Hey, I just wanted to say, that I really appreciate these old Bucs game uploads. I'm only 23 and didn't passionately follow football until 2007, so I didn't ever get to see the Bucs in their glory days. I appreciate it and go Bucs!

You're welcome! This game was the season opener for the Bucs after they had won the Super Bowl. It put the league on notice that the Bucs were still on top and had the best defense in the NFL. Sadly the season was filled with turmoil, and last minute heartbreaks. They finished the 2003 season with a 7-9 record and missed the playoffs.

I agree with the Carolina lost. The fact that Julius Peppers blocked an extra point attempt at the end of regulation: that would have gave the Bucs the win, impacted the Bucs season and uplifted the Panthers season.

Brad Johnson came in and did what they needed him to do. Play ball management football. Control the turnovers take what was given him score when he could. Couldn't ask anything more of them, though they tried. How many quarterbacks have they gone through since?

I was seated in the corner of the end zone and witnessed Joe's circus catch up close. What a thing of beauty! Best of all, I was able to boo the Eagles all night with zero repercussions because Eagles fans were so self-hating and demoralized at the time. They simply joined me in trash-talking their own team.

I am fortunate as a bucs fan... being 36 i have memories of the Original orange and red unis (better than the current ones) when the bucs were blacked out every home game at the old stadium and i had to look at the bottom of the tv screen on sunday to know how bad we lost...to the uni/total attitude change and the new stadium excitement in 98 to the SB and to the recent dark times. I am so die-hard home team. People seem to forget how the bucs use to whoop ass not THAT LONG AGO. The reason the rest of our division pretends to be so cocky is because they are RELIEVED every year they are a little better than us. Newer fans wouldnt know but us older fans know a lot of teams are praying the bucs don't figure ish out

Not gonna lie, as fun as it was seeing Tampa shut down the Linc's opener and THAT JUREVICIUS CATCH, I still feel it would have been a bit more fair for the Bucs to open week 1 of MNF at home. They were after all the reigning SB champs and I think that should have trumped an NFC-CG rematch. I could make a case they could have flip-flopped the Giants/Tampa game from November as the MNF week 1 opener or maybe Parcells/Dallas could have opened at TB Heck, I remember the Jets/Redskins on a Thursday was the first NFL game of that season. With the Easts playing each other in interconference, why not just have the Jets and Philly open up the Linc on Thursday Night and pick one of DAL/NYG to go to Raymond James for MNF week 1? Don't get me wrong, this was an epic opener for TB, but everytime I watch this, you think raising a SB banner should have opened up their 2003 season. Of course, if the NFL schedule makers had made Philly go to Tampa, that's a different story. Not hating on the game, just getting my two cents out on the Bucs having to start on the road here.

Yall are acting like SB winners had to have a home game. Prior to this game, there were plenty of SB winning teams in the early mid 90s that played a road game in week 1 the next year as far as I can remember. They started the home game thing when they Thursday Night Football started the season. Only the Ravens after this game played a road game and that is because of the conflict with MLB and the Orioles.

They actually started it in 1997, using the first MNF game. The only exceptions were the Ravens (because as you noted, the Orioles were a conflict) and this game (because Lincoln Financial was a huge sponsor of MNF).

The Eagles losing that game at the vet showed me that home field advantage means nothing. Because that crowd was LIT after Mitchell ran back that opening kick off and the vet was literally shaking after Staley scored the first touchdown. And the Bucs won despite that. So if a team has a good game plan..they can go on the road and win anywhere. The whole home field advantage meant nothing to me after that. Because if a team can lose at home in front of a crowd like those fans were that day..they can lose any game at home at any time.
