Gilbert is one of a small handful of oldschool guitar players who isnt a jerk, kept it together through the 80's & 90's and hasnt lost his mojo.

Paul has always been a down to earth guy. Remember seeing him in Racer X as well in the 80’s. A real musicians musician. No big ego or attitude with this guy.

you'll notice in all these rig run downs and such....Paul always shows off his OWN gear...not all give the time. That's very telling and a reflection of his character!! he's as good a person as he is a guitar player!!

I like listening to this guy - I'm actually learning things about setting tones and vibes from him by watching this video! I really appreciate his openness and transparency about what he's doing, how he's doing it and why. For instance, during this video he actually shows you what do each of these different pedals sound like as he's going through them. One of the best guitar rig rundowns I have seen.

I love that he get's his tone from distortion pedals. I've always used them & find you get more control with them & they can sound just as good as tube distortion.

I caught Mr Big back in the day at Gazzarri's in Hollywood. Word got around town that a new Guitar Wonder boy named Paul Gilbert was in town and all the local guitar players swung by to check him out, grab a girl to bang and take off.

I like how simple his board is. Couple drives, a unit to power his pedals, a delay and reverb, phaser, chorus/vibe, and compressor. Most people would've shoved those pedals as close together as possible because "Hey, I can shove another 3 pedals on my board!"

I met Scott Travis when my band opened the first three Fight shows back in 91’/92’. I asked him about playing with Paul and his experience in Racer X. He said Paul would fall sleep playing his guitar and they’d wake him with it still in his hands. Paul has put his time in and then some. 🎸

Chris Oliva from Savatage did it, too. He used 2 Boss DS-1 in series in front of a Marshall 1959 (although he had a Laney-endorsement, i know a couple of ppl who saw him playing back then, and he never used a Laney). And not to mention myself, did it for a long time :D :P Works great as long as you have a good amp behind the pedals. It just doesnt work in front of every amp. And, most important: the fingers....

I use 2 drive pedals in front of a Laney AOR Pro Tube 100, a DS-1 and a TS-808, both set as boosters (level only, no distortion). They sound great. The TS adds crispness for rhythms and the DS adds warmth for solos.

Nice thing is that the pedals are affordable. The Marshall stack will cost some money but a Fender Twin can do the same thing.

I love the way he uses the Alter Ego Delay. I use a Reverb pedal the same way. I'm not a huge Reverb guy, but I use just a smidge to "have some clothes" on, and not feel completely naked.
