I actually preferred the second season over the first, since I felt that it was drawn out better, particularly the mystery element. However, one thing that the first did better was by having more of the guests mingling with each other. This time round, we only really had Portia and Albie talking.

For me, first season “meant” more as a multi-racial, part Hawaiian. It meant a lot to me to know that a white writer/director was able to bravely and unabashedly tackle concepts like colonization, excuses, assumptions, and lies for BOTH sides of the coin. But S2 definitely had more momentum/tragedy if that makes sense. Like I definitely “felt” sorry for the characters more often in S2, maybe pity is the better word. I love both so much though!

Most of your critiques about the character patterns, repetition and structure of the show is literally a critique on human behavior. Most stories showcase character development in a drastic way, a sort of Shakespearean approach; I think the White Lotus tackles how people don’t really change overnight if they change at all. So it makes sense for the story lines to progress the way they do for some of the characters because it leaves you with an the feeling that these people are humans and they’re messy. I think the White Lotus has a way of making you wonder if these people will ever really change and almost motivates you to BE better, while most stories kind of tie everything together neatly FOR you, leaving you with that satisfying feeling that you’ve done something just because you were rooting for the “good guy”. I think the White Lotis did it’s job in making us see ourselves in these people who we would otherwise write off as spoiled (which some of them are) and provides us with a more complex perspective on class, relationship and sexual dynamics. All in all great show.

Did it need to be renewed? No. It could have stood well on it’s own as a miniseries. Did it make the transition to full anthology show successfully? Yes. White Lotus avoided the trap of peaking in Season 1 by having a second season that’s as good as the first, if not better.

I was surprized to hear that you think there was no development to Rachel and Shane's relationship. It's one of the most exciting developments to me to see what happened to how Rachel feels about her marriage and how Shane deliberately doesn't want to notice anything that happens in their marriage. It's definitely not a "honeymoon sweet tension" that "carries on for the rest of the season"

Okay… When people do flim or TV reviews it really bothers me how everyone judges things in how it “relates to the plot” for example when you spoke about Ethan and how he had a come to Jesus moment multiple times before he would just turn into a screaming teenager again or the married couple who continued to argue about the room… I understand that while yes the writers could have chosen to elaborate on it.. let’s look at it from the lens of the characters both Ethan and the honeymoon sweet couple ( can’t remember their names as I write this) lack emotional depth.. or in the couples case we know the husband doesn’t.. so of course they will continue to have the same battle because the character was written for us to examine as an audience but the character is acting on thoughts and feelings that started before the show… while it may seem that the plot isn’t fully developed I think the character are written this way to feed in to the satire that the plot is creating..

Just because there is male genitalia in the first episode of the first and second season does not mean Mike White is following a template that this is included in. I predict White was not even conscious of this reoccurrence, and they are used for very different reasons anyway. You also think that the Quinn’s character arc in S1 does not progress beyond seeing the sublime beauty in nature, sure it repeats as he mulls over his life and future, however his arc goes much further than what you acknowledge it is not just a repeating thing that does nothing else, he decides to leave his family and stay in Hawaii and bond with other males on the rowing squad. You missed highlighting this point. I think you are too caught up in your own trying to project a superior intellectual overview, i.e. pretentious, that you miss the meat of the show.

Mike White gets a pass for stealing from THE GODFATHER because he telegraphs it in the search of the Digrasso family for their Sicilian roots; the riffs about toxic masculinity in the movie; and the search for actual locations from the film. That makes it more of an homage. -- like the shot for shot steal from Antonioni's L'Aventura in Harper's walk of shame in Noto.

I totally disagree about the look of the second season. Imo it was beautifully shot, the grading was balanced and had a fantasitc relatiionship between good values and color. especially the beautiful architectural elements within the large estates were displayed in a masterful way that empasised the aburd levels of detail and oppulence. I do somewhat agree about some of the exterior daytime shots being too crisp and boring, but where this show excells is the interiors and night time shots. The grading and lighting has a very sophisticated feel, playing on the sophistication of italian art history.

I cared more about the plot lines and characters even if I hated them. In the second I felt annoyed by the repetition. Like the hotel manager being awkward over and over and I cringed every time. Or the couple whose names I forget, I just wanted them both to just have a normal conversation BEFORE one or both of them were at a breaking point. Like why didn't you ask what was up as soon as she randomly stopped talking? It just frustrated me to no end... that being said I still finished it all immediately and was invested in the ending, but I'm hoping for a 3rd season that I find as engaging as the first

For some reason, this video brought to mind a song from Adventure Time, "Everything Stays". It's one of my favorites. Let's go in the garden You'll find something waiting Right there where you left it lying upside down When you finally find it You'll see that it's faded The underside is lighter when you turn it around Everything stays right where you left it Everything stays but it still changes Ever so slightly, daily and nightly, In little ways, when everything stays Go down to the ocean The crystal tide is raising Water's gotten higher as the shore washes out Keep your eyes wide open Even when the sun is blazing The moon controls the tide, it could cause you to drown Everything stays right where you left it Everything stays, but it still changes Ever so slightly, daily and nightly In little ways, when everything stays I really like this, and it's deeply meaningful to me. In the first part, the object has been there for so long that while it isn't an inherently different object, and it hasn't moved, it's sun- and weather-worn. It theoretically functions as intended, but it's old, and it shows. In the second part, change happens so slowly it looks as though nothing has changed at all... at least until it's become so overwhelming that it's impossible to keep up, and the illusion that you ever had control is lost for good.

I enjoyed season 1 much more. I thought the theme wasn't strictly about colonialism. But more broadly about different examples of the power dynamic between the have and have-nots. While lots of their individual stories didn't necessarily go very far, it was more about the uneven relationships and hypocrisies that would slowly develop the characters. I just liked that it was more of a slice of life slow-burn that was about theme more than plot. The climax was just how each character responded to their respective situations. Meanwhile season 2 was the opposite. Being very plot driven and revolving about extremely dramatic storylines. But I think it was at the cost of every character being very serious and somewhat bland. I think Tanya, Jack and Portia were really the only interesting personalities that fed off each other. Everyone else were really just stick-figures moving the plot forward. While I still enjoyed it overall. I just felt it wasn't written with purpose like season 1.

Only the Aubrey's storyline was a bit too slow for me, like her onscreen husband behaved basically the same throughout almost the whole season, thank god there was some confrontation by the end but definitely not my favourite storyline. F. Murray Abraham has such a nice, calming presence, I'm so glad he can be seen a lot recently in movies and shows.

Albie Did not exploit directly anyone Also he insisted his father to give a huge amount of money to the sex worker On his own he was stupid(maybe the writer wanted his character to portray an inexperienced person in dating or sexual relations) and harmful to himself but not to anyone else. Like- 1)falling(romantically) for a sex worker(lucia) who is doing their job 2) trusting unknown people(lucia) who they just met and giving them huge amounts of money and thinking Lucia would migrate to LA and that would be easier for them to date. That scene was where he talks about regressive ,patriarchal construct with his family that are some normal conversation people have with their conservative(even some blue libs have some conservative ideas like the hogs-actual conservative,fasicts) family members. Infact , Lucia came on to him when he was basically rejected by Portia not the other way around as u tried to say in this video He never coerced and forced anyone to do anything they didn't wanna do(Except maybe to his father which 50k USD is nothing to Dominic who admitted himself that 50k was a bucket in an ocean) And the writer made the lazy move and try to put bowtie at the end with the scene of 3 generations turning back and staring at a presumably attractive afab person To make some kind of point("see at the end all men r the same" so basically expressing gender essentialism) which totally negates the whole portraiture they have given to Albie throughout the series of having empathy towards marginalized even though class solidarity(capitalists) should not have made him like that, as rich people have the most class solidarity than the working class,bc they know they have to stick ,if they not they would brought down. And I agree 1st season when their theme was colonization and current cultural genocide by the imperial core nation's-labor aristocrats on the stolen lands and their people,but in the end and even by the last half of season 1 colonization as a topic and as a plot got cast aside. They focused on the individual families and their conflicts, writing felt lazy or they were trying to collect some brownie points they wanted to dabble in some anti-imperialist topics and get out of it bc u have keep the white viewers(labor aristocrats in imperial core nations) not feel bad and enjoy the exotic location and its beauty and it wants u to go there too for vacation. 2nd season I don't know they didn't have any overall theme like they at least tried in season 1 with settler colonization and ongoing cultural erasure. Pointless plots with some people dying with only one important person who cared about the old rich lady forget her name that's it, we didn't care about anyone else dying in this season. The bad thing was that plot made us actually forget about the inevitable murder that was going to happen and in the last ep all shit happened up until that we were witnessing family and romantic partner drama That's what happens when arts majors and film students don't have an iota of dialectical materialism or historical materialism or at least basic material analysis/pov of the world, Instead, they only delve into idealism which makes half-baked political statements in their work and they feel like yeah "I am being neutral here"(committing the middle ground fallacy) Stating plebs are also horny and engage in sex and sit around and the rich(exploiter) are also horny and have sex and sit around all day. "No difference, Everyone doing their own thing ,don't politicize everything man". False equivalence through the roof😂, that's what happens when an artist has no material analysis of the world. i don't expect world-changing change from any media, I enjoyed this series, and that's it, for that we need to organize our workplace and spread class consciousness among the working class. but I also can criticize its lacking at the same time, so that the creator and the viewers can make, expect better content next time

Wow, your comment is all over the place. What he meant about Albi is that he think as himself as a nice guy but he is pushy and invasive with Portia and he kind of expects a relationship with Lucia in exchange for the money. About the money, 50k is a LOT of money 😅. The "overal theme" of the seasson was sex, as colonialism had been in the first season (there is a clip in this video of the creator of the show saying this). FINALLY!! I thought I was only one with this view, season 1 was high concept, clever, and hit themes that werent overly explored. Wasn’t perfect, but at least tried something new and overall hit the mark. Season 2 was good, but how many times have we seen love/lust/sex/power been the theme of a movie and series? Just felt easy and lacked much depth to me
@lps_nine

Too me this theme of sex in White Lotus is very different to most. It's rare that a show critiques sex to the extent this season has, and shows the power sex has. I am happy Mike White decided to change what the main theme was and still give it the same development.
@jpeg204
@jpeg204 Жыл бұрын
Sure sex is a very common topic, but the way this season approached it was very nuanced and insightful, I don't think that movies/shows have to stop talking about sex as a theme just because its so prevalent in media, its talked about for a reason, sex is a massive part of humanity and society, that's like saying media should stop having themes about money and greed because it's done so much, sure if it's done generically then I agree, but the writing and perspective of this season isn't generic.

@@jpeg204 I guess that’s the beauty about art, it’s so subjective and people can have polarizing opinions about the exact same piece of work. I understand sex is a necessary and huge part of society, I love sex as much as the next person, but I’m saying that I believe it’s a topic that is easy to explore, rather than imperialism, colonialism, white privilege and other uncomfortable topics that season one hit; which made me love white lotus so much. Also season 1 was funnier. But that’s just my opinion.

What more did Mike White have to say, you ask? He said, boys will be boys. Oh, and women can play the game as long as they’re beautiful and sexually active. I know he says more than this, but that final scene had me fuming: everyone is happy because they can accept monogamy as a relic of the past, and… again, boys will be boys. This season asks piercing questions only to answer them with excruciatingly archaic answers. I wish the answers were simply presented as a perspective, but rather the message is delivered with finality, a declaration, like, this is just the way the world is. The first season actually had some hope and redemption. The second plants us in a world run by primarily men’s sexual urges (and consequently women responding in order to keep up) telling us that wanting anything higher is actually asking people not to be human. I know the storytelling here is worth the discussion, but what’s it telling us to believe about the world, about the way it should be?

I just don’t think Mike White is that great a writer. Flat characters with all depth essentially amounting to the revelation of trauma. Satire is totally toothless and really obvious. So am I many times confusion on the point of gaslighting.
