Distortion makes it so the sound of the guitar/pickups has a no effect on the tone, because distortion distorts the actual signal so much it masks the pickups/guitar
@bodi.mp35 ай бұрын
@@dankhill6851 distortion def tends to hide imperfections, but pickup def makes a difference. Height, amount of wax, design/purpose, how high the output is, if it’s active or passive, how it’s wired into the guitar, and smaller things that probably make a small difference depending on situation and what you’re trying to achieve. Yeah, distortion will cover up the sound, if you want GOOD tone (at least a way I often achieve it) turn down the gain to the point that the guitar still shimmers, and at that point, pickups for sure have their own distinct sound. Branding is the biggest price increase, but there’s a reason why a Seymour Duncan is better then a china bucker for 14 bucks (tho still good situationally). Mainly, I use gain to bring out the tone of the guitar and the pickups, not hide it to make everything sound the same, I recommend you mess around a bit Source: I work at a guitar store, have build my own guitars, and switched out pickups on stuff
@dankhill68515 ай бұрын
@@bodi.mp3 Glenn Fricker tested this idea out, pickups didn't effect the overall tone on a distorted signal.
@bodi.mp35 ай бұрын
@@dankhill6851 I’ll check out his research, but I’m saying it depends. Realistically, not all players are going to turn their distortion gain to 100%, so lower gain will still allow individual pickup characteristics to show. A firsthand example is a homemade Strat I have, we used a cheapie Amazon humbucker originally, but recently I changed it to match what was in my Guild Bluesbird, and it has so much more bite. You can probably dial in the tone knobs and vol to get within the same range, but if we’re talking about straight signal, pickups are different. If we really want to say that tone and vol knobs matter then why don’t we apply that to amp logic and say that amps don’t matter? (Check out Jim Lill’s videos, I’m kinda referencing his amp one, but he compares pickups briefly too in his tone wood video, I gotta watch more of his stuff tho). Idk, I’m not trying to be argumentative at all, but from experience I can just say I’ve noticed differences, maybe they can be smoothed out to be the same, but with a dry signal, they are definitely different. In the end it doesn’t really matter, I just need it to pickup the string vibrations, they all do the same thing regardless so the changes that I do feel like I notice are not that important compared to other things. Anyway I’m the yapper of the century, imma stfu now, sorry for rambling. Like I said, I’m not writing this because I’m angry or arguing, I’m just kinda a geek and get carried away typing lol. I’ll try to find Glenn’s stuff in a lil bit, I love tests like that. Tone debates are goofy lol, I’m a victim myself, but that’s a good excuse to keep learning ig (Edit: holy fuck that is a huge ass wall of text, feel free to disregard lmao)

The guitar may be "unbranded," but that QC says to me that the axe is a Glarry. I bought a guitar and a bass guitar from them a couple of years ago. I don't play that bass, but I don't blame it since I've never set it up. The guitar I accidentally destroyed, which was also my fault. That said, both those axes needed work and were useless to beginners. I've acquired some setup tools and some experience, and I needed both for these axes. That's okay for me, but anyone who DOESN'T have guitar tech skills should only get one of these to start learning on. The low cost will console you if you frag one like I did.

I've met plenty of "experienced" guitarist that have played poorly setup instruments because they never knew it could be done better. On these cheap imports the number one thing that is almost guaranteed to be wrong is High nut action. even if they figure out how to intonate the instrument, every note fretted on the first for frets will be pulled sharp, and anytime they play cowboy chords they guitar will sound horribly out of tune. If a new player is fighting the instruments the whole time they are trying to learn they are more likely to stop playing. and all this is assuming the guitar has good fret work. Some of these no name guitars are good, but some are terrible. Even most experienced players don't know how to dress sharp fret ends or deal with spotty fret leveling. You can get a Squire, Ibanez Gio, Epiphone, ect.. for not much more money. With the name brands you'll get a warranty and generally speaking a guaranteed return/exchange policy. Depending on where you buy the instrument it may come with and instore inspection/setup. like what sweet water does. All of these are better options for beginners. For someone that knows what they are doing who wants a cheap project/beater/backup axe, then yes i agree some of these no name axes are a steal.

The reason is because a lot of companies essentially just hire the same factory to build their guitars when in the same price ranges, so you will see the same exact guitar sold under multiple names because it’s an easy way for a factory to get rid of stock and easy for the seller to get their stock faster. You can see this with Harley Benton and IYV and a few other companies. Harley Benton and IYV both sell a mustang copy with a jazzmaster bridge and they are the same exact guitar; the only difference is Benton has slightly better QC requirements than IYV does.

Not a mark on it,so the reason was to hone my skills at neck work,levelling,crowning and polishing,and general set up. The fun bit,plays like a dream,lovely action and clear clean notes and although a chunky neck feels good even against my strat which is quite slim compared to the glarry. My point being,someone could have soent hours learning how to work on a guitar without the fear if dumping a few hundred on something playable only to get it wrong and bugger it up. I enjoyed my time working on the cheapy,and the time spent was worth it cos i got a Dean guitar with a 10mm action and a truss rod wound so tight i had to put pressure on the neck to ease it loose so it didnt strip(thanks stewmac!)and that guitar after a lot of work is also playing fine although does require a fret level and dress but ive held off for a few minths due to the severity of the neck,so its getting played and settling nicely and in a month or so I'll remove the neck for final finishing. Most if the work would have been far more stressful without the glarry to practice on! Ive played some shit you wouldnt waste a gallon of fuel on for a campfire,but i still enjoyed making a noise with them!

Alternatives to get the stuck string out: 1. Put it in a vice and use a small hammer and nail to knock it out. 2. Loop the string around through the same holes and give it a good tug from the other side. 3. Use a pair of needlenose pliers to crush the ball and pull it out. The second method is what I do when changing strings if the ball part didn't fall out, since I don't want to bother opening the cavity. I slip it through and it normally falls out or at least gets close enough for tweezers or a magnet to finish the job.

Great vid! I was surprised that sounds came out of it and that it held tune for any length of time. Epic smash, too, haha. I don't understand why these ultra-cheap guitars always try to go with crazy pickup and bridge arrangements... You'd think somewhere one of these companies would slap a single pickup, volume, and wraparound tailpiece on something like this and make a totally usable instrument at this price out of it.
@TaylorDanley7 ай бұрын
It was a lot of effort to get it there, but yeah I was surprised also! You'd think they wouldn't stretch that tiny budget so thin, but what do I know 🤷♂️
@raphaelcalado43356 ай бұрын
It was a better guitar than I would assume, but the question is if it could be practical to a student on a budget, judging by Brazilian prices, the setup would be as costly as the guitar, and if you are unlucky, chances are you would have to buy parts making it even more costly.

My very first bass is actually from wish, same deal unbranded thing made by probably whoever makes Glarry and such. And honestly I got REALLY lucky with it, decent fretwork, neck was chonk but that’s not really an issue personally, got me playing 👍. I’ve since upgraded the pickups and the tuners and that’s about it, I’ve had other basses but this one seems to be the one that I use the most. Like I said though I got a lucky one, I’ve seen some craaaaazy QC passed glarrys like the one in the video, wouldn’t take that chance and buy an instrument from them again, but overall I’m pretty stoked on mine
@kingmultichaos15054 ай бұрын
I think for a Beginner its good enough. most important for a beginner is that they don't have to tune every minute! but i would recomment after a year to invest more like the 300$ mark
@troyfrink7 ай бұрын
I got a Glarry Ibanez RG copy a year or two ago. I ordered a bright yellow one, but I received the same color as you did. I think it could be decent, but the neck feels nothing like an Ibanez and the tuners are crap. It does not stay in tune at all. I am considering sanding down the neck to Wizard specks and updating the tuning machines and the bridge, but I don't know if ti's worth it.

If you like tinkering and messing with stuff, then more power to you. Personally, the amount of effort to get a lot of these guitars playable, not even comfortable, is not worth it IMO. You can get a Jackson JS11 for like 159 and it destroys other budget guitars.
@troyfrink7 ай бұрын
@@TaylorDanley That makes sense. I go from wanting to tinker with stuff to not wanting to bother. Fortunately, this thing was less than $100 so I don’t feel obligated to make it work. I haven’t got to the point of smashing it-even though I’ve always wanted to smash a guitar and be like Kurt Cobain/Pete Townsend/Jimi Hendrix.
@theglitch_7137 ай бұрын
Believe it or not I got the same one. Mine had no issues. I have a buddy whose dad's a luthier and had him check it out. Nothing was really that bad besides the frets. So I re did those and replaced the plastic nut and tuners. Thing plays like a charm. Now mind you I do own a Stratocaster I paid 200 bucks for. But some reason I find myself picking up the Fakebanez lol

@@theglitch_713That's awesome. It's probably one of those "luck of the draw" things where some are decent and others, not so much. I do want to get more into guitar repair and setup, so I think something I put

@@troyfrink it pays to learn in the process. Most of what I already know is thanks to my friend and his old man. That's why I jumped the gun on that guitar. I knew it was gonna be a good mod platform for me. Especially since it's gonna be my first build as well. 💪👍👍 (Also I paid like 75 for it altogether on Amazon so it's a Ktaxon (which is essentially Glarry))
@willbarnz69605 ай бұрын
My guess is these are just thrown together, no attention to the details. You might get lucky and get one without bridge/trem issues, with pickups wired completely in phase. To manage that, since there is no showroom to try them out in, would be the luck of the draw. (No telling how many you'd have to go through even in the showroom to find a overall good and recommendable one.} You obviously didn't get the worst of the lot, but did get one that wasn't even close to being cherry-picked to impress either.

As soon as you said Basswood body, I shuddered! Basswood is the cheapest of cheap wood that they make kids wood model and lollypop sticks from. The fibres are so light and far apart, it's just barely a solid structure. Good luck getting any sustain or decent tone out of it!!

Damn that's a gorgeous guitar!! The wish guitar looks good too ngl.. if you think this is bad build quality, then you should see my first electric guitar, the "branding" is just a clear sticker with the words "Musician Pro" stuck on the head, there's a gap between the neck and the body big enough that I can keep my plectrum there. It's like a mini strat, but has a fixed hardtail bridge with individual saddles like you'd find on a cheap tele, and I have honestly no idea what materials it's made of. Was ZAR600 - around $40 - when I bought it in 2002. If I could post a picture here I would..

You should've picked up the infamous Wish Klon clone while you were at it... lol. From other reviews, it would appear ordering that pedal from the same wish storefront will not guarantee that you get the good one - yet apparently some people have actually gotten a really really good klon clone from wish - sometimes.
