Him: "Why didn't her success open the door for more female directors?" Answer: Your premise is wrong. There were lots of female directors before sync sound and most of the highest paid writers were female such as Elinor Glyn who wrote "It" and Anita Loos. Mary Pickford was a studio boss before any of the Warners, Meyer, Cohn or the Zanucks, and continued in the business until 1949. Odd that he seems not to know these things.

Is there any way to get this TCM version of this film? Most internet versions are low quality.

Film is still under copyright. Believe it or not, some of the rights holders are pretty firm on these (I wanted to post a clip from one of her talkies and it was flagged / blocked very quickly).

official, no. Bootleg dvd, yes. For whatever reason, the copyright holders seem to have no desire in releasing Bow films on DVD (or blu-ray). A real shame.
