They don't make movies like this anymore. Too bad.

A well deserved Oscar for Carney. Superb movie which was something completely different at the time. Everyone moaning about Pacino not getting the award? I look at him as only playing a reprised character, so hardly something new and deserving.

In the beginning of the movie in New York. he doesn't want to change. Then his friend dies and he is well and truly alone. He sees his his friends corpse and realises, THAT'S IT. When he takes the trip with his beloved cat it's risky. I always thought Ellen Burstyn was hotter than hell even when she was playing a jerk.

We’re waiting to watch ‘Harry and Tonto’; such a beautiful film! Haven’t seen it in so long. C’mon, Ben, crank it up, man. It’s an American Art House film with Art Carney at his best!

Rip Art Carney. Great movie. We were just watching it on tv.

I enjoyed the movie, but agreed with critics who said that it was a nice, pleasant movie that really didn't have much to say.

It's a good movie alright which I haven't seen in many, many years, recalling few details. I remember, though, being a little disappointed with it in terms of the hype surrounding its original release & Oscar buzz from years before. I've always liked Art Carney & he was fine in the role but I seem to remember feeling there wasn't a whole lot to the story. I'd like to see it again, though, after probably 30 years. Freed from the hype, perhaps I'd like it better, accepting it for what it is without disappointment.

I tend to agree with you. I am a huge Art Carney fan, and I thought his performance was brilliant in this picture. I remember it as a slightly depressing movie, though. Not just because of the story, but because of the gray tone of the film that seemed to be very common in the early '70's.

@@tomsampson8084 It's extremely depressing. But he has the moments with his grandson, the prostitute and Dan George when Tonto dies it's rough.

Such a great movie. Great acting, script, but by the 80s, 99% of the movies were bad.
