You should hear the speech Taylor gave when she accepted her Honorary Doctorate Degree in the Arts from NYU last year May. It was an awesome speech, no one looked bored. And since her Midnights album came out we found out she gave us an easter egg on one of her songs in her speech.

Thank you for such a thorough analysis, many people would not consider this as one of her best-written songs since they dislike the repetitiveness in the chorus while not knowing it is an artistic choice. And this song, along with another pop-perfection of hers called "Style" is said to be written about her relationship with Harry Styles. The line "2 paper airplanes flying" can also be referred to as the matching paper airplane necklaces that they wore back when they were dating. "20 stitches in the hospital room" is said to be talking about a snowmobile accident that they had. Personally, I think she uses the "wolves" in this song to represent the media that always speculate on their relationship back then since in another song she does something similar when saying that the media is the hunters and him and her are the foxes. Btw, this is one of the rare occasions where she played this song acoustic, which is the type of situation that Taylor would shine brightest as an artist, but the normal live version of this song is very bombastic. Edit: since this is the first time you discover the more powerful side of her voice, I think it could be cool if you watch her live performance on the 1989 tour, (she did some crazy vocals for this song).

Hey Nick, loved this reaction! If you liked this, I bet you would like the rest of this performance from the Clive Davis Theater. Especially "Blank Space" and "Wildest Dreams". "Wildest Dreams" is my favorite (it's just her and an electric guitar) but "Blank Space" is great too. She plays acoustic guitar on that one and gives a really interesting explanation of the song before she preforms it. Her voice sounds incredible in both. I think they are some of her best solo live performances. Hope you are having a good day 🙂

OOTW is in my top 3 of her catalog, I’ve just always loved it on first listen. As everyone has suggested, the 1989 performance is legendary. OOTW has arguably top 5 bridge in her catalog.

She did this live with her band at the 58th Grammy Awards, too. A bit different from the tour version. re: Paper Airplanes. Yes, it is a good metaphor for a very short flight. And --- Harry Styles had a necklace with a paper airplane, and she got one to match. In the music video for OOTW, she rips the chain off and throws it away, but then tries to grab it before it is gone. .. . too late, She had a couple relationships that were on and off and on, and this was one of those. edit: the accident in 2012 was on a snowmobile, and the stitches left a scar on Harry's chin.

This performance solidified my appreciation to this song. I didn't like the album version of the song because as people have said in the comments, the repetitiveness of the chorus. I don't like when Taylor repeats the same line as a chorus. but this performance plus the 1989 tour performance made me love this song. though, since you said you don't like pop that much, i'm not sure you'd dig the album version. the tour version, maybe cause it's so powerful. but maybe you'd like it. that's why I sent you songs from evermore. cause they more chill and less "in your face pop". but I do wonder if you'll dig Taylor's pop. cause she has "bubble gum pop" which I hate but she also has great pop songs..

I think "built to fall apart, then fall back together" has something to do with how they were both big celebrities who were built up by the media and their fans. Then the public wants drama. The public wants to see a happy ending. So some of this stuff was just completely out of their control. "Like we stood a chance" you know?

This song is about her and Harry Styles. They got in a snowmobile accident in Utah (where I live) and Harry had to get 20 stitches on the bottom of his chin. 🫶
