saxophone taking the lead sounds really lovely- a bit steely dan dare I say? A song 20 years old sounds so nice, has matured so well.

I tip my hat off to any electric mopholder or floor waxer that implements, well studies that bass line. I've listened to the original LP version countless times searching for anything different, something I might've missed. My thing here would be try to learn and grab your own interpretation of it and not Mark's because that's his so just improvise and make your own, everyone learns differently. If you were real paying attention to this clip he ended and stated ' You don't know until try' there's enough motivation for you right there.

I was at this gig. The FOH mix was nothing like this vid. The bass was high as it should be. The tone on this vid is nothing like the live tone I heard. This sounds flat and dull. The live tone was classic Mark King,, deep, bright chorus sounding E and A strings and Very transparent highs.

I’m so glad you said this! This mix is horrible, as is the video edit. Who produced this?? Cheers to you for being lucky enough to see this in person !

still prefer his old jaydee bass...

yes the jaydee and Alembic basses have a much better sound

Stephen Hillis i agree. graphite necks make slap bass sound very plasticky i think.
@MichaelDavidFinn4 жыл бұрын
Stephen you are so right! The sound of JayDee Supernatural Custom Series I, (or Mark King model), turned out to be Mark’s signature sound. There was the woody sound of the JayDee, and the HiFi of the Status-Graphite, [Series II and 2000] In fact you can hear each trademark of Mark’s sound & playing, on his solo EP Influences. As far as Alembic, great instruments with fantastic grain in the woods, excellent pickups and electronics, and medium scale 32” necks. However, for me, his sound was thin and the snap on the strings was weak compared to the slap. Also, make note that the Forever Now album was recorded using MusicMan Stingray 4-and-5 string basses. Nowadays, the latest Status-Graphite basses, especially the ParaMatrix KingBass models are able to produce such full and round tones, from those thin 30-90 funkmaster strings, it’s unreal! Mark always likes being unpredictable so instead of his Status KingBass models, he plays Status T-Basses and sounds amazing!

Everyone that I know that has followed Level 42 from the beginning all say the exact same thing to which I agree & that is the John Diggins Supernatural Series of Bass Guitar's is by far the better bass but I guess Mark prefers Rob Green's Status Bass Guitar range but then again I've heard & seen Mark do a lot of promoting for Status Bass Guitar's & especially TC Electronics... This was the same guy (as in Mark King) that always used to say I don't really bother with effects pedals but in the last 15 years I see him plugging them!.. I'm not having a go at Mark but he's clearly changed his stance on effects pedals for financial reasons in my honest opinion... Theres nothing wrong with that as we all have Bill's to pay but just be honest about it... I think that's why Mark doesn't get any flack from fans as he is a genuine down to earth guy who likes a laugh but is very serious about his music & musicianship & if he feels the need to plug TC Electronics & use their pedals then fair play to him as he is a down to earth guy who knows Bill's need paying... Why do you think Level 42 constantly play Live as they haven't released any new music in decades & who can blame them as the music scene & industry that we all grew up with is down & out... Being in the music industry was always tough but even more so now that the current music industry & scene is a pale imitation of the behemoth industry that churned out thousands of amazing solo act's or band's that could play at the highest level within popular music for decades... I'm looking forward to seeing them kick off their 40th Anniversary Tour " From Eternity To Here " in October 2020 as ive been a fan since their early years & you just don't get bands of this high calibre anymore... If someone had told me at the start of 90s that not so far into the future music was on it's way out as an art form both musically & with regards to album art also, I wouldn't have believed it but alas this is where we are at & i continue to try & turn generation after generation on to music so that it survives with them picking up instruments & doing what we did & that was practice for many many hour's on end & when you were good enough you learned all your favourite bands songs bass lines & if you wanted to go further you went into the music scene just like your peers before you but not now... Well we've at least got Level 42 still gigging along with a few other acts from back in the days like U2/Duran Duran/Depeche Mode & Simple Minds just to name a few... RIP Boon Gould RIP Alan Murphy RIP Mick Karn " Sadly Gone But Not Forgotten " .....

@presidentsherman ;He is a very different drummer ,not superior. At the level these guys play at ,they are all great !.
@presidentsherman13 жыл бұрын
@76alembic Yes, better keyboard player than I thought he was. However, Pete Ray Biggin is far superior on the drums. I saw L42 here in L.A. last year and he was off the hook on the kit.

That bass sounds sooooo weedy compared to his Alembic or Jaydee. Sorry Mark. Dump the status!

Not as good as the originals, but never would be. Biggin and King are too similar on their instruments. Great sound though still.
