iirc, he was the actual main antagonist in the second film (the actor, not the character). They already made and trained the final fight, I've seen the footage on youtube. But apparently they don't have enough budget to make the movie after all, so they decided to create a much cheaper 'promotional video' to raise budget, and the promo was the movie you just watched. The Mad Dog actor had to portray the villain here, and would be weird if he returned as another character in the actual movie, so they recasted the villain role. And as you said, Mad Dog popularity unpredictably went through the roof, so they created a new character for him to return.

There's an interesting story of how the movie came to be in the first place: Gareth Evans, a director and cameraman from UK traveled to Indonesia to film documentaries, but he was so fascinated with Iko Uwais' martial skills that he decided to make a full-length movie. I'm so happy they managed to do it. Pardon my English, I'm not a native speaker.

I disagree. Your English is so good I wouldn’t have known if you hadn’t stated otherwise.

Gareth married an Indonesian after meeting her at university. There was no opportunity to make action movies in Wales so they moved to Indonesia where he met the gang. Iko Uwais (Rama) and Andi are both in his first film Merantau which is a very slow and meditative film compared to this one. They also both appeared in The Force Awakens on Han & Chewie's salvager.

The sequel is even more brilliant, I'd call it the Godfather of all action movies. He uses camera angles and camera movements in fight choreography that nobody has thought of. Also, I've seen a lot of comments about the production of this and mentions of the second movie. Another fun fact is that the second movie was actually the first script written, and it was never intended to be a sequel. It was just a standalone crime epic, but the scale of it was too big for people to trust an unproven director with, so Gareth Evans made some slight tweaks, created this barebone setup story to show what he was capable of, and the rest is history. I'm in the minority in that I probably prefer this one over the sequel, but they're both very close and very excellent for me. I'm just a sucker for single location, continuous time movies. And Mad Dog.
