as hard” I associated with Scott’s betrayal of her. I’m not saying that interpretation works for the entire song but, IMO, it works for a good bit of it. Just some thoughts. 😊

I think with This is me trying and epiphany, if you were experiencing something traumatic or depressing, they can really hurt, esp with this is me trying. Like I don't have an addiction problem but I did screw up in school at the time and felt helpless bc I thought I ruined my whole career. Epiphany also helped me get through feeling depressed in COVID. SO, I get it might not be her best songs, but they definitely hit for me.

same. I think it may be because during the pandemic I had just gotten out of college, could not see where my life was headed and was struggling with alcoholism and suicidal ideations, but the song made perfect sense to me from the second I heard it. I don't listen to it as much anymore having gotten out of it, but now see it as a precursor to a more direct and literal "Anti-Hero" or "Dear Reader"

Singles are just the songs that get highlighted. They usually get music videos and are pushed out to the radio stations more. Sometimes they are released before the album and sometimes after. Sometimes Taylor will wait and see what the fans like and then make that song a single.

I don't think the way you talk about Joe is respectful enough. He is her boyfriend and he has been there for her for more than 4 years during thick and thin.He is very talented and supportive. He has a whole ass English literature degree FYI and Taylor said he plays piano beautifully so it's not surprising he writes songs with her.Besides, the fact that they are so secure about their relationship that they can write break up songs together and then laugh about it shows this relationship is what Taylor needed. You don't have to like Joe,but Taylor loves him so much that she wants to run away with him and go to The Lakes. You have to respect him and what he does for Taylor.
