Bit of an unfair characterization of Peckinpah at the end. He was far more than a maestro of cinema violence. Between “Wild Bunch,” “Straw Dogs,” and “Alfredo Garcia,” he made a western romantic comedy (Ballad of Cable Hogue) and a family drama (Junior Bonner), both of which had little or no violence at all. He joked that whenever he made a violent movie, people complained, and when he made a nonviolent one, they didn’t even bother to show up.

The actor behind El Jefe had a similar role in The Wild Bunch as well.

3:39 I don’t think that is accurate. Peckinpah and Oates worked together on Ride the High Country. That was before The Wild Bunch. Hell, it was the proto-Wild Bunch.

oates appears in the westerner jeff a tv series. he is mumbling at the table. also major dundee in a terrific scene. wonderful actor. i saw peckinpah at the sf showing and having been a fan since the westerner went up and asked him if this was the pic he had wanted to make and he said yes. i loved the pic and told him so and said it reminded me of books by people like david goodis and jim thompson.

He doesn't mention that Young died by committing murder/suicide, but I guess that's a bit of a downer.
