With the LS around now, its crazy how much people sleep on the old 350. Especially the later 'Vortec' models, for less than a grand you can toss on an exhaust and change the cam, depending on the cam you can be making over 400ft lbs of torque.

Ditch the 403 it’s an Oldsmobile engine. Not a strong foundation to build power. If you want simple cheap power go 400 small block Chevy. Isky mega 292 cam, edelbrock rpm intake and heads 800 Holley. At least 450 hp and torque
