That homecoming scene featuring Paul Winfield (limping, dropping his crutch) and Cicely Tyson (running barefoot) is one of the most beautiful moments in any film- and I like to believe what nailed the film's Best Picture nomination.

Just re-watched Sounder. Definitely agree. It's a powerful scene. I think the scene between father and son (Winfield and Hooks) is equal. I think it's one of the most beautiful father-son scenes in all of cinema. It always gets to me (Ordinary People with Sutherland and Hutton and Bicycle Thieves are others that come to mind).
