Kenny asked Linole Richie to write him a song… this song was the result . Kenny was the original artist. There is also live video where Linoel came on stage and they stung it together. A masterpiece for sure. RIP Kenny, we miss you!

Love this song. I recently saw a documentary or interview about Kenny and Lionel Richie was interviewed. I never realized how deep their friendship was. Lionel said when he came up with the Idea for USA got Africa “We Are the World”, Kenny was either the first (or one of the first) he contacted. He made a point of saying something about that’s why Kenny is close to the beginning of the song. May Kenny Rogers RIP. If you haven’t done “Islands in the Stream”, with Kenny and Dolly Parton, you should. They, also, had a special friendship. I had to chuckle when you mentioned spouses singing this song. I’ve been married 47 years and never once has my husband serenaded me. If he did it now, I would know something was up. LOL

One of the most romantic songs ever written. Greatest collaboration with Lionel Ritchie writing this song and Kenny's raw delivery of a masterpiece. One of those songs you always turn up. Great reaction Craig. Glad we didn't see any tears from you when Kenny reved it up at the end. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Love Kenny Rogers music from when he was with the First Edition (60's-70's) to his solo career. He was a great story teller in many of his songs like "Coward Of The County" & "The Gambler". He had so many hits "Lucille", "Through the Years", "She Believes In Me", "You & I" (written by the Bee Gees) etc. He did a lot of duets such as with Kim Carnes "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", with Sheena Easton "We've Got Tonight" & with Dolly Parton "Islands In The Stream". He also did quite a few duets with Dottie West.

Kenny started out his career with a band called the "First Edition" A totally different song than you have ever heard from Kenny was a song called "I Just Dropped in" If you watch the video, pay special attention to the drummer. You have seen him in many movies and TV shows.

Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton’s “Islands in the Stream” is an absolute must and you must find a live version. Then you can see why they were such great duet partners. They feed off each other. Their friendship was unlike anything else. Still there are rumors that there was something between them which they both deny. Another great duet from them is “You Can’t Make Old Friends”

Also, there is a great video where Kenny is honoring Lionel Richie and tells a funny story about how he got Lionel to write this song. Then Lionel comes up on stage, and they sing this song together. It was awesome! Highly recommend.

Thank you for getting to this one. This is the one instance where I believe a live performance is so much better than the studio recording. I believe Kenny had a slight cold at the performance. That gave his voice a little bit of grit, that fit this song extremely well. Now, if you haven't already, I suggest that you should take the time to watch a video clip from a televised tribute to Lionel Richie. The clip is of Kenny recognizing Lionel for writing this song, and how it all came about. It's not something I think you should react to. It's just a funny story that I think you would enjoy. I'll grab the link to it, and be right back to add it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJSbeoFje9OFn8U

So this is going to sound weird.. but you need to listen to this song two more times, even if it is just for you. It's been around forever and there are three performances of it that take you through the emotions of the life of this song. You have watched the first. The second is Kenny Rogers and Lionel Richie Lady. (It was for a tribute to Lionel and he and Kenny were great friends.) This version will make you smile and happy and is everything about these two. The third... is hard to find but if you can, it's Lionel's performance of Lady at the 2021 Grammy's after Kenny passed away. All three are poignant and beautiful and touch your heart in different ways. Great job.

This is absolutely the best version of this one to watch. It’s been mentioned a couple times, but he an Lionel ended up being the best of friends. There’s another video where they’re just sitting on stools telling the story, but I like the one at the LR tribute.

I saw Kenny at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT in the mid-1990s. It was a spectacular concert, as all of his were. Whenever possible, he always performed "in the round" when playing in large theaters/arenas with the band in the center of the circular stage. He always said he had great luck with picking the right songs and his string of hits certainly proved that. It's great to see so many people re-discovering Kenny Rogers and his incredible talent.

Kenny Rogers and the First Edition, until 1970 billed as The First Edition, were an American rock band. The band's style was difficult to singularly classify, as it incorporated elements of country, rock and psychedelic pop.[3] Its stalwart members were Kenny Rogers (lead vocals and bass guitar), Mickey Jones (drums and percussion) and Terry Williams (guitar and vocals). The band formed in 1967, with folk musician Mike Settle (guitar and backing vocals) and the operatically trained Thelma Camacho (lead vocals) completing the lineup.[citation needed]

Do your Brit family & friends think you're nuts are have you converted any into fans or at least giving it a try? You like Martina...her 1st song I remember was "Independence Day," a play on words, strong vocals & message, big hit. Instant fame. Still suggest Kid Rock live singing "Picture" with Martina in Nashville. Both outperformed themselves. Very fun to watch the dynamic. "Til I Can Make it on My Own," live performance. "A Broken Wing," "Whatever You Say," "Just One More," true country," live. "Wild Angels," "When God-Fearin' Women Get the Blues," "Blessed," "God's Will," "Love's the Only House," "How Far," :My Baby Loves Me," "Safe in the Arms of Love," "Valentine," "I Just Call You Mine," "There You Are," "In My Daughter's Eyes," "Teenage Daughters," "I Can't Stop Loving You," live cover, "Wrong Again," "Reckless," "Anyway," "Ride " "Where I Used to Have a Heart." Did a cover of "Help Me Make it Through the Night." I am catching up and couldn't resist Martina. So many good songs. Never ages! Sang "Chances Are" with Bob Seger - not a cover & not the best but a fun duet to watch. Many other duets & covers, "Help Me Make it Through the Night" and with Pat Benatar singing "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," & "Independence Day," etc. Must have a Christmas album because there are lots of Christmas songs, too. I already, as well as many others, I'm sure, gave you a long Kenny list and Martina has tons of hits & GOOD songs! Sorry, I'll try to stop posting these that probably aren't read anyway. Novels. But Kenny was in The First Edition when younger, "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" and "Just Stopped in to See What My Condition Was In." Have a nice weekend.

This is a part of the soundtrack of my teenage years. Anyone who can listen to this type of music, and then, with a straight face, claim that there's no difference in music, and that today's music is just as good...or for that matter is even "good" at all, is SERIOUSLY deficient in objective musical taste. This is "music", and, by contrast, that foul sounding STUPID nonsense about "sexy tractors" and such, is simply NOT music. Or at best, it is LIGHT-YEARS from being on this level!

I saw Kenny live in concert on Saturday, March 3, 1990, at the Florida Suncoast Dome in St. Petersburg, Florida. I was 17 and infatuated with Hard Rock bands like Guns n' Roses, Skid Row, Aerosmith, etc., but my aunt had free tickets so I went along. Funny thing is that I knew some of his songs from my mom playing the radio a lot at home but was still amazed at how many I could sing along with. Like you said, there was little fanfare or light show but he didn't need it. I ended up having a great time at that concert and enjoyed seeing my mom and aunt smiling through the entire concert. They knew all of his songs! Fast forward a few years and I was signed up for this program through Columbia House where they'd mail me lists of cds and I'd get a huge discount if I purchased some. One of the first batches of cds I ordered from them was Kenny's greatest hits which I now play in the car for my son's to enjoy his music. If they don't quite enjoy it now, someday they will.

One of the best concerts I ever went to. I took my mom and it was just the perfect concert for that. Kenny was popular with all ages! It was at the University of Tennessee in the basketball center and it was done in the round. It was in the 80's and the opening act was Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers who were an excellent country group. An enjoyable evening I hated to have end.

My first record was a 45 with The Gambler on one side and this on the other. I was five years old in 1980 and got it and a Fisher Price record player for Christmas

Kenny Rogers was great at telling stories through songs, but as a man, he was rude. I'm from a reservation in California and he was our spokesman for many years, and he would do a concert every 4 months, but fame and fortune had definitely gone to his head once he left his band Kenny Rogers and The First Edition.

With this performance, Kenny Rogers made women all around the world swoon. My mother loved him and now at my age, I totally get it. Here are Kenny and Lionel, who were great friends, talking about how the song came to be and actually performing it together! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJSbeoFje9OFn8U

Oh Kenny…he sure set a high bar for romance. If I ever marry again (and I’m 56, divorced for 30 years, lol) it will be to someone who feels like that about me and I feel the same for him. I will settle for nothing less. We all deserve to feel that.

Besides being a Legend, he was one of the nicest men in the business. Supportive of all artists and beloved by all. RIP 🙏
