What I love about Paul is whenever he talks and plays guitar, his passion, joy, and enthusiasm makes it seem like he just discovered the instrument yesterday. He gets excitement out of the simplest things like a bend in an almost child-like way. For someone like me who's been playing for 20+ years, that's incredibly inspiring.

Its so encouraging to hear The Man himself has trouble with finger picking and hybrid picking. I certainly leave that to the professionals, lol
@CynHicks
@CynHicks 3 ай бұрын
Finger picking on an electric is so much harder than on classical nylon. Especially if you are a flesh to string type and don't use nails or finger picks. The lack of string tension and spacing was designed for finger style. Imo that's how everyone should approach finger style in the beginning. Even steel stringed acoustics aren't usually designed with finger style in mind. You can do it of course. Unfortunately the muscle memory gained on nylon won't immediately translate over to electric but it really helps.
@Winstonrodney6989
@Winstonrodney6989 3 ай бұрын
I feel fortunate that my first guitar teacher as a kid made me learn dust in the wind. If you get that muscle memory early it never really leaves you. On the other hand, the big neoclassical string skips that Paul did at the end are way beyond my ability.

I was a classically trained pianist prior to playing guitar. My brain too wanted to make my fretting hand move in a linear fashion, it took a lot of effort to overcome that instinct and think across the fretboard instead of up and down according to pitch. Met Paul briefly one time at a guitar clinic, he was very gracious and polite, despite obviously being jet-lagged.

Absolutely is. Watching him is inspiring to the enth degree. The joyous exhilaration he displays is uplifting. He is one of the virtuosic players wherein skill comes from the sheer love and affection for music and finding warmth by having both rational and natural flow. Not as many as there are few, have disciplined light spiritedness. Vai to a definite point does too however he's of a haughtier light heartedness, a sharp soft kind soul might be about right.

When I met Paul in a clinic that actually was a little jam-concert in Mexico City several years agoI had the chance to have a tiny talk with him and I asked Was the most difficult song that he had to learn or play and his answer was: Ooohhhh there is a lot of them, and I think of myself: really? He could play almost everything then I thought What a humble guy. He is great in many ways not just as an excellent musician

Love how he brings up a 3 note lick and a number of ways you can finger that. This is the great thing with music, you can take 2-4 notes and it seems you have infinite options; the very hard thing is that you have infinite options. Too many choices screwed up many a musician. Love the excitement he still has for music.

A few years back he came to our smaller city of Lawrence, KS and played at local awesome club The Bottleneck. I’m only 5 years younger than Paul and, like so many Gen X guitarists, remember when he came into the scene, as one of the Shrapnel Records guitar gods. Even though, back in 1989, I saw Mr Big open up for Rush, the Bottleneck show was something even more special. It was intimate and he was so engaging with the audience; with details on how he was playing and his approach to writing specific songs in the set. The band killed it, of course. He’s truly in the pantheon of the greatest to ever play the instrument. Also, talk about someone you could just hang out with! Nothing but respect.

Back in the late 80s, he was touring with Mr. Big. He did an in-store meet and greet and was demoing Ampeg amplifiers. There was about 30 of us in the music store and he was super cool. The funny thing I remember was he said learning guitar is just like eating Oreos. You eat one and then you play one note; you eat another Oreo and then you play two notes. Until the bag is gone. Haha, it was funny. I don’t think it’s quite as simple as that. He’s amazingly gifted.

I preferred High Action with lighter strings to be able to grab the string and it doesn't get away from me on bends! As Gilbert said, action does seem to get low down by G-F closer to the nut. I suppose it might depend though in what the frets are.
