The fantastic FE 427 ... Super fast at the drags, a dominator at NASCAR and with the help of Shelby, the FE 427 won Lemans twice... 1966 and 1967. It was so fast at Lemans, the Frenchies banned it !!

when I was a kid a guy on our street had a 63 427 galaxie it was bad ass. he use to tune it on fri nite and my mom use to bitch kos of the noise. open headers duel quad it was burgundy in color and it looked so fine

Yup, saw my first one run in mid-sixties, as a high school (GHS) kid, or just after graduation, in L. A. area, at Fontana, Pomona, or Irwindale, maybe Lions (Long Beach area), can't remember; we (friends) were at the drags all the time we could get away. Anyway, back then we used to say: "Man!! It Goes like a Raped Ape"!! LOL ;D

Moved up to '63 1/2 fastback galaxie(390 w/2-4's 4spd 427 cam/lifters),66 GTA Fairlane,67 Cyclone(390 4spd). When he passed he had a '67 F100 swb w/ roller 302/4spd/3.50 Trac-loc rear that he willed to me. There's not enuff money made to buy it from me. It was his pride & joy...now its mine as well

Remember watching Tasca Ford running there Thunderbolt in SS and later in FX class at Connecticut Dragway. The FX version would run 10.5-10.8 et's. The SS version was like in the 11's somewhere. I think they were limited to certain class rules back then. This car here doing low nines is impressive. Probably could go quicker if it had a good wheelie bar system to put some of that torque on the track better. I presume it has more cubic inches than the original 427cu in. Amongst other engine mods to run low nines. Nice car tho. Good job.

So much so that chevy ,dodge and chrysler went to the NHRA to have them banned , then chevy turns around and copies the 427 design claining their L series were a entirely new motor. YEAH RIGHT. The finest complement chevy ever gave Ford was to try stealing their engine design, even then the L series were not the beasts the 427 fords were.

I saw these Thunderbolts run at Atco Dragway in NJ in 1964 and 1965. A really strong one would run in the high 10's , like Al Joniec's from Al Swenson Ford, The altered wheelbase(funny) Dodge and Plymouth Hemi Belvedere and Coronets would run low to mid 10's , Why is this T-Bolt 1 1/2 seconds faster than back then ??? Fuel or Tires or something else like more than 427 CI ?

Fun car. Is it original? I thought the Tbolts were all 4 speeds or am I wrong? I race a 351w '60 Falcon. I love old Fords. I have a nice 64 Cycone as well. I hope to get my Falcon into the 11s next spring. There's a lot more to going fast than horsepower.

52 of them were 4 speed manual transmissions, and 48 were automatics. And they came in only 2 colors: 89 were "Wimbledon White" and only 11 were Burgundy. Of course the paint color had nothing to do with whether the car had a 4-sp or auto trans.

You are correct. The correct numbers are 49 4 Speeds & 51 auto's. I just don't remember the auto's. Also, the two colors that were available were wimbledon white & burgundy.

I'm sure that since the times are about a second quicker than when the T-Bolts came out, this car may have some different rules governing the engine preparation. Now, the T-Bolts (check out Ray Pacquet) are running in SS/A. Ray has the current record set 10/16 at 8.53 at 155mph. Go to Bang Shift.com & check out Ray Pacquet.

For insurance regulation reasons, it was rated at +500, but in reality it was able to make well over +600 horsepower. The result of the awesome "high rise" 427 engine and the dual barrel Holley Carburetors. ;-)

Wrong. Due to pesky insurance rates, Ford actually rated the 427 side oiler Ford Thunderbolt at only 425 hp. Which was bullshit of course. They did indeed make north of 600 hp.

Phil retired the car from track duty 7 or 8 years ago. He said he put the car on the wrong two wheels and almost wiped it out.

That sounds correct. The first 5, or so, had cloverleaf hoods, instead of the teardrop. Some had fiberglass front bumpers, than the NHRA made them switch to aluminum. I wish I had one.

Reminds me, back in the day we kids used to get a bit dizzy being at the drags all day, 'cause of the Extreeeeeeem sounds and smoke, but we loved it and kept going back for more (in the 60's) at places like Irwindale, Fontana, Lions, and Pomona!! It's Sacramento, CA. Says on one scene by the concrete side barrier. Also you can tell by the dry grass and digger pine trees!! LOL. I used to live and work in that town, years ago. Never went to the drags there though.
