I've just finished to watch the whole performance. Absolutely stunning, one of the best I've ever seen. The orchestra rendition is astonishing, and Petrenko is an absolute genius. He gives to the conduction another dimension: not only perfect tempo directives, not only dynamics control, but he's also a magician in providing clear gestures regarding the direction of sounds he wants. 7 minutes of applause is the minimum after he and the orchestra gave this masterpiece such gratitude.

Sounds like Karajan's performance. The brass section particularly sounds stronger than their performance for these years. But, at the same time, they keep their flexibility they have got in Abbado's and Rattle's eras. What a great performance. Looking forward to seeing him as a principal conductor, though it's a very very pity that Rattle is going to London.

From this video I was hoping to be able to assess this performance before buying but that's impossible in just under 3 minutes. What I can say is the sound is terrifically exciting but this work needs more than sonic fireworks. I'm not convinced that the emotional depth of some other recordings is reached.

Kirill Petrenko is an outsanding conductor; that is (almost) irrefutable. From him one could point out his energy, his celerity of movements, his memorisitc skills, his trully feelings for music, just to mention a few. Nonetheless, having attented to the same-programmed concert that took place in the Festpielhaus of Baden-Baden during its Osterfestpiele (Easter Festival), I must sorrowfolly say that the performance of that intricately-superhuman Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony was not match up to the Berliner's general superb performance standards -in spite of the fact that the orchestra was the same as usual; but not its conductor. One could defend this with many convincing arguments, but possibly the real true factor was that Maestro Petrenko was (perhaps) too ambitious in that conducting, and only perhaps. In any manner, I do not cast doubt at all on each of them exceptional capabilities and the propser future anyone can predict of this dichotomous union.

for those of you who love this piece, find the Rodzinsky recording which was on lp westminster label, i can't recall the orchestra at the moment you just won't hear the 1st movement the same ever again. it is nothing short of horrifically violent, just as it should be. when the clarinet drifts down into silence, then the pause, the orchestra just turns into lightning, and not the kind that's a safe distance away. i have a copied cd of it, i should try to learn how to upload. i mean, the drama is insane. foam at the mouth, violent, absolutely horrific and powerful. brilliant performance and interpretation. the old mono sound does absolutely nothing to hold it back, at all.

If you look at Richard Strauss, Adrian Boult etc conducting, you will see that it is possible to extract the greatest sounds from an orchestra without feeling obliged to make ridiculous bloated facial expressions trying to ape every emotion in the music. Petrenko, Rattle, Nezet etc take note.
@neil7137
