I have the Bushnell bore sighter that works quite well for me. I use the 2 shot method. Make the first shot. Keep the scope dead on the target and not moving the rifle, dial the scope to the hole you just shot.

Like the fact that you are real and not trying to blow smoke….its beneficial for us who are just getting into or interested in picking up a new TC Encore and want to sight it in and not waste a lot of shells. Have a great day from Montana

If you put your rifle in a gun rest and shoot ONE round. Say you hit 4” left 6” low? Put your rifle back in the gun rest/vice, put your crosshairs back on the bullseye then move your crosshairs to the bullet hole! This lines your scope up with the barrel! Very few adjustments!

That's how I zero'd my 22LR and 22 pellet rifle. When I get my first hunting rifle (this winter), it looks like I'll be getting a bore sight tool - but honestly, I'd rather just borrow one. If you look after your rifle & tighten your scope & rail bolts every now & then, I wouldn't assume anything, even a big bore like 45-70, should be off-paper at 100yds....

I always sight in at 50 yds. Its closer to bore sight. Also, a direct bullseye at 50 yards, with a scope, will put you around 1 inch high at 100 yds. Works great for me.

I wish I could send a video of how I was taught to bore sight a rifle the best way. Put your rifle in a gun rest/ vice. Shoot one round. Put your gun back in the gun rest/vice. Put your crosshairs back on the bullseye. Move your crosshairs to the bullet hole. This hole is exactly where your barrel was pointing so you need to move your crosshairs to that hole this lines your scope up with the barrel! The next shot will be very close to the bullseye within inches! Or closer!

Another way is to shoot your rifle at 15 yards at a 1” bullseye. Say you shoot 4” left and 6” low. Then with your rifle a gun vice put your crosshairs back on the bullseye then move your scope the Bullet hole. This lines your scope up to the barrel. This makes sure your scope is lined up with where your bullet is hitting.

So the way I do it is I look down the bore and look down the scope. If you have a rifle that you can do that with and then I line them two up, take a shot and then I hold the scope and the gun on the target where I was actually aiming and then dial the scope to the point of that shot

Greg , I have my POI at two inches high at one hundred yards . This will be centered at 200 yards and slightly lower at 300 yards. For my caliber of choice . In South Dakota the shots can range from 15 yards out to 400 yards. I personally wont attempt anything over 300 yards . I hunt draws and river breaks mostly .

I have personally had more success dialing the rifle on to paper with either the bore sighter or the look through the bore method especially if I do it at 100 and get good and on paper that way. Then shoot a group rather than a single shot then adjust to the group. I used to try the 2 shot method but I really like to have those data points since then I know that that shot wasn’t a fluke.
@OhGawdHesGotAGun
@OhGawdHesGotAGun 3 ай бұрын
Absolutely! The "aim at the bullseye, shoot, then move the crosshairs to the hole" is a good method to get on paper, but you're right -and especially with a 45-70 here, long barrel or not. Dialing in to where it 'should go' according to that shot will get you closer, but if you're safely on paper, sending a variety of ammo, all in groups of 3, will give tell you both what your rifle likes best, and you'll get the most accurate zero. I get the reluctance to waste ammo, but seems to me this is the time you really should use a variety & use the center of groups, not individual holes, to dial in what's meant to be a hunting rifle. I see no reason why someone would use fewer than a total ~12 rounds of varying brands, to accurately zero. If it were a 22-250, 223 or 243 or any PRC cartridge, the 3-shot zero makes more sense.

Is that a visual alignment on that laser sighter? I have used the bore sighting method and also have a Bushnell bore sighter. Never tried the last method lately. Thanks Greg, get those Tc's coming.

Great job. I would recommend working on recoil control. When you shoot the muzzle should not come up but move directly to the rear.

I think a good sales point for the pro hunter would be suppressor use I see a lot to people the are taking rifles that are chambered in cartridges that need a longer barrel but cut them down so there rifle isn’t crazy long with the suppressor on Since that gun doesn’t have a receiver you could gain back that 4-5” of barrel and have the same overall length as a bolt gun with the suppressor Instead of a 6.5prc with 18-20” barrel that pro hunter could have a 22-24” barrel with same overall length all length and gain back more of the proformance

I’d throw that laser bore sight in the garbage. I have an old cabelas bore sight with the scope style grid sight and it will put you really close at 50 yards. Make one adjustment, then on to 100 yards. Laser wasn’t even on the paper at 25 yards, pretty bad.

If your rifle was built correctly -IE action machined correctly, barrel chambered correctly, threaded correctly and bedded in the stock correctly. None of this is needed. Any high quality scope is centered with its adjustments. Correctly mount the scope and all have to figure is for your scope height. At 100 yards. Left/right POI should be center on target and impact should be slightly high that directly relates to your scope height, from center of bore. Now with this being said I’ve only had 1 rifle in my 56 years that this was possible to do. It’s a 40x Remington from the custom shop. I mounted a very high-quality loophole target scope in a set of tally rings lap them which was it necessary. Took it to the range. Fired rifle at 100 yards left to right was perfect. It was 2 inches high. We were dead on 200 yards adjustment 100 yards shot again center punched Bullseye dialed my elevation of 500 yards and hit a 6 inch gong next shot.

I sure would love to know how to get ahold of Gregg. I have a muzzleloader that will not shoot under a 12” group at 100 yards and I have done everything! I called the customer service at smith and Wesson and they basically said they couldn’t do anything for me cause they didn’t own T/C anymore. Anyone know what I could do??

I likely make less $ than most, if not all, of you in these comments, so I feel your pain, and I am a beginner - I'm the one learning from you all, so if you'll allow me to cop the attitude for a minute here - if you buy a new rifle & scope for ~$3k, how about buying 3 or 4 boxes/brands of ammo while you're there & find out what your rifle groups best? I'm omitting subsistence hunters from this pov of course. Even this canon shooting 45-70 (not eco-bullets, shortage or not), you should experiment with a few options, right? I've seen what feels like 100 videos on economical ways to zero a new rifle so far, and I'm thinking isn't this the one time you *shouldn't* be economical? I submit extra sympathy re: ammo costs in this case, a canon like 45-70 is never gonna be cheap. I've never heard of a sub-MOA 45-70, even this single-shot with what looks like 24" of barrel at least, so good shootin' here for sure. This is a 'Katahdin', right? I read you can swap the barrel out for another caliber, even shotgun. I haven't seen a threaded stainless steel barrel before either. But from new, especially if you're gonna be hunting with it, shouldn't you put ~40 rounds through it regardless? Zero it with the cheapest ammo, but still, sample a variety til you find Cinderella with her MOA group?

Don't bore sight up close. Do it as far away as you can. I'm talking real bore sighting. Not using gadgets that usually don't work. Think parallax, most error is up close.
