This is truly amazing. What a technique and tone from Mr. Abato!!!

I was fortunate enough to play this with him in about 1968 as Vincent was the featured soloist for Iowa Bandmasters Association, he was sponsored by King at the time. Our high school band from Boone, IA accompanied him.

Thank you so much for this, Adam. Like you said: Mr. Abato never multiple-tongued anything! Incredible.

Yes, Southern Music published at least the solo part with piano accompaniment.Southern Music was recently bought up by Hal Leonard and the last time I spoke with a Hal Leonard representative the answer was they couldn't sell it and didn't know when or if it would be available for sale.

It is listed in the ICA Score Collection at the University of Maryland. There is also a clarinet/piano edition that may have been published; the ICA archives have that as well. These are the only copies that I am aware of in the world.

There is a printed arrangement - I have the solo part (piano arr) in my library.

+David Blumberg I have one too! Is yours the Gustave Langenus arrangement? That's what Abato uses here--with LOTS of added double and triple tonguing! Obviously, Caillet made the clarinet choir arrangement. The original publication date was 1944.

Any date when this was released? This is a who's who of New York clarinetists in the 40's and 50's. Sounds like a live, in other words straight through, no stops, recording. Is that a contra-bass clarinet I hear? Mr. Allen-Batieste may have a point, but this is a wonderful hoot--with some superb players in on the joke.

Early 1960s, I believe. Yes, I believe that is a contra-bass you hear.

You should hear him play the Third Movement of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, transposed for B-flat clarinet and clarinet choir. His double tonguing is out of this world. You can find the recording on the internet.
