After hundreds of times hearing these pieces and even playing some of them, it’s incredible how fresh they all sound. Give it to Gilels and he will perform magic!

Echt musikalisches Wunder!
It´s poetry - and Gilels understands it to perfection!🌹

What a delight of music! Such a melodic grandeur within these few bars! Incredible fascinating that these tunes can reach the deepest of your emotions in a matter of seconds. Written from the heart, they strike directly yours, to remind you that you are made of feelings, some of which are yet to be discovered... Bravo Maestro Pietro!

Tchaikovsky is the best IMO in having the listener, rather than himself, as his primary focus. This music is so rich in its romantic ardour.
He plays that last coda quite freely, but that's fine with me. This live recording is enjoyable and interesting - what a rare find!

I am actually surprised about some of the comments about Tchaikovsky's piano music here. There is such a charming naivety and gentle quality about it. It has its place in the classic piano repertoire! Thank you for posting it!!
@timothythorne94645 жыл бұрын
I can't understand why Tchaikovsky's piano music has been treated with such dismissal. The melodies are par excellence, as is all of this composer's music. I find the selections from this opus to be much more interesting and engaging than more highly regarded works of Mendelssohn and Schumann. And the brilliant Theme and Variations at the end is Brahmsian in its development of the chorale-like theme. (I can only imagine Tchaikovsky is rolling over in his grave, being compared to Brahms!)

@@Saltan1908 it's not "better than Brahms", whatever that means. But like Brahms, it reveals a real mastery of composing theme and variations.

@@timothythorne9464 Tchaikovsky disait, avec raison, que la musique de Brahms ne mène nulle part
@timothythorne94643 жыл бұрын
@@Saltan1908 Tchaikovsky was a melodist and songwriter without equal in the Romantic era. But his compositions in the Classical structures, the symphony, concerto, chamber music, etc. show noticable weaknesses in many cases. His "Pathetique" Symphony #6, for all its romantic ardour and rich melody, is not a symphony in the sense Beethoven or Brahms would have described it. It's more an orchestral suite.

how is it that a recording made live in 1950 sounds so excellent? Much better than some studio recordings from the 1970s...interesting...

+Alan MacDonell If you enjoyed this (or any other performance, for that matter) as "spectacular," doesn't that also have something to do with the quality of the music being performed, or at the very least the qualities of the music as brought out by the performance?
