One can get "burned-out" from hearing this most often performed and recorded piano concerto. But Natalie Schwamova vividly demonstrates why among the constellation of immortal concertos for piano and orchestra, this one shall probably always reign supreme as the most universally popular of them all. Although the other two piano concertos Tchaikovsky composed are very fine pieces that have their moments, they cannot compare with this. Whereas his student, Rachmaninoff, was able to write all five of his works for piano and orchestra at an equally high level that qualifies them all as masterworks of the highest order. "I owe to God the gifts given to me, to God alone. Without Him, I am nothing." Sergei Vassilievitch Rachmaninoff
@ethanperreault74703 жыл бұрын
I can listen to this Concerto over and over again. All 3 movements shine in their own way and its the only concerto that I can listen to multiple times and not feel bored of it. Tchaikovsky was one of the best composers who ever lived no doubt.
@miltonmoore52947 жыл бұрын
Tchaikovsky, dubbed "The Symphonic Apostle of Gloom," was ANYTHING BUT gloomy in this charming, joyful, spirit- lifting masterpiece.😃😃 His student, Rachmaninoff, who was also subject to bouts of severe depression between intense periods of creation, was similarly dubbed "The Master of Melancholy and Bard of Intimate Moods." What are the odds that the world will ever be blessed with a teacher/student music pairing like this?!!!!😃😃😃😃

In one word, maestoso!!!!! (I have watched this video repeatedly. A major recording label needs to give her a lucrative contract, but only for DVD videos! She must be seen to be fully appreciated. I love the way she is not trying to break speed and volume records; one can luxuriate in all the notes unmuddied and polished, as in maestro Claudio Arrau's immortal version on Seraphim Records. This blossom must not be allowed to wither and die from the grind of competing with other artists, as good as they may be in their own way.

During those glorious passages where the woodwinds are employed, it sounds like birds positioned from their perches just off-stage have become so enthralled with the score that they are singing along with it, as the spirit of the music moves them, in a serenade of other-worldy utterances. Franz Joseph Haydn's last words were: "And I was just beginning to learn how to use the woodwinds!" Peter I. Tchaikovsky brought this aspiration to fruition in this masterpiece! All hail the Divine Creator of all things beautiful!"
@ruthboykin98736 жыл бұрын

I wonder if Caterina Valente has ever seen this video! My fave of Natalie's many solo performance videos is the Chopin Scherzo #2, Chopin Institute ch. Audio is too weak, but still well worth viewing. I wish my mother had lived long enough to have seen this video. I took her to many piano recitals over the years.
@ruthboykin98736 жыл бұрын
Your comment about your mother, touched my heart. You were a good son. Today is my mother's birthday(stepmother) but she is the only one I knew. She loved country music and so many of Webb Pierce, Ferlin Husky, Faron Young, Kitty Wells, and many others from that era. I was never able to take her anywhere. She did finally go to visit Nashville, with her brother in her early 70s. I have never been to a piano recital, or many other concerts of any kind. I saw Kitty Wells, the Wright brothers, she was married to Johnny I believe. Hank Williams, Jr when he was very young, I saw at a high school in Va. Ernest Tubb, Narvel Felts, Gene Watson, are a few I saw at county fairs. My tickets for John Fogerty , I have purchased for June 6th, I am super excited about.

Appreciate the comments! I just left a comment on that new Ray Price video BeMisty posted, which I notice you also liked. Of all the videos I have recommended, it gratifies me the most that you are so impressed by this one, since it is so far off the beaten path of country. But I was 100% sure you would like it! But nowhere NEAR as nuch as you do! Great music is great music. All these immortal classical music composers fed off gypsy tunes and the folk music of their era to embellish and build into more profound large scale symphonic masterpieces. So it is all tied in. If Tchaikovsky had been around when Ray Price was in his prime, he very likely would have been one of his biggest fans! And for all we know, Ray Price may have loved Tchaikovsky! The best part is that I doubt if you would ever have randomly encountered this video, whereas with the country, you already knew of much I have recommended, and would most likely have eventually found everything else on your own without me. Great music, and an appreciation and respect for God, are the greatest "ties that bind!"

@BonfiglioSergio8 жыл бұрын
What is astonishing here is the clarity and the precision. This performance recalls me my other favorite one, that is by Arthur Rubinstein. The speed also is quite correct, a little bit slower than the most of current famous pianists, but IMHO the right one. The vast majority todays pianists overspeed to show their virtuoso, and spoil this composition messing up with overuse and abuse of pedals. Astonishing is the right word that comes to my mind. Brava bravissima. Adorable.

The pieces were not listed, and what REALLY upsets me is comments are disabled for the video! How stupid! So I have to circumvent "the system" and leave my comment here. The final piece she played is one of the most remarkable exhibi- tions of elite pian- ism I have ever witnessed. It had that Lisztian soun- ing ardor, elegance, sweep, and flair, but I don't think it was Liszt. My admiration for Ms. Schwamova conti- nues to know no bounds. With play- of this magnitude and grace she will always have an audience.👍👏👍

Dear Javier Tan: Thanks for your kind assistance. I watched the 2nd round and was impressed. For some reason the comments section is NOT dis abled for the videos of the finals.(???) Anyway, it was nice to finally have new material from Natalie to view. Her Rachmaninoff 3; first movement randomly popped up, and I was elated. It was ever so gracefully and meticulously played, but lacked the fire I have seen from her, even in mere studio practice type videos. It seemed like she was hold- ing back. The male prize winner with a Russian sounding last name, but who was not listed as a Russian, also was underplaying this mighty warhorse. Perhaps for a reason. Also, the finals videos had weak audio which needs to be amped up. Thanks again!☺

I personally found the orchestra in the competition rather awful. I am also still wondering how Natalie only got 4th. The participant who got 3rd performed one of the most dismal Tchaikovsky 1 I have ever heard. The winner of the competition also did not perform the Rach concerto with as much clarity and many of his phrases sounded very murky and unclear.

What joy! A master of not-rushing-it. The little pauses here and there add so much. She is never agitated in her manner. I love how she seems to swoon when listened to the orchestra during her silences. A calm and serene rendition. How often this piece is played in part or in whole in a brutal or even cruel manner. Not here. The sweetness comes through always. This was like hearing the piece for the first time. I would attribute her brilliance to her gigantic intellect. @miltonmoore52947 жыл бұрын
I love this performance. However, "theatrical" performances can also be heartfelt. Many examples exist on you tube. And I have been in the audience of many over the decades.
I love your performance. The accuracy, dynamics, rhythm, and everything else is just.... up there. The way you express each section of the concierto is what makes this so unique, as well as how accurate your hands are in this concierto. It's hard to learn something like this and you need months to make it clear that you are ready to try it out with an orchestra and then master it. However, don't do the same mistake I did, don't believe you would be able to learn any classical song piece in just a day because I tried to do so once and I had everything but one element to make this song complete which happens to be a major requirement to the music. In vocal, text and notes are the biggest elements and if your missing one of them, you're out. If you forget some notes on a concert which would effect the orchestra, you're out.
@miltonmoore76878 жыл бұрын
I agreed enough with the essence and spirit of your remarks to give you a thumbs-up, but think you exaggerated somewhat regarding the issue of "being out" by hitting wrong notes, which the legendary Arthur Rubinstein was wont to do, and all pianists inevitably fall victim to. The key is to minimize them. Having watched many of Ms. Schwamova's videos, she seems to be adept at avoiding them. I daresay we are all itching to see her play the next two movements of this concerto. I would think this should have already transpired given the level of favorable response she has garnered thus far from her admirers. Respectfully.....

I'd love one day to see her interpretation of Chopin nocturne op 48 no 1. She makes me think of Rubinstein

I'll bet in her mind she was thinking..."boy this is way better than sitting at my piano at home by myself"!! What a lovely young lady! Props to her.
