Because this was Arnold's first comedy, Universal was afraid the movie would bomb, so both he and Danny DeVito agreed to waive their salaries and take 20% of the movie's gross box office. But the movie was an unexpected hit. This resulted in both of them earning more money from TWINS than any other movie in their careers. It's rumored that Universal actually lost money on it because of this deal.

Yeah Danny and Arny both took 20% cuts, the director took a 5% cut, and it was of the movies gross box office, not net profit. The movie made an incredibly $216 million total with only an $18 million dollar budget. Usually movies end up taking in roughly 60% of the gross as profit once the theatres take their cut. Lets say they got 60%. Around 129 million. Arnold and Danny each pocket 43 mill, the director takes home 11 million. Budget was 18 million. Which doesn't include the cost of PR and Marketing, say another 5 million in those days. The studio probably made like 5-10 million tops, if that. Imagine having one of the Top 5 highest grossing hit movies of the year... and you make less on it than the director does. Hahaha! There's a reason why no studio EVER gave out a deal like this again. They will sometimes give backend points to massive movie stars today, but never anything over 5%, and NEVER on the movies gross, only on net profits. Also to even get backend points you have to be like 2 or 3 movies into a big franchise usually.

The movie, 'Twins', which was originally called 'The Experiment', was developed specifically for me. Because when I met Ivan Reitman, I said to him, "I want you to direct me, I want to get into comedy. No one will hire me for comedy, because everyone is making a lot of money from me, with action movies, so it's very hard for me to cross over because people don't want to take the risk." So he said, "I think that you're very funny, and I think that we should develop some stuff for you." So he developed five scripts, and one of them was 'The Experiment.' I fell in love with the idea, and then we changed it to 'Twins' and came up with the idea to have Danny DeVito play not only someone that behaves opposite of me but also looks totally the opposite. I thought that it was very, very funny because all he had to do was kind of show the poster of Danny leaning against me and saying, "Only their mother can tell them apart." I mean, it made everyone laugh. So it was hugely successful, it was unbelievable. And I was so happy because it was actually my first movie that made domestically over $100 million, and it was a comedy, not an action movie. So from then on, of course, I got offered a lot of action movies, but Danny and I, we rehearsed those scenes, but we just had so much fun on the set rehearsing those scenes and doing all those same things and having the same mannerisms, and the scratching our butts at the same time and doing all this kind of stuff. So I think it was great, and it was brilliantly written. - Arnold Schwarzenegger (from The Terminator (1984), Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991), Predator (1987), Batman & Robin (1997), Pumping Iron (1977), Conan the Barbarian (1982), Kindergarten Cop (1990), Jingle All the Way (1996), Total Recall (1990), True Lies (1994) and Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)), who played Julius Benedict in Twins (1988).

About Arnold giving film roles to fellow friends/bodybuilders- Arnold's lifetime friend was Franco Columbu (who passed away in 2019). He and Arnold moved to the United States at the same time in the mid 1960s and lived together before both becoming World champion bodybuilders. When Arnold became a movie star, he gave small roles to his best friend. Franco was the tattooed Warrior Scout during the opening battle in Conan the Barbarian, the "Future Terminator" in Kyle Reese's flashback in The Terminator, was one of the medics on the chopper at the end of Predator, and is briefly seen as one of the studio technicians in The Running Man (when Arnold is being prepped for the show, Franco is the guy who says "Your bird is singing loud and clear."). There is a nod to him in Last Action Hero but I won't give it away as you haven't reacted to it yet.

If you two like Danny Devito; these are some of my favorites: The Ratings Game - 1984( co-starring with ex-wife Rhea Perlman ) Ruthless People - 1986( co-starring Bette Midler ) He produced a serious film you might find interesting as well: Gattaca - 1997( starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman ) I'm glad you guys liked the movie and remembered who Kelly Preston was 😢. She'll be missed. Thanks for the video and great reactions. 😀

I got a couple Danny Devito movies Romancing the Stone 1984 and its sequel Jewel of the Nile 1985 both real fun Adventure movies that also starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner

"You're all swolled up! You look like you're about to expalode!" There's a lot of cheese in this, but Devito is always gold.

Such a cute movie. I have great memories of watching this as a kid, and from what I can see it still holds up. If you haven't seen it, I would love to see a reaction to Dark City (director's cut). Fantastic sci-fi film.

I’m such a huge Arnie fan. This is one of my favourite movies of his. Interesting nerdy trivia: Arnie wears the same watch in a lot of his 80’s movies such as Predator, Raw Deal, Commando and this movie! When I found this out I had to buy it. Wearing it right now!

So glad you two got into this, I was watching your vid with a full on smile the whole time. The director, Ivan Reitman, was on a serious roll with this addition to his already stellar portfolio, so many of which are personal faves and are worth your time checking out (Meatballs, Stripes, Legal Eagles, and obviously Ghostbusters). The matching wardrobe scene reminded me of Rain Man, another worthy addition to your list :) p.s. Kelly Preston is great in Jerry McGuire as well.

At 23:16 it's not Universal, this film was shot on location in Santa Fe. As seen at 19:42, that's looking east down San Francisco St from the Plaza, with St. Francis Cathedral in the background. (Although it always kinda bugged me that someone would go through the trouble of shooting in beautiful Santa Fe, and then not use any wide shots...)

You should react to the old "Taxi" series, where Danny Devitto's star was born!
@randall-king3 жыл бұрын
He was so good in that! Here’s a classic Taxi scene, though DeVito isn’t in it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWrOYWltnciaj7s

I love this movie. It’s one of the best Arnold comedies next to kindergarten cop.

Webster, the movie's villain, is played by Marshall Bell and he was Kuato in Total Recall.

The guy you pointed out from The Running Man is Sven Ole Thorsen, Arnold’s life long friend. He’s in a whole bunch of not only Arnold’s films, but classics like Gladiator and Lethal Weapon

Twins is a great movie; I do not understand why it is so ignored these days.

Fun movie. Interesting continuity screwup during the bathroom scene at 21:02. The beer bottle is on top of the left paper towel dispenser and when the camera cuts back it's on the right paper towel dispenser.

FYI the guy who ends up getting the chains on him at the end was the human host of Quato from Total Recall and he was the leader of that base on the alien planet in Starship Troopers. and the guy who played Tony in Total Recall in the bar is also an officer at the base when Rico was still in training but it best known as Hank in Breaking Bad.

Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😉 Im glad you enjoyed it as much as I did! There is even a sequel in the works, titled Triplets, it will star Eddie Murphy as a successful movie producer, whom is also Arnold and Danny's Long Lost Brother! 🤣

The sequel was originally planned for the early 2000s, but the project was put on indefinite hold when Arnie decided to run for governor of California. Never say never though, because Arnie will always be back!
@wiredtardis3 жыл бұрын
It's funny that you never caught the whole dynamic between the brothers and the sisters where the good brother/sister is attracted to the naughty one. Hence, Linda went for Angel cake and Marnie wanted Devil's cake. As for Arnie's "I'll be back" catchphrase, Predator and Total Recall do not have that line anywhere throughout their entire durations, but both films are still full of great one-liners regardless that they don't really need it.
@JAYWALKER10003 жыл бұрын
Something just clicked when you said Arnold's friends show up in his movies. Remember Blaine Cooper - the "I ain't got time to bleed." guy - in Predator and Captain Freedom in Running Man? That's Jesse "the Body" Ventura - a member of The U.S. Navy Underwater Demolition Team (during Vietnam), a WWF/WWE wrestler and former governor of Minnesota. He's also in Batman & Robin (where Arnold plays Mr. Freeze). So all three movies have two governors in them.
@McPh17413 жыл бұрын
The woman who played Linda was in a movie called Heart Condition with Denzel Washington and Bob Hoskins. It’s a comedy with a more serious tone like Twins. I highly recommend it.

As many have mentioned, Kindergarten Cop is great, reuniting Arnold with Twins director Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters), but I can't say I recommend Junior, which also brought back Danny DeVito -- it's by far the weakest of the three collaborations. For awhile, Arnold was talking up a sequel to Twins called Triplets, in which he and DeVito find out about a third brother played by Eddie Murphy, but I have to say I'm pretty skeptical that that will actually happen.

Kelly Preston is John Travolta's wife and she was in Maroon 5's music video "She will be loved". She was also in my favourite romcom; Secret admirer. The guy who played Webster was in Total Recall too
@chrismeulen81083 жыл бұрын
and yeah, the other Arnold + Danny movie, is "Junior" from 1994, which stars a pregnant Arnold..... just the idea alone, is already hilarious enough.

Matching Arnold's physique is hard, so many of the same guys show up in various movies; Sven-Ole Thorsen is a Danish actor that had his break in the first Conan, also apearing in the second film in a smaller roll, and even apeared in Gladiator (the Gaul gladiator with the tigers). He might have been Arnold's missing brother in The Running Man, who went through re-education but kept his memory!
@PickleBread3553 жыл бұрын
Also the guy from running man is Sven-Ole Thorsen. He's in almost every Arnold Movie. They knew each other from the body building world
