Hey Taylor, I'm a BMW tech! When tightening and torquing all the arms down, take a pole jack and lift the side you're working on up so all the suspension is compressed! Makes eyeballing a little easier but also keeps the bushings from binding up and prematurely wearing! Also for the lower control arm bolts and thrust arm bushings! Please for safety reasons, replace the hardware with new OEM or Grade A bolts! OEM bolts are aluminum and are torqued to angle so they are stretched and I have seen them snapping after reusing them!
@mcbridemotorsports57882 жыл бұрын
Truth on the bushings, I worked for the JCW LAP Motorsports Team and they always had me doing the Axle Bolts (6'3 240lbs) The other crew members never really struggled with the 155ft-lb portion. It was the +90 degrees that always got them. (Working in the Paddock with cars on blocks) And I cant even count how many breaker bars I broke loosening those damn things. After about 3 races they were LOCKED in them damn CV Axles!
@JQ_Unity2 жыл бұрын
with a heim/spherical bearing in the arm, not really necessary. I've taken my suspension apart more times than I'd ever liked to lol. Lots of R&D and trial and error until got a setup that didn't keep coming loose with a drift/street setup with wisefab. The rear knuckles were the most annoying with stuck axle shafts and snapping a camber arm bolt before (fullock 65/70 degrees one direction and transitioning) ...many other times of the bolt just coming loose. Ended up putting a longer bolt through it with nut and red loctite. bad wheel bearings can also give random extra play that isnt very obvious at first. Both driver side ones had slight play in em...enough play to make the tie rod heim bolt come loose and make the driver side axle bolts slowly back out (nord locked all of them too and hasnt happened again
@bryanlam86562 жыл бұрын
@@JQ_Unity Yes it’s not required for the spherical bearing correct but the bolts still are torqued to angle from factory. Personally have had bolts break trying to save the customer a few bucks even though the repair instructions we have required us to replace.

Hey Taylor that popping noise on the front end is the brake line retainer bracket on the strut assembly. TommyLGarage has a video on fixing it you basically pop the bracket off and put antisieze on the threads and bracket. Hope that helps!

there's a tool I use almost daily as a tech on those rotor retainer bolts, an impact driver! the kind that looks like a thicc-ass iron screwdriver, and hit with a hammer. The combination of inward and rotational force they apply prevents the rounding of even the annoying Phillips screws that some cars use on their rotors. If it doesn't give from a couple good hits I whip out the heat and kroil (or PB, I know whose video I'm watching) and it'll come after that. If they were stripped from the last guy though I usually go straight to an air hammer with a chisel bit.

@eddiereichel93542 жыл бұрын
6:33 I'm surprised you don't know this but any time your doing suspension work when you tighten bushings you wanted to do it at ride height. With spherical bushings it's less important but still good practice to do so. When a vehicle is on a lift and suspension is at full droop and when you tighten the bushings and set the car down the bushings are stretched at ride height and will tear when suspension compresses.

Upgrading the thrust arm bushing should make a WORLD of difference with how the front suspension feels. Going to a monoball bushing made a bigger difference than installing BC coilovers on my car (not an F80 but the bushing serves a similar purpose). A note on those rotor locator allen screws, use anti seize and don't tighten them too much. They don't need to be super tight but they always seem to corrode in place regardless. If you half stripped one you should probably replace it before it corrodes in place again or you could have trouble next time you need to pull the rotors off.

I was converted to BMW a few years ago. I was into Ae86's and had a few special ones over time but wanted to step into something factory faast and European. I ended up buys a MY10.5 BMW E82 135i. It had some tasteful mods and handled so well. Now while driving through the local hills I noticed that I was getting inside rear tyre spin up and found out I didn't have an LSD. Why a 3L turbo coupe sports car doesn't have a LSD I do not know. Anywho, I looked into swapping in a factory LSD from another car and found that there are none that suite. So next I researched aftermarket LSD's and found that the cheapest was AUD$5,500 because of major machine work that is needed. I was like f**k that. So over the next 6 months I custom fit a Nissan 370Z for less than $1000 and have an abundance of choice to upgrade the center. I don't know why BMW does some things, just like the front end adjust-ability in your car.
