What a genius! Apparently, the judges (?) decided that because he didn't use the "accepted" fingering techniques that he was "not worthy" of anything but 4th place. Amazingly, few remember the winner but this young man is taking the musical world by storm....so much for the technocrats! He is truly amazing and exciting to hear!

David Moran finally a comment from someone who knows at least something about piano playing. Sound quality is one of the chief wonders of the art of piano performance and the difference in sound different artists can male with the same instrument. Take Volodos and Horowitz for example

@JJTownley_Classical-Composer9 жыл бұрын
What do you do when you're playing an impossibly difficult piano passage, written by Liszt no less, and the orchestra gets ahead of you? Why you just play the impossibly difficult passage faster! At least that's what Lucas Debargue does in such scary situations, like 11:36 And notice at the double glissandi at 11:23 he uses only one hand (no, he doesn't do them in a single octave, though that'd be a neat Weberian trick). There really should have been platinum, gold, silver, and bronze this competition because really there were FOUR winners. From the looks of things, however it will be Debargue pushing the three very able medal winners into the shadows because of his spectacular playing combined with that novel, James Bond-like surreal early life he had...playing piano by ear as a beginner at 11, giving it up to become a bagboy at a supermarket, then resuming it at 20, combining serious study with honing excellent jazz piano skills, to place 4th at the most prestigious competition in the world four years later and only because, as someone who was a fly on the wall during jury deliberations, he played scales using only his thumb and index fingers. Apparently such techniques are beneath an artist of quality. Whaaaa...? Want to hear a "dream gig"? Debargue and Matsuev, who is the most incredible jazz pianist since Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum, together on stage doing sets. I'd pay all $2.49 in my bank account to watch that. Hey, why looking so disparaged? You never heard of the Widow's Mite?
