When this movie came out, I was moonlighting as a movie projectionist to supplement a meager teacher's salary. It played on TV this evening and flooded me with 35 year old memories. Bill Conti's "leaving Chicago composition" still ranks on top of my list of all-time outstanding themes.

Try and troll better. "This old thing" was a great talent. After years being known playing opposite Jackie Gleason in "The Honeymooners" - in a role that unfortunately forever typecast him - Art Carney proved just what a great actor he was in Harry & Tonto. And for once, AMPAS honored the un-showy, part-of-the-fabric-of-the film-yet still unforgettable & brilliant performance when they gave the award to Mr Carney. I 'll always love this film. RIP Mr Carney. And thank you.

He didn't beat the Godfather and Chinatown, he beat out Al Pacino and Jack Nicholson. What's with the best picture angle? I thought this was a best actor award discussion. Obviously Harry and Tonto would come in last compared to the two other films but Carney came in first at the Oscar's for his acting talent.
@garyr60973 жыл бұрын
@@lonerunner89 in your opinion The godfather part 2 and Chinatown are better films than Harry and tonto.. There’s no such thing as better than one another when it comes to art. Same with the Oscars... It’s the judges opinion nothing else. In my opinion ...Harry and Tonto deserved the leading actor Oscar that year .. But it doesn’t make it the best leading actor role or film that year...it’s was just my favourite. Every film nominated was brilliant and every actors performance was brilliant... Why in the arts does everything have to be a competition? It’s ridiculous and very boring

Just found this movie for the first time yesterday. Loved it. Something I notice more and more lately is how directors of the past left so much for the viewers to figure out on their own. Now everything is spoonfed to the viewer. (For example, the scene with Stephanie - We have to decide if he paid his last $100, was it a "gift?" or did they sit in the car and talk about life which is more in line with what we know of Harry based on the hotel conversation with Ginger?)

@funnynerd18 жыл бұрын
The problem with that theory is it contradicts the purpose of the award, which is for the BEST in something. If you weren't the BEST at something, it's nothing personal, but you shouldn't win over someone more deserving. I love Pacino but he only won for Scent of a Woman because the voters were making up for times that he got screwed. The Academy thinks that way almost all the time and that's why so many filmgoers criticize this win in particular. I'm a big fan of Carney's work in The Honeymooners but Harry and Tonto is something that any old actor can do. If not Pacino, Nicholson and Hoffman would've also been better choices.
@Qendrese35497 жыл бұрын
In addition to what Stephen said, Al Pacino did not win Best actor for Godfather part 1. So you really hold movie's success against him here. Plus Carney ALSO beat Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman, who gave incomparably better performances (sure they would both win in a few years but that is pure hindsight). So if you really want to 'spread the Oscars around a bit' and not give it to Pacino, why not give it to one of them? Pacino on the other hand would not win until 1992 for Scent of a Woman, which most people agree was far from his finest work, and which ended up costing Robert Downey Jr. and Denzel Washington. Plus he beat Clint Eastwood, a man who probably has also earned an acting Oscar over his career. Dustin Hoffman wouldn't win until 1979, a performance that he probably would have won for anyway, but, had he won here, might not have needed to win that one as badly. As a result, he beat Peter Sellers, who had also probably earned an acting oscar over his carreer. So because of this, Art Carney has an Oscar and Peter Sellers doesn’t. You say that "plus Art was old & these was probably his last shot at an Oscar"'. I'm sorry, but even if you want to go down that road, the man was simply not all that deserving of an Oscar. He was largely a TV personality. I’m not against the man receiving the nomination, but there is no way the man should have gotten the win, at all.

Fuktard Fagtroll While you laud Godfather, & deservedly so, let's not forget "Chinatown" had the same qualities,top notch acting & that " something extra" called "Hollywood magic" Art Carney's was Oscar worthy, but so was Hoffman, Nicolson, Pacino, & Albert Finney, although like with "On Golden Pond" Keaton & Streep cancelled each other out & Miss Hepburn won, the same probably occurred with Pacino & Nicolson, & the industry to a large extent was re- rewarding many of the older stars..I still think Diane Ladd should've won supporting actress that year over Ingrid Bergman, but what can I say?

@eleniathens1985 Thats why you shouldn't rate anything through the oscar, there are over 6Billion potential viewers in the world and some where around 2Billion of those people fund these movies. Yet only less than 3000 American have a say on which movies where the best? You and me both know that the Hurt Locker did not beat Avatar in 2009 for best picture (IMO). And who goes to say we should even rate the arts and rank them?
@mazurskyfilm14 жыл бұрын
@eleniathens1985 Great comment! The other nominees were Dustin Hoffman in "Lenny," Albert Finney in "Murder On The Orient Express," and Jack Nicholson in "Chinatown." Even Mr. Mazursky acknowledges that it was an incredible feat for Mr. Carney. Personally, I think the Academy thought that all the others would have another shot at Oscar (which proved to be right many times over), and that Mr. Carney might have just this one great time at bat. Which takes nothing away from him. It was his due.

@cboncklis It is your right to dislike Al Pacino but it is absolutely absurd to call his performance over-acted.The character of Michael Corleone is passionate,irascible,dramatic,sometimes tragic.So,the role demands passion,drama,pain.I agree that sometimes more than one performance deserves the award in one year.However this is not the case.The only reason Carney won is because that was his only chance of getting the award.Jack Nicholson also deserved it.
@jacobskinner3522 Жыл бұрын
That’s an oversimplification. Nicholson, Hoffman, and Pacino were all previous nominees without wins, all part of the new Hollywood, all stars of Best Picture nominees. None of them was a clear favorite and they split the vote, which underdog Carney (a beloved veteran in a movie with great reviews and strong box office) benefitted from.
