P.I.Tchaikovsky is often criticized for his sentimentalism and pessimism. Tormented, he certainly was. But that did not prevent him from becoming one of the most popular symphonists of the 19th century, on the contrary. The Russian composer enjoys an indisputable gift for melody and, far from being exacerbated, his lyricism is pure and authentic. Composed in the summer of 1888, this fifth symphony reflects the impressions felt by Tchaikovsky who was then living on his country estate in Frolovskoe, near Klin. This enchanting setting, according to the composer, inspired a work whose « simplicity and frankness » Brahms praised. The piece consists of four movements and is based on a main motif, an « idea fixe », to use the composer's words, a process previously used by Beethoven and Brahms. The work attempts to thematize recurring existential subjects among the composer. Tchaikovsky's vision of destiny was entirely undermined by pessimism, but the « per aspera ad astra » model presupposed a triumphant conclusion. This ambivalence is at the origin of Tchaikovsky's dissatisfaction, who considers that the finale Andante maestoso is neither sincere nor authentic. The entire symphony is therefore characterized by a high degree of ambiguity, both emotionally and psychologically. This mineral Fifth, incredible in density and evident in its declamation with its fruity woodwinds and its strings dipped in burning steel in the original colors of the score.
