Unfortunate for Bhall. Should've just chucked a turbo on his bmw engine and pushed 15psi imo, cheapest option I really hope he didnt use a high volume oil pump. Filling the head is the same fault the rb has, could call it a rookie mistake by even JP..

Solid overall build, I'm doing close to the same on a current project. A couple of tips for next time or anyone looking to do this as well. -You should put some type of sealant on the intake rocker bolts. On most ported heads, the bottom of the hole gets exposed to the intake runner and this can cause issues on boosted engines. Under boost it can create a boost leak that looks like excessive blowby, under vacuum it can burn excessive oil. -Turbo drain-GM already gave you a hole to drain the turbo oil, they just put a level sensor in it. Most will not use the sensor anyways and you can buy an adapter to your choice of drain line.

sucking the pan dry is a myth? i think that only happens with DOD pumps oil control is key, not sure if Jimmy had a pan baffle generally doesn't high pressure pumps require larger bearing tollerances? and high volume is preferred due to reducing cavitation at high rpm and better supports oil coolers/turbos

Nah oil pressure has always been an issue with LS engines. Drifting is about the worst environment for them, Taylor has killed several thanks to oiling issues before he went dry sump - which seems to be the only guaranteed way to keep the well oiled at high speed, high revs and sideways.

I really appreciate the way you describe what you are doing, and why when you are putting something like this together. So many people just skip over it, and it's the step by step process that gives people the confidence to try it themselves. I can slap a 1,000 hp ls together in a day, but 15 years ago I would have been reading every step in the manual 3 times and second guessing everything until the 3rd oil change. It's always nice to look over someone's shoulder thatsdone it before.

Look into the intake ports or reach a index finger in there and look/feel for a hole in the wall of the port directly below the rocker boss. Typically there is a bulge that is the 1st thing that is ported away (unnecessary strength). I dunno on your heads but its likely-please verify. And Google porting the rocker bump for more info

on another note a high pressure oil pump can starve the bearing and cause failure too, the rule of thumb is 1psi of pressure for every 100 RPM your gonna turn so if your only gonna spin to 6,700 rpm a 100psi oil pressure is over kill because at to low if a rpm the pressure can actually cause the oil to not take up enough room in the bearing clearances causing you to spin a rod or main bearing, i always use a high volume pump because none of the engines i build typically spin past 6,500. but it’s all based on application and i never play with turbos. i’m not trying to call you wrong i’m just stating the other side of things for anyone interested

When you go to weld to cast aluminum that's dirty like your oil pan, before you even insert the weld-in bung, get some aluminum brightener in a spray bottle and a small wire brush. Spray the brightener around the area and scrub really well with the wire brush, then spray some more and continue scrubbing. Make sure to scrub inside and out. Then do a quick rinse with water and dry it with a towel, then take your propane torch and hit the area with the torch inside and out for like 45 seconds to a minute inside and out. Then repeat the brightener/ wire brush step again, followed by cleaning with acetone, then hit it with your propane torch one more time. The brightener Is a type of acid that cleans the aluminum really well and gets into the pours, removing any corrosion, oils and other contamination that makes welding to it difficult. After you're done welding you can actually clean the entire outside of the oil pan with the brightener and a brush, then rinse with water and it will make it look like new. Hope this helps in the future.

Isn’t that gear oil just going to drain out of the pump when you flip the engine over? I have heard of packing Vaseline or moly grease in the pump.
@AdmissionGaming

No because when you install it upside down it flows back in, it's common practice on ls installations to start the engine upside down first prior to being put inside the motor vehicle.

I've always had front cover leaks (even with the alignment tool), I'll be sure to follow this order on my next build! (Front cover loose, damper install, tighten down front cover, then put the oil pan on)

I put a drop of silicone where the conners of the cam cover and block meets the oil pan where the common oil leaks are.

If the high volume pump was the cause I would be fairly annoyed with JP, although when drifting you should always overfill the oil pan. RB and LS engines fill the head with just revs..

Hylomar was developed by nasa and Mazda used it for assembling rotaries. We still use it when building rotaries so the seals don’t fall out when we drop in the rotors.

Once again, FANTASTIC info. High volume oil pumps are a very dangerous thing to mess with if you have a stock block configuration.

You should set up a Ziplock bag full of ice at the end of the crank a few minutes before slipping in the heated balancer, works like a charm.

Thank you for keeping the mistake in and not editing that out Taylor, that was rad to see(no offense) being a small channel and struggling constantly I feel it's all I'm doing is making mistakes and that's why I'm not getting views or subs but then I see this and it's like Ok, even one of the greats does Goof up too. Rad.

According to summit racing, a high volume oil pump will not suck your pan dry. High volume is needed when running larger bearing clearances and things like an oil cooler, turbo etc.. they say it will not suck your pan dry.

On ls motors with that stile knock sensors the rear sensor is known to hold water leading to the sensor to rust out and go bad while the front looks brand new. An easy fix is running a bead of silicon around the front half of the hole and you won’t have to worry about it rusting out

Hey man! I did almost the exact same setup following Sloppymechanics build series. I got all of my factory gauges working “piggybacking” the stock ecu. I converted to Silverado electric fans and the stock ecu even runs the fans and AC! Love the terminator with factory gauges! Wish I could have afforded the pro dash though! Sick build!
