We simply do not expect Toscanini's "Pathétique" to sound like others. His temperament and literal sense of scores tells us that. The unique nature of his approach stands out and this is another of his most highly regarded, and criticized, recordings.
Toscanini leaves us two studio recordings of this symphony. One with the NBC, which survives in poor condition, and the present one from 1942. One of the virtues of the Red Seal edition is that the recordings are presented in close to their raw state. This makes the possibilities for successful and accurate restoration much better.
The original approach to recording in the Academy of Music here is, in our opinion, the best one for the time. The hall did not lend itself to a big, ambient sound, but it worked very well with an intimate one such as was used here. RCA had a lot of experience with this hall and made many of their most important early recordings there.
Although considerable noise control was employed for this restoration some surface artifacts have been left untouched for the sake of fidelity.

This is the best restoration I´ve heard of the much critized Toscanini recordings in Philadelphia. Excellent work on great performances mostly overlooked on technical objections.

This is "Killer," as we used to say back in the day. Toscanini takes good advantage of the great orchestra that Stokowski and Ormandy built. The third movement is always key for me and Toscanini doesn't disappoint. Plenty of pep and punch, really molto vivace. Beautiful work, Paul. Thanks a bunch.

Although I'm a very amateur classical lover, there's something about Toscanini that stands out to me above other conductors.

What a great restoration this is. Thanks so much, Paul. Using airpods, once my mind's ear tunes out the unfortunate surface noise, I feel like I'm present at a live Toscanini performance, some 80 years later. I'm sure I'll be listening to this often. And what a performance it is. If I could only take one to my desert island, I'd be hard pressed to choose between this or the 1938 Furtwangler. Thanks goodness I don't have to make that decision.🙂
