My sister used to be in a very abusive marriage. When he finally decided to walk away from my sister and their 2 little girls, myself and my parents were so happy, because he wouldnt be there to abuse them anymore. He told her on the phone that their empty bank account was on purpose to leave her with nothing and he wasnt done. She quietly packed his things and put them outside for him to pick up(they were living in my parents 2nd home and let them live there for free, didnt even pay taxes). We went to a police station to ask what she should do in her case, and the police officer said NOT to let him pick up the kids because he could keep them from HER until court became involved, and that he could even continue to move the court date so it would take longer. He got lawyers involved to take the kids away from her, but fortunately towards the end of their marriage she'd started taking photos of the bruises on her and the kids. His lawyer advised him he wouldnt control a single thing in their lives due to the proof and affidavits. I only typed all of this out to give you a different perspective on the 2 parent having the same right thing, allowing the other parent to pick up the kids before court has settled things can be dangerous, especially with men like the above mentioned. Its not always selfishness, because my sister is such a nice woman, she would have let him pick them up and who knows what would have happened. Now that he knows hes beat, hes actually trying to co parent and is decently nice about things(hes had his moments of BS) but its thanks to the court system that shes protected. I agree with you that a mother and a father in a childs life is very important. God bless you and your family.
