I think you hit the nail on the head about the 90's being a great period for country music. That is when I started liking country music. The early stuff never grabbed me, and I just can't listen to radio with what passes for country music now days. I had forgotten about this gem from Dwight Yoakam. I will be adding it to the new music I was putting on my iPod. He has a lot of great songs. I few of my favorites were "Guitars, Cadillacs", "Ain't That Lonely Yet" and "Fast As You".

@@lindaschultz7900 CMT was generally on over the weekends, back in '93 when they used to just play music vids non-stop, while I was cleaning or chasing my 3 yr old around, and that video was on over and over all day when it came out. I still catch it when I put the '90's Country channel on KZbin when I just want good ole country music to play. ❤

He has a lot of charisma and such a unique voice. The story is told that the split video was his cut vs. the producer's cut. Sadly, she died in one of the planes that hit the Twin Towers on 9-11 as they were just finishing this and he wanted to run them side by side side once he saw the footage. Cool story if it's true, but I've heard it from several different sources.

Dwight is awesome. His song "I sang Dixie" is one of my top ten songs for sure. Also, you are right about the traditional middle period of country in the 90s, BUT there are certainly more periods than three. It seems like every decade has it's competing factions within country music that are either more traditional in flavor or bordering on simply being pop with twang. Traditional story telling all the way!

Now you are playing the good shit! Dwight is a neo-traditionalist who was all about reviving the Bakersfield sound, (meaning Bakersfield CA) started by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. Buck Owens is considered Dwight Yoakums mentor and their collaborations are classics. Dwight is also a great character actor, check out Sling Blade... do more Dwight please.

Dwight's mentor was Buck Owens. Now you've crossed over into Oklahoma and Arkansas, country music. They have their own unique sound. "Meryl Haggard " Okie from Muskogee" and "Buck Owens - Streets of Bakersfield" Johnny Cash all of these artists were in the same era. And your right , Dwight was the next Gen. that followed along with Vince Gill, Toby Keith, Allen Jackson, Garth Brooks. Mid to late 1980's and 90's Dwight even had some acting roles, and he was quite good. great reaction 🎸🔥🎶

I never grew up listening to nor paying any attention to country music but sometimes it’s all about timing. I found country when the time was right for me. I’m 49 now and got into country in 1993 when I was 21. I was driving and was just in the frame of mind to get lost in a song and the right one came on (All These Years by Sawyer Brown) and it stayed in my ears, my mind, and in my heart for days afterward until I had to buy the CD. That’s how it started for me. I love how country songs paint vivid pictures and that each one is its own story. You asked for some songs so please review/react to All These Years by Sawyer Brown; Not That Different by Collin Raye; Till I Was A Daddy Too by Tracy Lawrence; You’re Gonna Miss This by Trace Adkins; One Of These Days by Tim McGraw; Matches by Sammy Kershaw; I’m Not Strong Enough To Say No by Blackhawk; If I Had Any Pride Left At All by John Berry; Ain't That Lonely Yet by Dwight Yoakam; Look Heart, No Hands by Randy Travis; and I Still Believe In You by Vince Gill. That, my friend, would give you a nice look at how great country music was, especially in the 90s (the best decade for this genre imo). Country tells it like it is and if there’s any emotion that you’re dealing with, this genre will bottle those feelings up and make music that will hopefully help you.

However, I would love to see your reaction to some of his other stuff: "Pocket of a clown", "guitars and Cadillacs", "streets of Bakersfield"... My two favorite artists: Randy Travis and Merle Haggard. Merle is one of the classics and Randy is part of that middle era from the 90s that you talked about. So, I LOVE both eras.
