Great movie. I love how Philip Seymour Hoffman manages to avoid being typecast. He can be a stoner adrenaline junkie (Twister), a toadie (here in Tye Big Lebowski), or a suspect priest (Doubt), and he just 100% delivers and embodies the part. My favourite role of his is as Andy in Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead. That was an incredible performance in a sea of incredible performances in an incredible movie. If you guys haven’t seen that one, do yourselves a favour. You won’t regret it.

One of my favorite little fun facts about this movie is that Steve Buscemi was in the Coen Brothers' previous movie, Fargo, and he played a character who was basically an impulsive talker... so when Buscemi returned for this role, the Coens decided he should play a character who constantly gets told to "shut the fuck up".

When I was in the Marines in 2001, I was stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii with the 3rd Marines and we had a Hispanic NCO that was tall, skinny and his last name was DeJesus. The Big Lebowski was a popular movie in our barracks and when Sgt. DeJesus was bitching someone out for whatever reason, you'd hear "Nobody fucks with Da Jesus" from people in the formation. He hated this movie...

One great detail that becomes more apparent on repeat viewings is the way The Dude adopts phrases and speech patterns from the people he meets in the movie (“This aggression will not stand,” “The Dude abides,” “in the parlance of our times,” etc). Another great similar touch is when Walter corrects him for saying “Chinaman,” then a scene later the Dude visibly reacts when the Big Lebowski uses that word.

This movie is best enjoyed when you realize that the plot means nothing, as it ultimately resolves itself regardless of what The Dude does. The Big Lebowski is all about the funny collection of weird and quirky characters. Also, a lot of the characters are based upon actual people the Coens knew in real life.

Totally agree. This a movie that gets funnier each time I watch it. Eminently quotable. I love how it just does one big giant circle back to the start with nothing much having really happened- no kidnapping, no stolen money. It's about the journey, not the destination and the journey is about all the unique characters and how they interact. Fun flick!

"His car can't get much worse." - Just wait. . . The Dude is one of the most passive protagonists I've ever seen. Stuff just happens to him. He gets buffeted from one situation to another by forces outside his control. Walter, The Big Lebowski, Maud, Jackie Treehorn, all contribute to the chaos, while The Dude is at the center of it all. His passivity is almost a weapon in itself. Did you notice that at one point The Dude made a White Russian using non-dairy creamer?

Jeff Bridges played this part to perfection. The oafish slacker living in a haze of pot and white Russians, that the times have left behind. Whalesong music was big in the 80's yuppie culture. It's like he is in Patrick Bateman's universe, but at the opposite coast, in a very different lifestyle. The dude is the greatest character in a movie ever. I watch this movie once a year at least. You will notice new things every time.

Very few comedies are as consistently hilarious as this. I can't understand how Joel and Ethan Coen can write damn near anything. Comedies (Raising Arizona, The Ladykillers, O Brother, Where Art Thou?), existential dramas (Barton Fink, Inside Llewyn Davis), gangster flicks (Miller's Crossing) crime films (Blood Simple, Fargo, No Country for Old Men, hell, it's most of their filmography anyway), Westerns (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, True Grit)... Their writing genius and almost supernatural command of the cinematic medium is what makes the Coen Brothers so damn special.

the term dude comes from the 1800's, referring to a guy, typically, who was fashionable, or fancy. nowadays its basically just a slang greeting for anyone, but some places its still considered an insult lol.

The connotation in the 1800s also meant a city-slicker, somebody utterly at a loss when placed on a cattle ranch, for instance. A dude ranch was essentially a place to teach urbanites how to ride, rope, and punch cattle due to the intense popularity of cowboys in the first half of the 20th century.

Definitely check out another Coen Brothers classic “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” It’s a loose retelling of “The Odyssey”, set in the Depression-era South starring George Clooney (with several usual Coen Brothers contributors, like John Turturro and John Goodman). It’s not as laugh out loud funny as this, but it’s a really fun movie with a similar case of main characters wandering through a plot encountering a bunch of bizarre characters. Also, not sure if you two recognized him (since you didn’t mention him like most of the notable supporting actors & cameos), but Maude’s weird, giggling friend is played by David Thewlis, who plays Lupin in Harry Potter.

John Goodman's character was fashioned after the look and persona of screenwriter and director John Milius, who wrote and directed Conan the Barbarian, and wrote the screenplays for Apocalypse Now, Jeremiah Johnson, Dirty Harry and Magnum Force, and Red Dawn.

Watch it again and pay attention to the facial expressions. Brandt in the car is amazing for example. Maude's actual indignation towards the porn movie because "the story is ludicrous" will not stop being funny to me. Her speech cadence is also incredible. What a film. Saw Lebowski almost by accident, when it was first in theaters. We went to see another film, but it was sold out. We had movie passes which had to be used by the end of that particular weekend, and so we chose this as the replacement, and what a great choice. It has become iconic over the years and gets better after two or three viewings. Number 8 on my top 100 movie list and my top-rated comedy. The word great doesn't do it justice. Coen brothers are geniuses. I'm so happy you two watched this one. Keep up the great work.

Every reaction i've seen of this movie where there's a woman watching, they always get the most quizzical "What is that woman doing?" look on their faces when Maude is nonchalantly doing her conception exercises. I wasn't disappointed this time either lol. Love the channel!

I’m sure others must have mentioned this but if not, the complex plot (and even the name) is based on the complex plots of Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe stories, especially The Big Sleep (which was adapted into a movie by Howard Hawks and starring Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall in 1946).

Speaking Honestly about my favourite movie here. The first time I watched it, it was confusing and certainly wierd. But every time I watched it after that, I picked up something I missed the time before. Such a good cult film. Went to a Big Lebowski one-off screening years ago, so good to see that the film still has a strong following.

In the original script Walter never went to 'nam. He was a gun nut who tried to go but was rejected for medical reasons.

One of my favorite things about this movie is to think back on the Larry Sellers scene, from Larry's perspective, now knowing what you know. Given that there was no money, consider what Larry has to be thinking as two guys come into your house, wave your homework in your face, scream at you that they want the money back, and then one of them goes outside and proceeds to destroy your neighbor's car. Oh, and it wasn't necessarily the fight that caused Donnie's heart attack. If you watch him after he misses his strike, he's shaking and rubbing his arm, like it's numb, which is of course a sign of a heart attack.

You two need to check out some other Coen Brothers movies. most of them are enjoyable. I believe you watched Fargo so I won't recommend that but I would suggest Raising Arizona and O Brother Where Art Thou, both also feature Mr Goodman, and I'd also recommend The Hudsucker Proxy, Blood Simple and Barton Fink.

You forgot 'No Country for Old Men', my personal favorite film of all time and a master class in filmmaking. Everything else you mentioned is great (well, 'The Hudsucker Proxy' was just okay, as I remember), and 'Miller's Crossing' is also great. John Goodman is great in 'Barton Fink', too.

Another awesome little tidbit is that I’m pretty sure every quotable thing the dude says throughout the movie he heard in a previous scene from someone else. Watch it again and you’ll notice it. One of the million genius little things about this movie.

Great reaction dudes! A few snippets of information: - You never see the Dude actually bowling. When this is shown on TV there’s a ton of overdubs to remove the cussing. For example, when Walter loses his temper at Larry he shouts “This is what happens when you find a stranger in the alps!”. The three main characters resemble a family, with Walter as the father, the Dude as the wife and Donnie as the kid.

Walter's character was based in part on John Milius, the mad genius who wrote Apocalypse Now and wrote and directed Conan the Barbarian and Red Dawn. This movie gets better and better with repeated viewings. My wife's all time favorite movie and my favorite comedy.
