iirc, he was the actual main antagonist in the second film (the actor, not the character). They already made and trained the final fight, I've seen the footage on youtube. But apparently they don't have enough budget to make the movie after all, so they decided to create a much cheaper 'promotional video' to raise budget, and the promo was the movie you just watched. The Mad Dog actor had to portray the villain here, and would be weird if he returned as another character in the actual movie, so they recasted the villain role. And as you said, Mad Dog popularity unpredictably went through the roof, so they created a new character for him to return.

There's an interesting story of how the movie came to be in the first place: Gareth Evans, a director and cameraman from UK traveled to Indonesia to film documentaries, but he was so fascinated with Iko Uwais' martial skills that he decided to make a full-length movie. I'm so happy they managed to do it. Pardon my English, I'm not a native speaker.

Gareth married an Indonesian after meeting her at university. There was no opportunity to make action movies in Wales so they moved to Indonesia where he met the gang. Iko Uwais (Rama) and Andi are both in his first film Merantau which is a very slow and meditative film compared to this one. They also both appeared in The Force Awakens on Han & Chewie's salvager.

I remember when this movie came out. Almost immediately, bootlegs were being passed around by fans like it was the hot new drug everybody had to try. The Raid had such a massive impact on action filmmakers that we definitely wouldn't have John Wick or *its* imitators without this movie. In fact, Yayan Ruhian (who plays Mad Dog here) and Cecep Arif Rahman (from The Raid 2) both cameo in JW3 to give Keanu the business.

If you enjoy the action sequences and fight choreography in this film, Raid 2 turns it up to 11. The budget for this movie was only about $1,000,000 and the story that was originally planned had to be rewritten and actually ended up as part of Raid 2 due to the budget constraints for this movie.

When this hit the states in springtime of 2012, done deal. One of the most influential action films ever. Following the buzz and it's debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. This was the next new phenomenon and we wanted more. Very few theaters had it. But the DVD, On demand markets made sure it was available for major viewing. In those days of the 2010s, Guerilla filmmaking at it's finest. Iko Uwais and others physical dynamos involved with this are still the future of action.

I have never heard a cinema audience make as much noise as they did through this masterpiece. Director Gareth Evans is Welsh. The sequel is even more brilliant, I'd call it the Godfather of all action movies. He uses camera angles and camera movements in fight choreography that nobody has thought of. Evans also did Apostle which is mind blowing and a TV series called Gangs of London which is as hard hitting as this. He also did a short horror movie on the anthogy movie V/H/S/ 2. One of my fave directors.

You'll never hear the end of it if you don't watch The Raid 2, it's just as awesome, picks up right after the first one. in fact there's a deleted scene for it called 'Gang War' on KZbin that contains no main cast or spoilers so can be watched as a teaser, and you'll think 'holy fuck, if this is what got cut out what got left in' haha. Also there's another movie that preceded The Raid films called 'Merantau' by the same director if you want more Iko Uwais ass kickery action. The Raid stars also got used in many other movies and shows following these, they were Kanjiklub in The Force Awakens right out the gate. I saw this at the cinema when it first came out. The buzz in the auditorium was amazing and when the mad dog vs the brothers fight ended everyone was clapping and cheering. It was like we had been collectively holding our breath. Oh and totally agree about the fridge scene, beautiful.

Of course, you MUST watch "The Raid 2: Berandal" (2014) but I also recommend "The Night Comes For Us" (2018) starring Joe Taslim (who played Jaka in "The Raid") as the main protagonist, Iko Uwais (who played Rama in "The Raid"), and Julie Estelle (who will make a big impression on you in "The Raid 2").

I love this movie. The action scenes are so fluid. The little guy with the long hair was the fight coordinator for this and its sequel. Also, the main group of actors in this movie also show up as the raiders in Star Wars Episode 7 who board the Millennium Falcon looking for Han with those weird octopus things. Lastly, this movie gets credited for being the inspiration for “Dredd,” since that movie, while awesome, is pretty much a carbon copy of “The Raid.”

I don't know why, 'Dredd' was written in 2007/2008 and filmed in 2010, just unfortunate timing of being released after The Raid.

I'm sure it's been mentioned 100 times already, but the second film has even better fight choregraphy and camerawork.

Now you need to finish the story, with the movie that director Gareth Evans really wanted to make. "The Raid 2" is a masterpiece of action and direction.

I went to see this in theaters with a couple friends when it came out. We were the only ones in the theater, but it was one of the best theatrical experiences of my life. By the end of the climactic fight we were screaming from excitement

After Mad Dog died there was a collective sense of exhaustion/relief in the theater I was watching the movie in. But as the main character and his brother are about to walk out the room someone in the theater casually said "Get up!" and the whole theater erupted into laughter.

Also, I've seen a lot of comments about the production of this and mentions of the second movie. Another fun fact is that the second movie was actually the first script written, and it was never intended to be a sequel. It was just a standalone crime epic, but the scale of it was too big for people to trust an unproven director with, so Gareth Evans made some slight tweaks, created this barebone setup story to show what he was capable of, and the rest is history. I'm in the minority in that I probably prefer this one over the sequel, but they're both very close and very excellent for me. I'm just a sucker for single location, continuous time movies. And Mad Dog.

You have to wonder how many serious injuries there were in making this film. None of it looks safe at all.

So the guy who plays Mad Dog is a well renowned stunt/fight choreographer in Indonesia, but is also a highly skilled Silat(this type of martial arts) instructor. Also, served on government security, or at least trained them
