For everyone, there are lines you don't cross. For some it's merely pride, but for most, it's a matter of mess with me and I'm man or woman enough to take it, but mess with my family/friends or weaker, and you've got a fight.

You don't have to fight to be a man but sometimes you have to fight when you're a man. As a woman, this is my favourite lesson in this song.
@geoffbruce28242 жыл бұрын
I love that the two messages of this song are not mutually exclusive. Yes, it better to turn the cheek when you can, bit when it's no longer your cheek to turn then "sometimes you have to fight when you're a man" Every reactor I see with this song at the beginning is like "Yep, great message, turn the cheek!" And then "they took turns at Becky" comes up and suddenly it's all "kill those a-holes" and that is the entire message of the song.

When he says "this one's for Becky, as he watched the last one fall", it chokes me up, every time. No one advocates bar-room brawls, of course---my husband had a few, before I got ahold of 'im---but, there are times.... I, like someone else, said, am surprised he didn't take a gun---as many times as I've heard this song, I still think, when he says "he reached above the fireplace, and took down his daddy's....", I still think he's gonna say "gun", cuz every house in the South has a gun over the fireplace!!

Love Kenny Rogers music from when he was with the First Edition (60's-70's) to his solo career. He was a great story teller in many of his songs like "Coward Of The County" & "The Gambler". He had so many hits "Lucille", "Lady", "Through the Years" etc. He did a lot of duets such as with Kim Carnes "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", with Sheena Easton "We've Got Tonight" & with Dolly Parton "Islands In The Stream". He also did quite a few duets with Dottie West.
