Hey so 9:1 on the compression is boosted numbers with some ring gapping and some cheap turbos and some piping you can build a down and dirty Chinese turbo kit for probably $1000 and a weekend of checking ring gap or don't at all. Then you've got a sturdy 600 hers pers to dump clutches and roast wheels maybe a angle kit and some suspension tuning you'll have a sweet track ready racer/ drift car.

Concise, on the spot, reasons "why we did this". Along with VGG and quite a few other channels the knowledge available is astounding. I'm not saying throw out the Chilton but man, if 1/2 of what is presented now was available back then that "caliper" might not have froze up on me. lol. These channels are keeping the car culture alive. WELL DONE Tony and crew for keeping the interest up, and for just the all around fun builds.

I hate to keep adding posts (but hey it feeds the algorithm), all gen4 oil pans use the newer metric thread for oil filters. The older gen3 use a slightly larger 13/16" SAE thread. Stone needs to ask for a 2010 Camaro 6.2L filter, or any 2007+ LS car/truck (besides 'classic' truck models).

I'm a diesel mechanic and work on a lot of the diesel Isuzus and these 6.0 Isuzu box trucks, they actually do rev to like 6k rpm but they just ecu detune them. Just like the International, etc big box trucks with the 6.7 Cummins, they just detune them. They haul a lot of weight and they detune them to not stress the motor. Again, the 6.0 LS, 6.7 Cummins, etc are identical to the regular truck motors (except misc accesories) just tuned differently Also side note, interestingly, the bigger Isuzu NTR with the straight 6 turbo diesel, is actually a Duramax straight 6. Been playing around the idea of putting it in a squarebody lmao

@adamcousins2459 Ай бұрын
@@davelowets I doubt if they have a hard rev limiter. Heavy truck engines are designed to be able to over-rev to the moon without damage, as this is sometimes necessary when descending a grade. For instance, the old ford 4.9 that was in every ups and usps truck, forklift, freight truck, water pump, generator, etc, would rev to 5-6k under no load conditions, but airflow and ignition timing was so poor that there was no torque available after 3500. I assume these engines are tuned to mimic the same operating parameters, by pulling timing and closing the throttle blade to limit torque. Just because an engine WILL rev to 6k doesn't mean there is any point in doing so, except during engine braking when descending a long grade fully loaded.

To clear up the head # questions: All the rec port castings are pretty much identical except the 5364, the exh port is a little different and tends to flow more when ported to the max (more meat). They used the same castings between LS3 (aka car) and truck/suv 6.0/6.2L engines. The differences: the springs, valves, and seat cuts. Truck springs have a little less max lift than LS3/LS6 but not much at all (0.550" with soft ramp cam). Solid valves for trucks. Less care given to truck castings for finishing the seat cuts (some have nasty overhang or deep cuts above the seat). The hollow/sodium valves are great for longevity when run hard, but overall weaker for high rpm. You'll notice >100k mile truck heads all have pitted exh valve seats. Just lap them & send it. GM did this with the 243 LS6 heads, using them interchangably on the 5.3L engines and identical to 799 castings. They just didn't use hollow valves or give perfect valve jobs on truck versions, just like the gen4 truck engines. In all cases (243 and rec-port), they all flow virtually the same as each other.

Did any of the vortec line of engines get the 821's?

I loved watching Tony with Lucky, back when MT on demand was still worth having. I really miss them on Hot Rod Garage, Fred and Dave (the dirt heads)on Dirt Everyday, Roadkill Garage with David and Steve, and obviously Roadkill with David and Mike. When they mess with that line up, they ruined it for me and I stopped paying. Anyway, it was cool watching Tony grow into being on camera on HRG. He was really reserved when he started, but he became “TAngelo” pretty quick, but who can resist Lucky. I’m glad that he’s who he is and is that guy with every one he’s around. But man oh man, that episode with his dad got me. Having restored my first car with my dad while I was 15 ( 74 Z28, I know most people hate the bumpers, but it’s what I could afford in 87’ ), then another project car at 17 (67 VW Type 1, laugh all you want, but with a 1835 engine, it was fun and was meant for stereo competitions anyway), I have a soft spot for fathers and sons working on cars together. I had planned on buying my mom and dad another 55 Chevy like my dad had before getting married and going to Vietnam. I was going to get another 427, like he had, build it, Muncie 4 spd, 3:73 posi, just like his was, and give it to them for their 40th anniversary. But lung cancer took him 3 years before they got there. So that stuff gets to me. I want to see more of his dad’s Camaro build myself. Anyway, love the show man, and the punk music. Keep it coming and we’ll keep watching!

Another note on bolts when re-assembling LS engines. If you re-use any bolt that lists a torque+angle method, you CANNOT use that same procedure if they're used. You'll overtighten them quite a bit since they're now pre-stretched. Matt Happel (and others) have figured out used head bolts can be set (dry) to 55-70lbs, used gen4 rod bolts to 51lbs, 65lbs for inner/13mm main bolts and 55lbs for outer/15mm main studs. That's for USED bolts, new should only get the torque+angle deal.

The industrial powerplants are rated at low RPM and are tuned for garbage fuel to run at full load at a constant speed. Another example is how Generac bought the rights for BBC architecture from GM and continued to make gen VI big blocks for generators, theyre rated at an absurdly low 150hp at 1800rpm on natural gas. Tony, after the struggle bus that was the sea of aftermarket junk for the C6, this was a fantastic turn of events and a real feel good episode. Being able to find a hidden treasure of a powerplant for cheap seems to be next to impossible these days, and felt very - well, there's no other way to put it - "old time hotroddy." I'm not even a C5 fan, but Snowcone has become one of those special project cars that's just fun to watch. I also greatly appreciated the ~20 minute format of the Tuesday special. Had great pacing to it too - sometimes, it pays to rip the cuts in the edit a bit harder too, and it worked a treat in that video. P.S.: Funny how a flood-damaged C6 turned out to be A-OK, but all the new parts for it turned out to el garbage-o ready-o.

You're on the right track when it comes to why the HP rating is so low. More often than not, industrial engines are rated HP@service RPM rather than peak HP. They're set up more for durability, reliability, and efficiency. It's this way because industrial engine users don't care about peak HP. They want to know what HP the engine efficiently generates at constant load, and with assurance it can do so for thousands of hours without needing major mechanical attention.

The stick does nothing if its not big enough to wedge against the body of the lifter. The lifter only protrudes into the oil galley slightly less than half way. The lobes certainly dont push the lifter up enough to get the stick under it. If that was the case you would have a huge internal oil leak.
@davelowets
@davelowets Ай бұрын
@@stevenbelue5496Yes, the stick DOES.... sometimes you have to turn the cam as you're putting the stick IN, so that the lobes that are in the way clear. I've done the stick thing with the engine in the chassis MANY times, and I CAN assure you that it works.
@stevenbelue5496
@stevenbelue5496 Ай бұрын
@davelowets the stick does what? The stick definately does not go under the lifter body. The only way it can hold the lifter is if its big enough and just the right size to wedge agaisnt the lifter body. Like i said if the lobe raised the lifter up high enough to get the stick under the lifter body, think about it, you would have a huge internal oil leak because that passage way your sliding the stick into is a pressurized oil galley and if the lobe raised the lifter high enough to get a stick under it you would have zero oil pressure because everytime a lobe hit max lift you would have a huge gapping oil leak internally.
@stevenbelue5496
@stevenbelue5496 Ай бұрын
@@davelowets so your saying with the lobe up you could slide a stick in there and make contact with the lobe? Lol, im guessing lobe lift would have to be well over an inch for that to happen which would be impossible cause the cam would not physically fit into the cam tunnel. Thats lobe lift so its not multiplied by 1.7 for valve lift which would be up near 2 inches which it wouldnt have the spring height for. From the cam tunnel to the oil passage(inside edge to inside edge) is probably 3/4" or more so you can kinda visualize how big the lobe would have to be to protrude into the oil galley. Im sorry im being sarcastic but i dont think you really looked at it, and maybe im wrong and im looking like an idiot but i dont think so.

The reason why GM has always been able to make dirt-cheap power from LS engines is because they are THE original universal engine. Before BMW and Toyota's straight sixes, before 500cc per cylinder became standard, before big block engines were a thing, GM had the small block V8. Many industrial truck engines eventually had LS3 heads (or a variant of them) - that's how GM was able to keep the reliability of the engine at that rated RPM and power level while spreading the engineering costs of higher performance over multiple applications. They make such stupid amounts of torque down low that with the right gearing, they're incredibly efficient. The Corvette, from the C5 through the C7, got 25-30mpg at 70mph in top gear and still made 400+ lb-ft of torque. Use an iron block instead and you have an EXTREMELY high duty cycle application.

0821 heads should be a rec port but not all of them came with the hollow valves. They used them on L76 6.0's in the G8 and I think GXP as well, but both with an aluminum block. If it's an iron block 6.0 it wouldn't make sense to run those heads as they give up low end to cathedral ports. Likely some mashup of Pontiac or GM selling whatever they had to "industrial" customers. They used them in generators as well. They state the HP low because I'm sure the trucks got whatever GM had to offer and better to understate and overperform since those types of trucks aren't advertised as 300+ HP.
