I tried to fix the over exposure, but this was the best I could do. Exciting tempi, as Balanchine wanted, and for it's day, outstanding speed and technique. Live TV had it's bloopers, like the camera staying on Hayden too long after one of her exits, etc.

I loved this! Thank you. I love the slow raising of her leg to her other foot at thr close of the Ist variation.

Grateful to be able to see what's on the footage. IMO, the emulsion in the "overexposed" portions is gone and I know of no way to restore it. If a digitized kinescope, the film is just blank, and if it's videotape, the magnetic particles have gone to the North Pole. You did what you could to preserve history. Thank you.

Ms. Hayden was so lovely here, thank you for posting this despite the overexposure. What year was this? I don’t se that anywhere. Jacque Damboise took impossible air time around the six minute mark. Pure joy and the music is always a treat. Thank you.

would this be considered THE original choreo? Some or all of the later recordings have certain differences.

For the woman’s variation it’s hard to know. It was originally for Diana Adams but she was injured before the premiere so Balanchine re-choreographed much of it for Violette Verdy. Verdy does different choreography, but possibly he made changes fir Hayden too.

Such buoyancy! The fast tempo helps of course, and yet they never seem rushed. I have a question: In general, almost no one today dances Balanchine at his tempos. Is it still possible to dance in an authentic Balanchine style at slower tempos? Does it depend on the height of the ballerina?

It’s not authentic Balanchine when it’s slowed down. And no it doesn’t depend on height. It depends on the training.

@@jcliff26 That's pretty much what I thought. It surprises me that companies don't look at original footage when available to get the right tempo, but I know there are even worse problems . . .
