Part 3: • TC Carson on Getting F...
Part 1: • TC Carson Growing Up i...
--------
In this clip, T.C. Carson went in depth about the rise and fall of 'Living Single.' He described what seemed to be a pleasant work environment early on but said things changed after new producers were appointed to oversee the show. T.C. detailed being the spokesperson for the cast to air their grievances to the writers and producers about the development and trajectory of their characters. However, that ultimately adversely impacted T.C. who became the scapegoat and was subsequently written off the show and dubbed as "difficult to work with."
Later, T.C. talked about 'Friends' essentially being a rip-off of 'Living Single' and the racial politics that were at play which ultimately amplified 'Friends' without acknowledging how it hijacked the 'Living Single' model.

@@geewhite2241 "only the minority because anyone with fair or pale skin is considered white even if their are from Asia like Russian(or any country of the ok’d USSR) and even Latinos of the same skin tone." Yeah. That's. What. White. Means. Although for the record it's not remotely true that whites are only a majority/plurality in the US due to inclusion of Slavic and Hispanic people, and even if it were those people still wouldn't be terribly interested in watching black sitcoms so your point is irrelevant. "This country had 100 of millions that were people of color way before Columbus." Bruh do you know how many people total lived in the United States at the time of its founding? About three million. The United States itself would not reach 100 million people until 1915. There were not hundreds of millions of indiginous Americans in present-day US before Columbus. Scholars estimate 60 million tops for both American continents.

Percentage of the population is a huge factor on what tier you are. I do not think there has ever been an asian head coach in the NFL. One white actor said that in china or hong kong that white actors lower tier parts and the asian actors are the heroes. The movie Everything Everywhere All at Once making it an asian family was risky compared to making the cast white. The creators decided to risk it anyway but they knew that could cost them money. " White Americans constitute the majority of the 332 million people living in the United States, with 71% of the population in the 2020 United States Census, including 61.6% who identified as 'white alone. Going to school in Manhattan and living in South Jamaica. Didn't have much money so Thursday nights were either pizza or Chinese food, Martin, Living Single and NY Undercover, the news then bed to get up at 7am for school. Back when Biggie and Pac was way past HOT! I really can't even watch those shows or listen to those songs. I'll get nostalgic and depressed! We were 22, 23 back then now we are almost 50! The cast made $75,000 per episode in 1997, the same year Living Single was cancelled. Friends also broke records through its entirety, on the biggest channel, in the prime time slot, through the decade where TV revolutionized pop culture. Friends started in ‘94, had its biggest show ever in ‘96 with 53 million viewers, and its finale in ‘04 (10 years later) had 52 million live viewers. Living Single was on FOX, who was an up and coming newer TV station at the time, and didn’t have a TV hit to break into the top 30 until The X-Files in ‘97. Before then, all the biggest shows were on ABC, CBS, or NBC. Yes, WB clearly made Friends after seeing the reception of Living Single, but to create a show for a different demographic. Both shows aired in the same prime time slots, at the same time, competing against each other on different channels, and yet Living Single didn’t crack the top 30 watched shows. You know what did? Fresh Prince and Family Matters, and of course the #1 show through the entire 90’s, ER, which spotlighted black actors, Deezer D, Yvette Freeman, Eriq La Salle (R.I.P.), and Lyn Henderson. Friends’ humor hasn’t seemed to have aged well to the younger generations, but the show was hot for a reason, yet still never beat ER.

They are not completely different shows there is so much undeniable similarities! Personality wise with little differences, character and house setting, some circumstances… I watched living single to study those differences and not just to enjoy the show because I was a huge fan of friends, but I don’t want to enjoy it with ignorance of the fact that white always steals and capitalize on poc and FRIENDS was one of those. Friends actors can’t even admit that living single was even the primary blueprint for friends. They think their show was unique.
