I think some of the commenters never saw Lazar Berman live--it was like being in the presence of a supernatural being, a sorcerer who conjured impossible sounds from the piano as if it was his personal genie. At the end of every piece, it was so amazing everyone in the auditorium at FSU in 1984 leaped to their feet as if drawn by a magnetic force, applauding and cheering wildly. Incredible. I am a pianist and have seen many pianists live---no comparison, ever. Van Cliburn? Very nice...but no sorcery. Berman levitates you out of your seat. You can't resist. Sadly, passed away a couple years ago.

I realized recently that I saw him on that first tour of America in 1976. It was part of a series I bought at the U. of Miami Ohio. I didn't know him. I must of liked enough because I bought a recording of him playing Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet. The Tchaikovsky here is monumental. Like the destruction of Valhalla!
Lazar Berman is the hardest hitter and loadest player ever.Mikhail Pletnev is the hardest and loudest. But L.Berman is a sledgehammer. There much better version.I like the most A.Rubinstein played with a golden tone and the right peaceful tempos.Emil Gilels(1955 or 1983 with P.Berglund) The most relax Tchaikovsky concerto player is Ekaterina Novitskaya. Also Marta Argerich Mikhail Faerman are a fine too.The poor magazine Gramophone says buy this one?? Berman has only the power but a tone is a cold!

Lazar Berman is the second hardest hitter behind only Mikhail Pletnev.Berman can not play play Brahms 1 concerto or Scriabin.Berman plays always the same with an ice cold piano sound.Pl
