I am a military trained shooter, made expert marksman my first time out on 250m targets with rifle irons. You are covering EVERYTHING my instructor was insistent about. He would have us all take up our shooting position, align our sights and then close our eyes for a few seconds. He made the point, if you open your eyes and your sights have shifted off target...your rifle is not correctly aligned with your body. A bit of practice and it becomes second nature. That "tip" alone brought my groups down dramatically. TRIGGER CONTROL was drilled in to all of our heads along with breath and heartbeat timing. Eye focus and shot follow through is another aspect we practices that was stressed. Thank you for this video, great refresher of fundamentals that will improve anyone's shooting.

I just want to give a big thanks to you! I'm 73 years old, and have been shooting/hunting for 60 years. I always thought of being a fairly good marksman until I watched this video. After having a less than mediocre range session last week, I made a note of all your tips on an index card and taped them to my range bag. Went step by step as you discussed, and my range session today was miraculously unbelievable. Went from shooting 2-2.5 MOA to sub MOA, with my 7MM-08 turning in a .375" group.Biggest help was squaring up the body and rifle to target, and shooting 2 eyes open. You made me a very happy camper !

Excellent advice!! I have coached target shooting for over twenty years and I hunt as well. Natural alignment, breathing cycle and trigger control are the most vital components in getting rounds stacked on target. Follow through is absolutely essential but possibly the hardest thing to teach people who are what I call 'Bang Bolt merchants!' Think beyond the shot. The shot should not be your end game. The 'release' of the shot should be at the centre point of the process. Visualise how you control the rifle through and beyond the shot, imagine the bullet travelling very slowly to the target and think through an impact.....hold.... release....breath. Also worth adding, that ideally, never take in a full chest full of air and hold your breath at that point. You will be extremely tense and force natural alignment off. Breath in-out-in...o..u..t..relax and suspend breathing with a natural quantity of air in your lungs....ease off the shot....hold.... release and breath in again. Don't panic about a follow up shot and a rushed reload and break of position. Be ready of course, but after your accuracy cycle. I utterly agree that shooting with both eyes open is a fantastic way to improve accuracy. Even open sight target shooters will occasionally use this technique although there are different reasons why they may not. With a scope.....keep 'em open!! Unless you have crazy eye dominance issues where you need to force your non-dominant eye to work harder because you are say a right hander with a very dominant left eye, then that may change things. For most people, practice with both open and allow your brain to do the final focus calculation as the target comes to the kill zone. This video is great advice. In a hunting scenario, it's also important to remain disciplined and not focus on the kill having to take place. It really doesn't. Great if it can and happens, but don't force it. If you control breathing, focus on heart rate and stay as calm and relaxed as possible, you will maintain the presence of mind to focus on all the vital components of accurate shot placement as outlined in this video. If you get over excited and allow your adrenaline to flow and heart rate to climb, your mental capacity will be on the wrong autopilot settings! 'Train hard, shoot easy' to steal and adapt a well known expression! 😊 All excellent advice here in your video. 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻

One of the best tutorials I have watched. Spot on with everything you covered. Some people find it hard to stay on the scope or irons with both eyes open, but you have to train yourself. My dad taught me to close one eye, but by the age of 9, I had taught myself to shoot with both eyes open, with any rifle or pistol and any type of sight. That was 52 years ago. It seemed more natural, and I could see so much more with no strain on the eyes. Tracking your target with both eyes while maintaining cheek to stock contact makes all the difference.

Thanks Greg good advice. My dad although a world class pistol shooter never really taught me how to shoot. I just got a brick of 22 and figured it out. As I Progressed to bigger game and calibers I wanted to shoot better. Dad being in the Army like 3006 . So here I go 15 years old with 220 grain bullet that just belted me. I just wanted to shoot without flinching. Saved up money and bought a 270 Winchester, and taught myself to shoot better just like you are teaching long before utube or anything else was a around, I called dry firing to my son marry your finger to the trigger! on whatever gun you are shooting. i will and do dry fire a week or two before season every year and at my range. Had a retial detachment in my left eye and couldn't close it so I left both eyes open and I teach it also. One thing I do that you didn't cover. I also taught myself to shoot left-handed I am right-handed. Made sense to me my strong-arm holding rifle and pulling trigger with left finger or not dominant arm.It allowed me to shoot a 16.250 " Antelope in Wyoming at 630 yards although i will not shoot that far again was a quick one shot kill and was shooting 3-4 times a week for 6 months going into the hunt while several of my hunting buddies were amazed. Enjoy Hunt Masters and excited you are bringing T/C back to life have Encore, contender which was my sons and daughters first deer gun they are short and light not to long they can aim at a young age.YOU SHOULD MARKET THAT! Excellent video. I would like to expand on your concept of "target panic" a bit. When you are shooting from anything short of a solid bench rest, your sight is moving, a LOT. As a squirrel hunter who walks a lot, the vast majority of my shots are from off-hand, yet I make about 80% one-shot kills on most hunts. I describe it as the reverse of shooting birds with a shotgun. You need to break the shot with the barrel aimed where the bird WILL BE, not aiming at the bird which will have you miss behind. With the rifle, I need to have my shot break when I am aimed AT the target, but if I commit to the trigger squeeze when I see that, I will be off of the target by the time my shot leaves. I try to embrace the movement and control it such that I am consistently moving across the center of my target, and then make my commitment just before crossing center - I tend to settle on a bit of a diagonal movement, from high to low. Yes, this requires a lot of practice to get the timing right, and does go against the "the shot should surprise you" doctrine. I really think it is the next level technique for unsupported shooting, and beginners should probably start with staying as close as possible to the center and squeeze so that they are surprised - I can't remember how long it has been since I shot like that, but I know I did not hit anywhere close to the number of shots I make now. I think I really cemented this technique when qualifying for NRA Expert and Distinguished Expert for the off-hand portions of both air rifle and small bore rifle (50 foot .22 rimfire) courses. Again, great video, and I also endorse the concept of trigger follow-through - there's no hurry to yank your finger off of the trigger after the shot has left. AND - I always know if I had a feed jam after a shot, as I will feel and hear the interrupter click as it resets when my bolt is back in battery, since all is calm and quiet at that point.

In the Navy I was one of the best because I practiced DRY FIRE.
@sethrothenbuhler79503 ай бұрын
GREAT video. I 100% agree about dry fire. Dry fire is something people do not understand how important it is. I think I dry firing 10 times for every one live fire round I shoot to reduce the "flinch" factor to an absolute minimum. I do have a question about my circumstance. I am left eye dominate (My best seeing eye), astigmatism in the right eye, and a lazy right eye (yes, I wear glasses that correct some of it). I can shoot pistol with both eyes open because of the head positioning my chin closer to my shoulder. While shooting a rifle, I HAVE to close one eye because I'll start to see double or the alignment gets all screwed up. I have tried some training to make it work, but it is a tough one to work through. Do you have any ideas what I can do?

Good tips. For learning and establishing natural point of aim, I find that it helps to get on target, close my eyes for a few seconds, then open my eyes and see how much the point of aim has moved and then correct my body position accordingly. Even if you know your natural point of aim shooting position, this is helpful to fine tune it for variations in terrain at each location. After natural point of aim is properly dialed in, dry fire while watching for changes in the point of aim detects and corrects trigger pull issues. I also find it helps to squeeze the trigger while I'm exhaling. Exhaling slowly makes a more stable and relaxed shooting platform.

I converted to two eye open shooting but some people have a lot of trouble with it, particularly with higher magnification optics. Maybe it's a perceptual thing, or maybe some people have a problem with eye mechanics. It may not be for everyone but I recommend everyone give it a good try to see if it works better for them. It'll seem weird at first but give it time.

Excellent video! Finding your natural point of aim (NPA) is essential for consistency and accuracy. And dry-firing is the best way to expose errors in grip and trigger control. Another important element to great accuracy and consistency is follow-through. I've never understood this 45 degree prone position. Who teaches this?! You have to align your body with the direction of the barrel. Regarding trigger control and grip. The goal is to deliberately squeeze the trigger such that you cause the gun to fire, but without disturbing your sight alignment, or aim. Errors in grip and trigger control can be greater than your wobble area. Combined, you can verify your NPA, grip, and trigger control, by following through. After the gun fires, and comes to rest, are you still aligned with your target? If the gun jumps, resting somewhere other than where it was before the shot, you were shooting with unwanted bias. The goal of practice is to eliminate unwanted bias. For hunting practice, I recommend loading a live round first into the magazine, followed by as many snap-caps rounds as your magazine can hold, and maybe chambering an extra snap-cap. This will not only help you better practice these fundamentals without the masking of your mistakes with recoil, but also bring you closer to duplicating cold-bore shots.

A few years ago, while I was doing some dry fire training with a handgun, I was doing the two eyes open and decided to close my left eye. When I did that, the sights shifted. I then looked at the sights with my right eye closed and the sights were on target again. Either I have always been that way and didn't know it or in my older age, my dominant eye changed to my left. I still shoot right handed. It was a little weird to me to discover that.

When I was in the Marine Corps, we were taught to wrap our arm in our sling to bring the rifle into the shoulder pocket nice and tight. What are your thoughts on this. Obviously there’s the issue of one were to go too tight then you are now torquing the rifle to the left or right depending on your dominant eye. I’ve always thought this to be helpful for me. Fast forward to today. I just bought a Tikka T3X Superlite chambered in 7mm Remington Magnum and going to sight it in, I was seated at a bench (the range seats are way too low and you basically end up sitting on a quarter of one cheek to get low enough). I had the rifle propped up on a couple bags and instead of using a sling and wrapping my arm in it, I used my friends preferred method and had my non shooting hand (left hand) under the butt of the stock to hold the rifle in position. I feel like my shots were all over the place at first because 1) I had never shot like this before and 2) I felt like I had no control of the recoil (like you mention in this video) as I do with the sling. I had used the sling method on my 30-06 and had no issues in the past with recoil beating me to death but the method with the 7mm REM Mag kicked my ass on top of the other issues. I’m also looking into a good bipod setup just not sure what to get being I have never used one in the past either

Trigger advise; at least for target shooting (from pistol coaches in Tucson that wrote a book): you should know when the gun goes off. No surprises. No jerking, no flinching but deliberate controlled trigger pull. With practice you'll know when the gun should go off - and if it does not you have a problem (e.g. cartridge did not seat fully - more of a 22 problem though). Two eyes; with two very different images and focus ranges it's hard to flip from one eye to the next as to which one you want to prioritize. It's a good skill. To nitpick; at least when hunting; you have the game target - other animals or people are NON-targets. I'm sure that is what you meant, just giving you a friendly hard time.

I have found that driving the skill of shooting home with two eyes open begins with dry firing over and over and then taking the skill to the range by looking off the target and looking off them Bulls eye and scanning across and taking the shot as you move to the target aim point. If you are shooting at the range with a buddy, using a target with multiple aim points, and as you go have him say which target ie; bottom left with both eyes open and to can glide right on to it. If you have one eye, open good luck. If you want to drive home the massive safety issue, have your buddy have a laser on from time to time the called target with laser be a no go. As that gets in grained have the laser move, the point over different target . It is sobering to realize how often with if you don't have both eyes open or getting off the target that your barrel would have taking you over a possible deadly consequences. Spoiler alert only opening both eyes at the last minute in the drill has, at least for me or all the buddies I shoot with, it has taken a beat or two to then adjust and there goes the opportunity. Hope this might be of use to someone.

Even if I was just sweeping the floor and helping as a "Gofer" Greg is a Good Dude, And is just the man to bring the company back to life. And all he will need is the help to do it.
