Thanks for the succinct remembrance of this outlier teen film. You can hear Danyi Deats' talk about what it was like playing the body in River's Edge in Kristy Guevera-Flanagan's short doc about young women as dead bodies in media, "What Happened to Her." It's a heavy experience.

Such a good movie. I'm the same age as the teenagers here, but I lived a very sheltered life, so it was eye-opening to see a different perspective.

I grew up in Milpitas where the real events happened . And the Over the Edge kids were across the bay in Foster City . The Bay Area was a messed up place to be a teen back then

Rivers Edge was pretty similar to my experiences as a teen ager in central Oregon in the 2000s. Especially with the references to Portland. But yeah it might have been on CD not tape but the Slayer songs from the soundtrack were what we used to play after school

Two movies came out in 1986 a few months apart that involved kids and a dead body. River's Edge was released in May and Stand By Me was released in August. Recently, while watching Twin Peaks for the first time, I was haunted again by the death of a young woman that turned up wrapped in plastic. Last night, I rewatched River's Edge for the first time in many years and was really taken in by a couple of things that sucker punched me pretty hard. First, was the lack of emotion. In fact, for most of the film, the only emotional sadness we see come from the little girl who lost her doll. Her tears and sadness are genuine. We do get a glimpse of the high school teacher who shows emotion about the kids not understanding and appreciating what happened in the 1960s with the Civil Rights movement, etc. While we do see emotional scenes of anger and frustration, we do not see it again until Lane finds John's body. His lamentation is chilling. I would also like to address how disturbed I was by the naked, exposed body of a young woman whose future was stolen from her. The first thirty minutes, the camera just keeps going back to her repeatedly as the other kids stare and gawk, as do the watchers of the movie. The only sense of closure I received as a viewer of the film was seeing her dressed in white at her funeral. The people in attendance did not really display any emotional sadness. It was like this girl did not have any friends and that made me very sad. While I understand correlation and causation are two very different things, I only see the recreational use of drugs and alcohol as a mechanism for coping at the expense of feeling. This very well me true for every generation. Thank you for posting this video. I needed to decompress after viewing Rivers Edge. I think I will go watch Stand By Me to see how the emotional elements of the film play out.

I'm a year late on commenting... but shout out to Roxanna Zal (Ione Skye's friend) who never got the career she deserved... also the soundtrack to this film was on point... with a mix of punk and metal..

The glib tenor of this film review, a film about alienation, nihilism, broken homes, and economic downward mobility, was so out of place, so flagrantly inappropriate, that I found it to be even more shockingly macabre than the movie itself. Someone should make a film about unserious and excruciatingly glib movie reviewers... always having the totally inappropriate emotional responses to the material at hand. That would make for a seriously twisted film. I can't think of Rivers Edge from 1986 without thinking of Over the Edge from 1979. The kids are definitely not alright as both films were trying to warn the nation. Obviously, no one listened, and life in America has just gotten progressively worse and worse in the 37 years since Rivers Edge was released, not just for kids, but for everyone. Rivers Edge was WAY ahead of it's time. A deeply disturbing foreshadowing of the direction the country was heading. Now, in 2022, we've arrived, and in much of the country, Rivers Edge looks like a Tuesday. My comment might not have been "nice," but, I feel like I said what I had to say. Thank you for the opportunity.
