Had the privilege of hearing this played live on December 20, 2019 as part of The Nutcracker in Lincoln Center, NYC. It was mesmerizing! I was able to score front row seats and was so close to the Maestro that played the solo. Pure magic!

pssst: front row seats are the worst in the house, they usually give them away

I FOUND IT. I’ve been trying to figure out where this was from ever since I was a kid. They actually used this in the 1993 film of The Nutcracker (the Macaulay Culkin one) for one of the scenes, Tchaikovsky quotes himself at 2:16 and used that same melody for the tree growing scene.

It was not only for the film that No. 18 “Entr'acte symphonique” was used. In every performance of Balanchine's The Nutcracker that solo is used. Balanchine omitted a few numbers from the original score of the Nutcracker as well.

@@lepauvrehomme David Koch Theater, Lincoln Center, NYC. It was in my bucket list of things to do, finally did it on 12/20/2019. I planned it ad nauseum and was able to get front row tickets for the wife & I. We want to do it again in the near future.

Wonderful music. Sounds like a violin concert's second movement. If Tchaikovsky had published it separately, it would be better known. However, included in an extensive ballet, it is almost always excluded. After all, it is an entr' acte (no dance), the audience is there to see dance, not a violin concert played by a violinist muffled in the fosse of the orchestra. In turn, the violinist must be angry at having to be a soloist for a technically very difficult piece without receiving extra repayment for it, hidden from the audience, who would be coughing impatiently waiting in front of closed curtains. Anyway, I think Tchaikovsky wasted this wonderful piece of concert by putting it in a ballet and not in a concert hall, so it was predictably destined to be excluded, as history has shown.

Cassiano P Entr’acte is well known to ballet audiences, since George Balanchine included it in his production of Nutcracker. And it’s up to musicians to get inspired by it and perform it. Elevating, sensitively performed!
