My dude, I understand the visceral feeling of the Spiritmonger. It is my avatar for a reason; I did not change it for this video. I believe that every Magic player has a "Shivan Dragon." This is true for all players, and is 100% of the time, a creature. It is that creature that is or does something so awesome, and in a way that player intuits - it's that moment when that player *feels* and understands the meeting of fantasy and reality simultaneously. It's the drug - the first hit that players will spend the rest of their careers chasing, and never quite feel again. Spiritmonger is my Shivan Dragon. I had been playing for maybe three months when I found this card and thought it was amazing. I built decks around it. My friends tried to tell me I was a fool and that all creatures were bad. My monger and I served them their humble pie.

The invasion block was one of hte best block ever printed. Fun powerful, Great creatures AND powerful spells and GOOD removal AND good counter magic, AND good hate. It was basicly a refined urza's block. It delivered on amazing Everything was worth money (back when printed) can you imagin a set today where average rare price was over $2? The value was spread just SO well it made trading easy, it made buying easy and the good stuff was everywhere you think the rares were good the COMMONS/UNCOMMONS were good and tourniment playable!

Totally agree. I starting playing mtg this block at the ripe ole age of 9. I used to think it was just the nostalgia of the situation that made me so fond of the block. But as a looked back as I got older, the block was just perfection. The first card I opened was a foil qurion dryad. I got schooled by group of really good players who I knew outside of our local game store.. I was young but I knew the ins and outs from them training me as they all were trying to go pro. I loved drafting back then and it was partly because of this format. I really really liked origins but that block had problems ( I just like the problems the block had ).

Dude, this was probably the coolest throwback vid I've ever watched on oldschool mtg. I started playing in 10th edition and I was around 11 at the time. I know it's not as far back as a lot of people, but I loved playing with the tenth edition precons. A friend of mine started in Kamigawa and another one had a brother who had been collecting since Revised. I didn't know what most of the cards even did, nor did I fully comprehend the rules for quite some time, but from the time I began all the way until I got to college something about mtg just kept pulling me back in. There was a real thrill, and when I was 14 I finally figured out how the game was supposed to be properly played (no LGS, so I had to actually read the rules that I never noticed). As a freshman in college, my very first friend group I met as they were playing EDH in our dorm lounge. It was fucking awesome, and brought back every fond memory I had ever had of the game.

The Invasion Block is also the same block that Magic sunk it's Teeth into me. At the time I was working at a Comic/Music/Book shop in Hawaii called Jelly's. I worked in the Comics Dept. Of the store and actually wanted nothing to do with Magic. But to become a better salesman/employee, because I didn't want to keep directing customers to the Magic Guys I took up learning the game during the Mercadian Block. But it wasn't until Invasion dropped that the hype hit. The rest is history. My faves, not listed in this video were the Brothers of Discarding, named such after Kane and The Undertaker, Blazing and Doomsday Specter. Excellent Vid.

invasion block is my favorite block of all time. It was the block that had just finished when I really started getting into Magic and thus the one I traded cards for the most. I remember doing anything I could to get my hands on Kavu creatures as I thought they were the coolest thing in the game. Kinda sad to think back to what I might have traded for such things as Slimy Kavu and Kavu Recluse. Looking at cards from this block fills me with nostalgia and fond memories more than any other block. I'm actually working on an Invasion block cube, despite the pleas from my playgroup to "pick something good". Thanks for the video. I'm going to blast this on my playgroup's chat just to make my point again.

I started playing magic in Jan 1994, with Unlimited and Arabian Nights; I sold all my stuff and stopped playing at Homelands. Invasion brought me back and I stayed thru Kamigawa at which point I lost interest and cashed out again. Good times.

Invasion was my true initiation block. To this day I giggle with excitement whenever I see a Kavu due to excitement of playing Horned Kavu on turn two. INSANE! Recurring pings for just 2 mana using Sparkcaster alongside familiars and then finishing with HUMONGOUS Shivan Wurm is what got me hooked on Magic hard. Before that I just played from time to time. After Invasion released we started skipping classes at school just to play some more MtG in the school's cafeteria.

Sadly my collection was stolen and It took many years for me to get back into the game, and Ive had an on again off again thing with magic sets ever since! Invasion was awesome :) I started playing Magic when Legends hit the shelves. I was around 7 years old and a friend of mine actually had Ancestral Recall and Time Walk but we treated the cards like any other deck of playing cards. None of us knew the rules and stopped playing. Jade Leech saw play in Fires. Crosis saw play in Extended Reanimator, and also a bit of play in Standard, and ton of play in Block (Rith as well for Block). Quirion Dryad / Land Grant / Gush / Force of Will / Daze / Swords to Plowshares / Winter Orb was so pleasing to play. The deck was consistent, and it was very rare at that time that a deck with such a low land count (12 to 14) could be so consistent. Phyrexian Scuta didn't have as much impact as people thought it would back in the day because of the Kicker mechanic: if it gets countered, you still lose 3 life; if it gets terminated, you still lost 3 life; If it gets bounced, you still lost 3 life AND you have to pay 3 more life... It is no Juzam (but it was still decent in Standard, decent enough that it won Worlds in BR aggro). Invasion was an awesome block, along Odyssey. I really miss these days, where Standard was fun to play, had interesting mechanics, had intricate interactions, and was rather cheap to build into.

You kind of forgot the reason that Invasion was multicolor; there was a good 2 year period where there were *no* multicolor spells altogether. The Invasion block was awesome at the time and it remains my favorite block to this day. There were so many great cards for basically all kinds of players, not to mention card advantage was ALL over the place. So many cards had kicker effects that generated card advantage or straight up drew you a card. Beyond all that, most of the cards were just COOL. Crosis? Thunderscape Battlemage? The Volver cycle? Desolation Angel? Lightning Angel? Mystic Snake? Phyrexian Arena? The damn WEATHERLIGHT finally got a card, after all those years. I mean, jesus christ, I could sit here and list rad cards all day. The only detractor from an otherwise A+++ block was that the mana wasn't really all that good. You had the uncommon Salt Marsh cycle of course, but outside of that and the enemy pain lands, there wasn't much on offer. The Lairs seemed fairly strong until you played your Treva's Ruins and had it Recoiled back to your hand; talk about FeelsBadMan. Other than that, though... just a fantastic block. To this day I still try to play Invasion block copies of cards when possible. Hilariously enough, one of the local game stores where I live put together a sanctioned Invasion Block Constructed tournament a few weeks before M15 came out and we all got paid off for picking up the enemy pain lands. Not only was the tournament awesome (my sideboarded Trench Wurm ate a LOT of lands), but those of us that elected to get Apocalypse copies of said pain lands were set for the next couple of years for Standard.

Knowing Gerrard had a card, Tahngarth, Hanna, Sisay, Squee, all of the different parts of the Legacy existed in card form in some way, put me on a quest to make a deck with all of them, and would pack the obvious game winning 5 color sorcery (not Coalition Victory because I didn't know it existed). I'm positive this is the reason I love EDH as much as I do.

Great episode. Since you wanted fav old school blocks....Time sprial block, and lorwyn block are probably my 2 favs.(Although original rav and inistrad blocks are awesome as well) Time spiral was a way for me to experience the past of magic in just a single set. It also tried and did a TON of different things. We have not gotten anything like it since, and probably never will. I mean plannar chaos and future site were both serious acid trips compared to most magic sets. Say fuck you to the color pie and try a whole bunch of new and interesting ideas, no matter how crazy. I mean futuresite gave us the first time planeswaker cards were called out, and contraptions. If that's not awesome, i don't know what is. And lorwyn was such a good flash in a pan. It was a tribal based block that did it right.(Unlike ixilan) Most rares in the block can basically say "I win the game" Which you might think sucks...but since almost all rares say that, made for a block that had limited games that can almost few reminiscent of commander games. The block also was the first time pw's were ever print as cards, made the problem card that is thoughtseize, was the set that made it so merfolk was a respectable tribe outside of lord of Atlantis, and is a set with some of the most colorful swamps you will ever see(seriously, look at the lands of lorwyn. They are awesome). And lets not forget bitterblossm in morningtide.
@Dirdle6 жыл бұрын
+1 for lorwyn lands mention. Also the most interesting (imo) designs of faeries and elves. And elementals. Probably not the absolute best art, considering Mirage, but damn close. And Noggin Whack (best name or extremely best name?). TSP block for close second; it was wild and inventive and cool but the doom-and-gloom setting's not my thing. Fond memories of Shivan Meteor on 1/1s though.

I remember playing the Block PTQ event in my region and just having the worst showing imaginable for someone who was used to fairing pretty well. I made the mistake of changing my deck last minute to Star Spangled Splatter (lightning angels u/r/w) instead of Domain. It was bad. You are right. I though the topic of the cideo was the invasion block in general, but that's just me not paying attention. Both the title and the video clearly state that this is about multicolor, so kicker would not have been relevant (except in minor things such as multicolor kickers, which in any case were already present in the first set of the block). Still, this video brought a lot of nostalgia! And I would like to hear about kicker another time.

I was in the middle of talking to someone, got the notification for a new Pretty Deece video, and literally told them "Sorry, got to go, I have a KZbin video I have to watch." 10 of 10, worth it. As for a block, there is one I really REALLY am missing some history from. Let's talk Lorwyn. I handle my shops singles, and every single time I see a card from Lorwyn/Morningtide/Eventide/holy crap was this a block or a cycle or....what the hell is this? Anyway, a little off topic, every time I see a single from this ......."Block"....... pop up on a tournament list, I know it will be swiftly followed by a price spike. I have heard multiple references to how little the set was opened as a reason for this, but I have no idea why. Tribal cards, -1/-1 counters, creatures coming back from the graveyard, multi-color cards, hybrid mana symbols (wasn't this their first appearance?), does this not sound like at least a casuals DREAM? I say that because it makes no sense to me that the set was opened so little, and even if the tournament play with the cards wasn't great, I would play all of these mechanics on my kitchen table all day long. So, I guess that is my request. Can you set the time machine back to 2007, and tell me how this plane (which on it's wiki is described as "Lorwyn-Shadowmoor was a plane with two aspects. While Lorwyn represents day, Shadowmoor is night. Lorwyn switched to Shadowmoor cyclically every 300 years, an unnatural event triggered by the Great Aurora" come ON, even THAT sounds awesome) got opened so little? P.S. I forgot, this was the first set with Planeswalkers in it, right? Come on, HOW was this set opened so little?

OG Ravinica was the first hybrid mana block. I can't state all the reasons for the lack of openings but on the heels of Future Sight many stopped playing and kithkin weren't exactly pulling people back in not to mention a horribly unbalanced and unfun standard due to Fairies.

My middle school days were filled with these cards. I still have them somewhere in a box in the house....

Man this brings back memories. I was in middle school and learned how to play on a basic level when invasion was released. I remember trying to run a 5 color deck bc I had a few copies of Draco and legacy weapon and kept wondering why I lost al the damn time haha
