So for some background, Simon Pegg & Nick Frost started out with Edgar Wright as a director back in a series called *Spaced* and Edgar Wright's stuff is absolutely JAM-PACKED with little references. There's a whole version of the show, where there are subtitles just to call out what the references are. This is why his work in *Scott Pilgrim* is just as heavily full of those things in every single scene. When it comes to the cornetto trilogy though, they all go way back, and there's a sort of family-like familiarity between them on their projects where they have a very particular flow that is just... it's why they are what they are.

The thing about the Cornetto Trilogy is that the comedy remains consistently amazing, the quality of the filmmaking goes up throughout (which is amazing considering you're starting from "Shaun of the Dead"), and the writing gets more sophisticated with each iteration, going from a zombie comedy with some social commentary and great character arcs, to a biting commentary on social contract theory, to an exploration of existential philosophy... all hidden in some of the most entertaining movies ever made.

There’s even more brilliance in the Shaun of the Dead script. Adding to what you mentioned about making the plans... the plan Nick says in the bar ends up describing the entire movie. Have a Bloody Mary in the morning = Zombie named Mary in their garden Have a couple at the at the princesses = they pick up the bickering couple with shaun’s gf(Princess) A bite at the Kings head. = they pick up Shaun’s parents where his step dad is bitten at his neck/head Then bam! Stagger back for shots at the bar The group pretend to be zombies as they stagger back into the Winchester bar where it all ends with them taking shots...at the zombies with the Winchester Also when shooting said zombies, the dialogue and camera work directly mirrors the dialogue and video game camera work of the zombie game they are playing in the beginning of the movie

The ending of The World's End was a huge change from the rest of the movie but it's definitely worth the watch. You can't say it has a happy ending like Hot Fuzz but it sure is different.

The NW man who dies at the end is Edward Woodwood, famous for being in the British Cult Horror film The Wicker Man with Christopher Lee. His final words in that film was "OH GOD NO!" hence the same in this film, also it was his final acting role. That film also had a creepy village, headed by a cult. Loved Dalton in this, a good self-aware villian, there's another Bond actor in At World's End, will you spot him? I like the twist on archetypes and cliches this wrighter and director do; Skinner had a twirly-mustash and Fank had that (lovely victorian era policeman's) Cape, that a classic villian would wear. Oh, and Michael was the Hound from GOT!

Only at the beginning and ALREADY so excited! This is my favorite of the Cornetto Trilogy, and IMO by FAAAAAR the best of the three. Watched it dozens of times and am STILL finding little references and Easter eggs and foreshadowings. Talk about good writing and editing, this ones got it in spades!!!

For reference "The Fuzz" is old British slang for the police. Like calling them pigs but meant somewhat less offensively.
@GamesandNonsenseUnleashed3 жыл бұрын
Actually, linguists know for certain is that "fuzz" was first used to refer to policemen by criminals in the United States during the late 1920s and early 1930s.

There's a 1972 Burt Reynolds/Rachel Welch picture called 'Fuzz' about police in Boston. So it was still current in the US then. Guess it went out of style more recently.

You kind of touched on it a bit, but this movie is a parody of "buddy cop" movies like Lethal Weapon, Bad Boys, and Point Break. Another good modern, American parody of the genre is The Other Guys with Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell. Hot Fuzz is absolutely my favorite of this trilogy.

Woop! Cornetto Trilogy continues. The winning duo of Pegg and Frost with the cream of British actors, get in (as some of us still say).
@blacksheep_edge14123 жыл бұрын
Hot Fuzz definitely my favorite of the Cornetto Trilogy. So deep in the use of dialogue early on to set up the jokes, and plot payoffs late in the film. Also the use of music was excellent yet again. Especially note the lyrics of the song that plays as Tim Dalton drives by the house that blew up. The first word we hear is "Fire." Such a wonderful detail. And, as Natalie pointed out, the editing and cuts are masterfully done as well. The snappy back and forth at just the right exact moments. Love this film. The World's End was a good movie, but I found it rather depressing. *no spoilers* but I empathized with Simon Pegg's character so much that it really hit me hard. And still does on rewatches. Another movie that is seriously good, yet also seriously depressing, is Robin Williams in One Hour Photo. Or Dead Poet's Society. Or Moscow on the Hudson. Robin Williams was totally underrated as a dramatic actor.

Yesssss this is one of my all-time favorite films. The humor is so witty; the action, pacing, and editing is absolutely perfect; there’s so much foreshadowing; and it crosses so many genres from action to mystery to comedy to thriller! Plus the characters are all so fleshed out and real, and I love the character development and the focus on the platonic relationship. One of my other favorite films that’s kind of on the other end of the spectrum, but still has that fast pacing where every moment has something important or interesting, is called Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day. I highly recommend it even if you don’t do a reaction video.

Another comedy recommendation, and my personal favourite movie of all time, is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I believe it's Robert Downey Jr's first leading role after his last drug drama but before Iron Man. Him and Val Kilmer have a great dynamic with a lot of very fast intelligent and quick witted dialogue, the writing for the movie is great and it's just a fun spin on a modern LA detective movie.

When I watched this, the town of Sandford reminded me of the little town of Wells, in Somerset, which I visited on my only ever trip overseas.... turns out that's where the movie was filmed! It's well named, as there are caves and springs all over Somerset, including an artesian well in the centre of the town that keeps the gutters clean and flowing with crystal clear water. Nearby is the River Axe, which flows out of Wookey Hole Cave, where my caving partner's father did cave diving in the 1950s. If I ever re-visit to England, I'm going to have to head out that way again.

If you’re ever in England you should go to the village of Wells, which is where they filmed it. If you go into the pub you’ll see production photos on the wall and the body armour that Simon Pegg wore during the film. The street, the graveyard, the alley, the shop, it’s all in Wells. Besides all that, it’s a lovely old English town.
