One of the most heartbreaking songs she has written! I still can't move on to the the fact that she turned "old habits die screaming" into "even if I die screaming." It makes me think that she's the old habit, and it's gut wrenching. I also remember someone on yt saying that this is the All Too Well of this album!

Old habits die screaming meaning it’s hard not to repeat the same habits like going back to a relationship that you know is over, but as she says, “I thought I was better safe than starry eyed”. If you notice throughout the song, her scream gets louder, and then at the end it fades off because as more time goes by it gets easier to move on and the scream starts to fade out.

“Old habits die hard” - I think it’s in reference to habits that you get used to in a [long term] relationship. For example, turning off ones location 😬👀 She also says “6 wks of breathing clean air, I still miss the smoke” - like, I know it’s bad for me, but ~old habits die screaming~ and I miss what’s bad for me. 😢

I think the expression "old habits die screaming" means that it's hard to break them, you'll try to break them but they go down screaming and fighting. I also very much enjoy "I hope it's shitty in The Black Dog"

Old habits don’t just die hard (meaning that it’s hard to break a habit, and the longer you have the habit, the harder it is to get over it. Screaming is saying it is not just hard, but they are fighting, and yelling and just not going away silently.

After a couple of listens, I realized that every time she says "screaming", it changes and gets weaker and weaker. Like in the beginning she's angry and screaming for her life, and it gets quieter each time, like she's running out of energy to keep screaming.

It’s the same in “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” She does another louder scream towards the very end, but it starts with her full on screaming and each repetition of the chorus she sings it much calmer until the final one.

She did have her house on Cornelia Street (another song of hers when they were still together) in London and she did truly sell that house. It only had memories of them being happy together and she just couldn’t go back there again. An “esoteric joke” is an inside joke that only a few people know what it’s about. Usually best friends or couples. I’m sure you two have some. Like the last 9 blank seconds of the lyric video. Jkjkjk. 😂 Jeremiah bops his head so fast, even when it’s a slower paced song. For everyone saying this song is about Joe, this song is 100% about Matty Healy. Taylor left Joe, not the other way around. The Black Dog BAR, not the pub in England, is in Cork Ireland and it is a place Matty Healy played with the 1975. Taylor was with him there. Lyrics such as missing the smoke, making fun of me with some esoteric joke, tail between your legs you’re leaving, etc… all references to Matty. Nothing in this song relates to Joe.

The Black Dog is also a Pub in London that Taylor & Joe used to visit. The owners of the Black Dog said after this album dropped they are so busy, and happy. They also made created a drink named after Taylor. I doubt Joe visits there anymore. 🍹
